Psssst, Aileen. I got one word for ya (amphetamine). Ya can't shut up and someone will have to drag ya away from the podium. Works.

Hey, congrats!

What would I do?  I would probably overthink it, practice my speech way too much, and stand up there knees shaking and stomach rolling hoping I don't forget the umpteen repetitions of the little bit of what I had to say.

I am a pretty good public speaker, though, if I do say so myself (and I do,) but it was a learned skill that came to me from the necessity of using it in my job.

Here's what I do.  First, look fantastic.  Clothes, hair, manicure.  For me, clothes matter, and I make sure I have exactly the right clothes for the occasion.   If you're clumsy like me, I wouln't recommend heals.  I would go for strappy sandals, low heel, or maybe some knee high boots and a skirt just above the knee?   I carry note cards, but mostly to give my hands something to do.  I avoid powerpoints, etc.  Too much stuff to keep track of.  I immediately meet as many eyes as I can.  That's what we're really afraid of, right...all of those people.  When I look them in the eye expecting rejection and seeing pleasantly curious and slightly bored expectation on their faces, a lot of the fear dissapates.  I try not to joke.  I'm a terribe joke teller, but I am good at laughing at myself, so I make it a point to do that at some point.  It usually gets a laugh, but only because it's true.

You have a great sense of humor and a sharp wit.  Try to make that work for you.  Most importantly, try to have fun.  All those people are captivated by you for one brief moment.  Try to enjoy the attention.

Anyway, that's all I got.  IMHO, you'll do great.

Lovely ideas everyone.  Thank you.  I gather that I need to get drunk, shoot up, get laid, meet and greet and wear stilettos to get through this.

Now you see why I'm doing this sex change thing - the stilettos are vital, but just dont work with a suit and tie.........

Lots of great points already made so I wont repeat them I hope!

If you have a chance have a look at the room you will be in before hand so you have a rough idea of the set up and size.  Go in early and make sure you have all the equipment you need and know how everything works.  If using a whiteboard make sure you have whiteboard markers. If a powerpoint presentation make sure it all works, no typos etc.   Have a glass of water with you and don't be afraid to take a pause to have a sip.  It can give you a few much needed seconds to clear your mind and work out what you will say next. Expect to feel nervous on the day - it is natural.  Speak slowly and remember to BREATHE.  When nervous we have a tendancy to speak fast and mumble and also to breathe very shallowly. Lift your head up and make eye contact with one person in the room - imagine you are speaking directly to them for most of the presentation.

And most of all....enjoy yourself.

Here's what I do and it works everytime: throw up.

Firstly, I don't have to stick my finger down my throat because the nausea is right up there naturally.
Secondly, because of the hurling no one will want to have me near and I will get out of said speech.
Thirdly, if excuted well and more than once, I'll not be asked ever again to speechify in front of folks.
Usually it only takes two pukefests before any hope of getting me to public speak again is abandoned forever.

Like that.

Act.  like you are goin' for the Oscar.  practice, in front of a mirror, exuding a "look" of confidence, by visualizing things or situations that you feel confident in.

that and smoke a big fattie right before you go.

That would only work if they had a big table full of donuts after.

It's very good advice to single someone out who looks attentive and sympathetic and project to them. Two other tips I'd offer are firstly:  to keep sentences short and simple - an out loud read-through should help you sharpen up: spoken and written English are different.

Secondly, to combat your nerves immediately before you go on there's a handy yoga trick which sounds weird but really works. With your finger close your left nostril and breathe in, switch finger to close the right and breathe out. Breathe in through the right nostril, close the left and breathe in. Repeat this until you feel yourself relax and your heart-rate slow.  Remind yourself you're perfectly capable of doing this, walk out there... and do it.

1- Practice you speech.  Know what you are going to say.
2- Don't assume to know it by heart, bring a written copy in large print to the podium.
3- Pick out a friendly face in the audience and speak directly to them.
GOOD LUCK!!!

If you can, have a wander around the venue before the audience turn up. Stand where you're going to stand and look out at the auditorium. Pick a point on the back all above their heads. When you come to the real thing deliver your speech to that point. Also, if you wear glasses or contacts and don't have to read anything leave them in the dressing room. A blurry room is less intimidating than a room in sharp focus. Avoid all chemical aids though, they generally cause more problems than they solve.
