You'll find cliques and bullying of some description in pretty much any group you care to watch/study. It's instinctive and wrapped up in status - some learn to control their instincts, though.

To be fair, I don't think this board is particularly bad for cliques; in fact, I'd say quite the opposite. Asked, "who are the players?" I'd be struggling to give you an answer. I can think of a few posters whom seem to enjoy a great deal of respect, but I haven't seen much evidence of this resulting in others "not being tolerated". I can think of only one thread that amounted to an exercise in idolatry, with the idols lapping up their celebrity status - it was cringeworthy and noticeable because that's the only thread I've seen in that vein.

Posters will be tested, of course; it's instinctive. Granted, there's a fine line between being tested and being bullied

If it helps to shed some light on the matter, I'm more than happy ploughing my own arrogant furrow.

Redoubt -> RE: its fuckin sad i tell ya (5/3/2008 10:19:45 PM)

Well the first thing I'd say is that life is too freakin short to let an internet forum get you down.

Anytime you give anonymity (to a degree here, anyway) to folks, the social, polite nature that comes from self survival instinct goes bye-bye. Can you imagine some of the discussions here taking place in the same way at a munch?!? (actually, I'd actually quite dig that, apart from the frequent 911 calls)

For the most part, it's an excercise in E-Alpha behavior. Men show, women choose. Once you realize it's all mostly posturing, you'll worry less about it.

On the positive front, there are some seriously good alpha candidates on this board, sure, it can be a regular fest sometimes, but I find by being relatively respectful... thinking (a little) before posting... and not resorting to ad-homs generally gets you by. If someone disagrees... either consider their position, dismiss it, or block 'em... your choice.

I think the snarkier posters actually do us all a service by requiring the e-peen wagglers to either think before they post, or have a position they care enough about to actually back up with a reasonable rebuttal... otherwise this whole thing would be one big penis show. (Rather than a variety show with frequent penis appearances)

Oh and, GT? shush... you're too funny and cute to be called snarky.

Hey! I want to be in a clique!
How do I join?

Yeah, I couldn't stand Cjan when he first got in here, now we're "buddies!"

::chuckling::
NO one here has admitted to being in any of the "cliques", but it is fairly obvious

who is in them.
[:D]

It is?

Sure it is!
Follow the yellow brick road, I will draw you a map.

Then you will be in the "cool kids collarme club".
[:D]

Oh nice! So I'm not "cool" now?
Is that what you're saying?

cjan -> RE: its fuckin sad i tell ya (5/3/2008 10:35:13 PM)

Ya couldn't stand me at first, popeye ? Lmfao. Same here. Now were "buds" , of a sort. ( Long as I pitch, k?).

Just goes to show, imo, that folks who have widely different views can be decent, respectful and even " buds" , if they each have respect for themselves, and others, and their views and their opinions are well thought out.

Popeye you are now officially a member of the "cool kids club on collarme", you
will soon be getting your golden ticket!
You will be rich, biotch![:D]

It can be with the written word. That is why some people put j/k after their screed. Also /irony and /sarcasm. Disambiguation.

But it's not funny when you put the j/k or any other buzz-killing explanations at the end of a joke.  It completely ruins it.  Hell I put one of those stupid smilies, and I hate those damn things.  I thought that'd be enough.  But like I said, humor escapes some people.

Bethnai -> RE: its fuckin sad i tell ya (5/4/2008 12:33:39 AM)

I came back to the boards because I may not agree with what was being said, but I was willing to listen to hear it out. It was intelligently spoken.  I am not talking about newbie information, but rather places that I was going. Its not here anymore.  The people that would voice their opinions, don't now. There was a time that I could say, "I don't get it, could you repeat that-speak slowly please." And I would get an answer. Not now.  Not because they became shitty, they just no longer post.

Now, I wait. Some threads that have the capacity to go somewhere are taken up by the clique and after 5 pages of patting themselves on the back.............there isn't anything left to discuss.  It could have been a good thing. Familiarity has bred contempt.

Screw fall in line. I, personally, don't care if I'm blocked, hated or not in the in-crowd. Some of you act like many of us haven't been not liked by much better.  Oh, but I have.  By the same token, some of you need to check yourself because you look like shit.

Thanks Popeye.  Hey, what clique are we in?  When I was in high school, I was in the "guys who smoked pot under the bleachers, didn't join in any school functions, thought school dances, pep rallies, and the prom was lame, but made good grades" cliche.  I am trying to translate that to adulthood, and I am coming up with nothing.

I'd say the ROTC clique from "Animal House" is a better fit.[8D]

Hey hippie, I actually took ROTC in my first two years of college.  We weren't a fraternity really.  I don't know if you noticed but there was a big difference between 1962 (when I think Animal House was based) and 1993.  I took it for two years, and I was actually made cadet seargent major.  I just chickened out when they asked for the commitment on the 3rd year.  I wanted to keep partying.  So I changed majors.  I had fun though.  We got laid a lot by the young, blonde bimbo types you lust after so much now.  It does help when you're in shape.  I ran 2 miles a day (and smoked grass and drank tons)  I guess you were a lightweight.

Unlike a lot of the idealists, I understood what college was for.  It was to learn, have fun,  and discover who you are.  I had no delusions of grandeur.  But you keep thinking what you want.  To paraphrase a song, "You're an old hippie, and you don't know what to do."  I guess that's hard to accept at your age when your single.

i think posting here is about the hardest thing to do...sometimes you may feel as if you have good ideas but are just afraid to say them...snarky is too nice...there are some here that are just down right mean.....but, who are they really?  NO ONE...so i have been trying to post a bit more....sheesh now that i went in a really odd circle i will wait to get wounded......

Post sweetie. What is the worst any clique can do on here? Unless you choose to view them in a different way then they are a bunch of pixels on a screen and what is to be scared of about that? How can a bunch of pixels really effect you unless you let it.

Post more, you have something to say and contribute that is worth hearing [:)]

Oh, you poor child. Even your insults are lame.

But you are right in one way, stepchild. "I don't know what to do." I can never decide if I want to lay in bed or get up, or what I want to eat in the morning or midday or evening or whenever else I want to eat, or which car I want to drive, or if I want to work on a project or play the drums all day or just watch Babylon 5. Or if I want to cash in some Delta points and pack a bag and grab my passport and catch a plane to Berlin or Madrid or London or wherever. Or which chick I want to ring up.

It really IS a tough life. I might have to snooze in a bit so I can wake up and figure out if I want to do anything.

So did you decide if you are going to shack up with that chick who used to beat you up and who had four kids on you?

I am not here enough to be part of a clique and my own experience has been that when I make posts, even though I am relatively unknown people treat me nicely.  Yes I confess to being one of the people that the person in the clique thread was referring to (I think) however that is because sometimes my tolerance for dumbness (IMO) is probably switched to very low.  I can work on that.

My own experience on here has been that people have been quite inclusive when I have posted and I do try wherever possible to keep my silliness restricted to the random stupidity side ...but what can I say...sometimes the words are typed and sent before my brain is engaged!

Raechard -> RE: its fuckin sad i tell ya (5/4/2008 5:05:10 AM)

Some of this is probably more paranoia than anything else. Nobody really knows who talks with who on the other side so if a person doesn’t agree with your viewpoint and takes someone else’s side in a debate it can seem their opinions were predetermined by their friendships.

This isn’t always the case though because there are times when fighting the tide is hard and people are only repeating the ignorant views of others because they feel their friends need someone to hold their hand in an argument. I’ve never really thought like fulfilling that role myself because the people I tend to like are the ones that can hold their own in an argument without others parroting their views.
