innocentangel-
I can't give you any description other than those I have read. I would recommend "Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns." They have a whole chapter dedicated to it. I also think that it's very good introductory reading all the way around.

"Subspace" is generally used to describe the endorphin high that bottoms can attain during play (usually physical play, but sometimes other things as well). Personally, I refer to it as "whitespace", since for me it doesn't have to have anything to do with submission but is simply a biochemical reaction where everything gets all white and fluffy for me.

There was a thread on this some time ago, but I wasn't able to turn it up in the search feature. Proud? You're the expert on back threads, right?

Well i cant tell YOU how to get to subspace .. that is something you and your Dom/Master will have to find out. Everyone has their own buttons.

What quickly/easily gets me there is rhythm. A flogging with a good solid rhythm that I can flow with and drift away on. For me its basically like losing time. Sort of like being asleep but not. I can usually vaguely hear and apparently I still make the appropriate sounds (moans, groans, gasps etc). I cant speak if my life depends on it. I am however good at drooling .. lol I can still feel overt pain, and that can snap me out. Otherwise, I just come to on my own, which is normally followed by knees buckling and then uncontrollable crying and laughing for an undetermined amount of time. Then after all that, usually knackered (bone tired). Is a very draining experience, for both people.

It is most likely a different experience for every person. Dont try and force yourself there there .. I doubt that works. Just let it happen ..

Good luck

This is usually occurs when the slave is introduced to her painlevel and beyond in a safe but intense manner . My first slave was an Army Sgt. named Dee , who right from the first time We met wanted to be whipped and spanked hard and fast.

A good book to read especially for Masters is The Q Letters By Sir John it is hard to find exept at Barnes & Noble but it has all the other books beat by a Mile

Hitting space doesn't just come from pain, or from going beyond your pain levels. For some people, yes it does definitely. For others, they space from the mental aspects of D/s, or from bondage, or from a mixture of the above. I know people who can start to space after a spanking starts, to others who start to space as soon as she puts a certain leather hood on.

Reaching space is about endorphins and reactions. No one can really tell you what space will be like, or how to get there. One friend of mine compares it to orgasms - different for everyone, but you know when you've got it.

Anyone I have ever played with has experienced space. I, in turn, usually experience some form of Top space when I play.

The things that have worked for me in helping a bottom reach space are:

-ensuring they know that they are safe
-develop a good, natural rhythm in your strokes.. (When using a flogger, crop, cane, etc)
-Keep them focused on their breathing. Long...slow...deep...breaths
-Keep your voice consistent...soothing...firm...
-Stay focused on what you are doing to the bottom
-try and maintain the same kind of toy. If you're doing "Thud" stick to "Thud". Don't go changing from a buffalo hide flogger (Thud) to a stockwhip (STING!)...be consistent

I know this sounds out of character for me, as I am a ruthless sadist...and this seems so lovey-dovey. But I enjoy making a slave "fly", so it's important to me to be able to do it. This is what works for me. Pain alone doesn't usually do it (especially for a first time flier.)

Hope this is useful...

Another example of sub space is when distance runners hit it. I am not a runner but not sure the term but it allows them to push beyond the pain they endure when they run. The best example of it is in the Movie called a man called Horse. This is an old movie with Peter Otool in it. He had his for slits cut through his pectoral muscles and two wooden pegs were slit through it. The four Leather strips were attached and he hangs from it. The pain was so high he was allowed to see his spirit guide. The young Indian Brave endures the same thing in order for them to prove them selves a worthy. I also have been told by some slaves and subs when they are tied they can go into subspace with out having pain inflicted on them.

My first play partner would go into deep subspace. She had no limit and that is dangers for the person she is with could mark her for life. She almost tore down a heavily build cross and tore out a screwed in eye bolts out a floor Joyce. She even pull her hand out a tightly leather cuffs and not bother her. Depending how deep she was in subspace she would endure depression for a while and need to keep in constant contact with who ever she played with. Also it would take about 20 hours for her to be able to open her eyes up. Three days for her to even start to remember what we did to her. That it is important for the Dominate to stay in contact with the sub/slave.

~grins..as someone who loves subspace. i call it my room with no windows and no doors.... i agree with most..but personally..i find a much deeper space.. when the thud changes and pulls me up and out of space by adding a STINGGGGGGGGGG, and then plummets me back down again.. each time the sensation changes.... i get to go deeper...

i guess bottom line is.. the space is different for everyone.. if you are not finding it.. you will know.. and when you do find it.. you will know...

mely the sensation slut

Subspace isn't the same as an endorphin rush for me. Subspace can be triggered by something as simple as a look or a word or a touch (like a fist slowly tightening on the hair at the back of my neck). It takes a lot of work to get me to the point where my endorphins kick in, which can be good or bad depending how you look at things

Subspace is an altered state of consiousness and different for each person experiencing it.

For me it is like the place I go to when I meditate

I can space out at a party just sitting, listening to the music, the sounds of the dungeon and feeling the energy of the players.

Domspace for me is different, I become very focused on the sub and the scene, I am flowing with the energy of the sub. I am involved with alternative forms of healing like Theraputic Touch, during a scene subs will often let down the psychic shields they use to preserve their personal space. During the last public scene I did, I was led to do energy work on the sub. After passing my hand in front of his face and chest, I felt a large ball or lump in the center of his chest, without thinking, I used energy to remove it. In our debriefing later I mentioned it and he said he has been waking up with a pain in the center of his chest, exactly where I felt the fist sized lump. It has been 4 days and no chest pain. So, for me, Dom space can lead to Shamanic space. But as I say, it is different for everyone.

How does subspace feel to me? Bliss. That's not the same as joy. It's certainly not elation. It's a feeling of profound contentment.

How do I get to subspace?

Runner's high. Doesn't happen often. I don't run much anymore. Long stretches of kickboxing gets me there.

Spontaneously. Happens rarely, and only when I'm alone in nature. Because it's not paired with other sensations (pain, exhaustion, orgasm), I feel like it's the purest form of subspace. I suspect some people who've experienced this form of Bliss beleive they've been communicating with God.

bdsm. I can get there with a combination of pain and tantric sex. I call it "The River".

Which reminds me. Somebody mentioned rhythmic pain is good for getting to subspace. So can anyone tell me why you don't get to subspace when you give birth? Is there a doctor on the board?

i also didnt know of subspace when having my children, but when i think back, i believe its quite possible i slipped into it. especially with my first, which was an excruciating 16 hour ordeal with contractions coming a minute and a half apart for the last 8 hours with no meds. there's my 2 pennies *plink plink*

*reminds muse that it is not really subspace, it is the effects of the concussions from her head smacking against unpadded speakers*

But I digress.

Hello,

It is entirely possible that subspace is a function of childbirth, and that without the overload of endorphins the experience would be far more painful than it is.

I say this because when my children were being born, the doctors for the first one were in a big fat hurry to knock my ex-wife out, give her pain killers, etc. I was under the distinct impression that her comfort and experience were near the bottom of the list of things her doctors gave a rat's keister about. In other words, the sooner she could be unconscious and the kid was in my arms, the sooner they could go back to talking about their golf game.

Pain management is a fairly new study in medicine, and I am not sure a predominantly male profession would have historically spent much time looking in to the hormonal stressors on a woman giving childbirth. Additionally, the psychology of a woman giving birth was probably less interesting to people studying childbirth than the psychology of the woman after she had given birth.

Just me, could be wrong, but that is my $0.02

Sinergy

I was so glad to see this thread - when I first started, I didn't know what was happening to me. I'd get what I'd call "high". Now I call it "going under" and it is triggered usually by His voice, speaking over and over, in a rythm, or by repeated messages via IM (we live miles and miles apart). I look forward to going further and further under ...

*laughs* i've given a lot more damage in the pit than i've taken...just You remember that.

Anyway, i concur on the Dr's rush to drug you. i was determined with my first to do it "natural" and almost succeeded had i not needed to rest before the actual delivery. Of all my labors it was the most wonderful experience. The pain, while intense, was exhilirating.

Can you really reach subspace through an IM conversation?
