These people wished more so to appease the pagans and encourage them to join the "christian" church by adding these holidays. It was really a political move by Constatntine to retain peace in the Roman Empire, than any actual Christian conversion. Sort of a 'one size fits all' religion. The actual followers of Jesus at that point, were still following the Jewish traditions and reeling from persecution and then the later combining of their beliefs with pagan beliefs.
For me, Jesus and my relationship with Him,is one thing....religion and how people choose to follow Him, is another.

going to have to disagree with you on the "one size fits all" comment .... for the reason that the catholic church will shun anyone that even expresses thoughts in a same-sex relationship, poly relationships, or even a "pairing" from 2 different religions (with that, they require the non-christian to agree that any offspring produced from the pairing will be raised as christian - my mom, catholic; my father, athiest : married in a catholic church)

To take that a step further, I was raised Catholic and had my arm twisted into getting married in the Roman Catholic church, despite being blatantly pagan (five pointed stars tattooed on my arm hanging out at the wedding) for several years and marrying an atheist.   (I could have said no and my mother wouldn't have come to my wedding.  I made the choice.  I take responsibility for it.)

They were very nearly unwilling to marry us because my husband isn't baptised and because of the little test they make you take.  We matched up nearly perfectly in all areas except religion.  For that, we both said we wouldn't necessarily raise a child of ours Catholic if they didn't want to be raised Catholic.  (I don't like lying.  I had to do plenty of it, but I didn't like it and I felt like a walking pile of crap afterward.)  We got through that hurdle, but they gave us a LOT of grief about my honey not being baptised.  At first the bishop, who I'd known since I was a baby, refused to sign the certificate of release for a Catholic to marry a non-Catholic.  Apparently they're a little more easygoing provided you still worship Jesus in some form.  Not so okay with anyone else.

We pulled through it and I am happily not lying to anyone about my religion anymore.  I take proud responsibility for the path I chose.  I'm happy, and that's what matters.  I would never presume to judge anyone for choosing a path that makes them happy as well, regardless of what it is.  I do, however, demand the same respect.  My mother and I have had a long talk or ten since then, and she understands it's not going away.

On another note, I have a hilarious anecdote for you.  My Granddad (a fabulous, wonderful, hilarious man who sometimes is a little too honest) and I were sitting around at my great-grandmother's (on the other side of the family) viewing a few months ago, and he leans over to me and loudly goes, "So when are you going to church again?"  I looked him straight in the face and said, "I'm not Granddad.  I have a religion and it's not Catholicism."  He retorts, "I know what religion you think you have."  I, of course, say, "There's no think about it, Granddad."  And during a completely silent moment in the funeral home he quips, "What do you do?  Ride around naked on broomsticks all night?"  My mom and sister start giggling uncontrollably, and all I can do is smile wickedly and say in my sweetest voice, "Only when you're not looking, Granddad."

You probably had to be there, but it was hilarious.

kittinSol -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 4:11:46 PM)

Some would say that the Catholic church has little to do with Jesus [:D] .

Alumbrado -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 4:29:35 PM)

I certainly can't find any mention of  it in the Bible.

The bible is a code of astrological signs
2000 years ago was the astrological age of Pisces (The star sign of the 2 fish). The two fish represent a time of plenty, this is why Jesus was able to feed thousands of people with only 2 fish.  Jesus = SunLamb = Aries 2 Fish = PiscesPassover = Spring EquinoxTwelve Disciples = (12 Signs of the Zodiac)The Water Carrier =  Aquarius  Now read the following passage from the bible. Luke 22 The Last Supper  7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters. A "man carrying a jar of water" is clearly Aquarius the water carrier. The Jesus myth is clearly a cyptic story, written by sun worshipers. On most paintings of Jesus you can see the sun dirrectly behind his head. Yet still most people think he was a real person.

Well , now that you say so, it all makes since.  You really blew the lid off that scam!  Oh learned whistleblower, truly, i thank thee.  Thanks to you, none of us believe any more, no proof needed...thanks.

kittinSol -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 8:06:40 PM)

It's quite interesting, but once you've found the signs in the story, how do you interpret them in context (and where's the bloody Virgo? In the form of Mary, I bet [8|]).

In which the sun was said to have been born during the winter solstice (23-25 December). The sun would then travel around the cross of the zodiac only to die and be reborn every year

Actually, I think you have it backwards.  Christians didn't celebrate the BIRTH until well after Rome went Christian.   At that time, the church was spreading into the northern areas where the winter solstice was a big deal.  In order to tempt more followers, "Christmas" was created ("Listen, Ivan, you don't have to give up the candles, fir trees, mistletoe and all that.  We have our own celebration you can have fun with.")

Rome probably would not have ordered a census during the winter months as those are the growing times in the middle east.  A more likely time would have been the summer when things were more quiet because it's too damned hot and dry for things to grow.  If the damned people had to sweat a bit to get home and get counted, no skin off the Emperor's nose, but let the grain shipments falter and thing could get bad

Zensee -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 8:19:55 PM)

"...no proof needed..."

Why is proof needed for not believing when it isn't required for believing? That seems unfair.

Nice, but I prefer this hymn. Hey, in typing this, it just occured to me that hymn and hymen are just a vowel away. Is that a code from god too ?

lronitulstahp -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 8:28:21 PM)

i agree...i don't require an explanation from anyone for their beliefs, or lack therof.  What i was ridiculing was OP's particular version of "proof" , the list of apparent "facts", which is supposed to shake my beliefs at their core.  i found them comical...

MissSCD -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 8:41:26 PM)

And what is your point in  writing this?  What are you trying to achieve?   Are you trying to anger Christians?
You should be the one worrying, and leave us alone.

The Jesus myth is said to have happened around 2000 years ago. However like most myths people have conveniently forgotten that the story is far older than 2000 years old. The story of Jesus is a rip off of the earlier pagan sun worshiping myths. In which the sun was said to have been born during the winter solstice (23-25 December). The sun would then travel around the cross of the zodiac only to die and be reborn every year. The Sun Cross is at least 4000 years old. The Celtic Cross is also far older than the Jesus Story. Followers of the early sun cults would worship the SUN each week on a Sunday. You may find it interesting to google the word Jesus and look on the google images tab.Notice how nearly ever image of Jesus has the Sun in the picture. 70% of Americans believe in Jesus.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/3/2008 9:00:16 PM)

I think the Zeitgeist movie is well worth watching. Certainly gives a different POV.

kittinSol -> RE: The Jesus Myth (5/4/2008 5:24:30 AM)

I don't see where the 'Jesus bashing' occurred, Mia. I think you're  easily offended. Some Christians are so damned touchy when it comes to their religion... It's not you that's being questioned: it's what many of us consider to be a myth. Freedom of thought, remember? Considering the number of Muslim bashing and Jew bashing, which tend to bash the people rather than the religion), I think the present thread is particularly respectful. So, I shall show some non-Christian charity and thank you for insulting so many of us.

As a non-Christian, I have to hear about the exaltation of Jesus nearly ever single day, and trust me, I've had to hold my tongue on many occasions when people tried to push their religious agenda down my throat, totally disregarding my own beliefs. Not all Xstians do this, but the ones that do are particularly virulent. Let's remember that proselytism is an important part of the Xstian credo and that many are more than happy to carry out this particular agenda. So... tolerance from all sides of the religious divide is a good thing: and that includes you hearing the other side of the 'story', if you're ready to.

The are only a couple problems with your rendition, pj.

The first is that it is incredibly easy to make attributions post hoc.

The second is the astrology thing. What do you believe? Tropical or sidereal? Both have a few plausibility problems. We can start a whole new discussion about it or continue on in this thread. But then, I'm a relative non-believer about most faith-based entities.
