Asherdelampyr -> Interesting quote from a good book (5/5/2008 4:02:37 AM)

If your consceince does not stop you from doing something ahead of time, it has no right to nag at you afterwards

Whaddyall think?

I disagree with the quote.

If it were true, we would miss out on learning from our mistakes, oftentimes.

Hey Asher.

I don't agree, although the premise is nice. We need comparitive experiences to keep us from, perhaps, making the same mistakes in the future.

Of course Level said the same thing more concisely but I don't like to copy verbatim. I like to run with it and pretend it's my own. : D

More so, even to accept that as true, we'd have to believe the following never happen:

1 - Additional information provides a better picture of circumstances to us

2 - We are in the exact same mental state regarding willpower and temptation at all times.

3 - Our conscience is always present with the exact same amount of force.

I think, once you consider the vicissitudes of human behavior and mental state, it's pretty clear this will not work out on a practical basis, regardless of if you agree with the statement or not.

Reality conspires against it.

As I age, I notice abit of short termed memory loss.

At 1st I was alarmed.

But it does have a plus.  That being that if something upsets me, that I might forget it and move on more easily.  :-)

I never did say I agreed with it :P just that it was interesting

I think the quote overlooks the fact that many people have knee-jerk responses, based on raw emotion. When the emotions simmer down, the conscious emerges and often nags.

Hanibul the canibul would probably agree with that premise

What "good book" are you quoting?

RCdc -> RE: Interesting quote from a good book (5/5/2008 12:34:21 PM)

This is Darcy

I agree with subfever and would also add that sometimes we do things knowing that we are doing wrong, and then repent at our lesiure, the old it's better to regret what you've done rather than what you haven't done maxim.

The latest neurological research shows that in many scenarios our subconscious makes decisions for us before we are conscious of the descision we have made so we really only have the perception of free will. We are sort of looking at a film of our own lives being played out, which makes the nagging of the conscience even more of a conundrum.

No doubt later research wil contradict this or maybe it won't but it gets one thinking.

I should think that having done something really nasty and then  being totally unmoved by it is a definition of a psychotic mindset.

Double the sentence I say and lock up any who try to excuse such things.
I dont like the sentiment at all.
Tho' being guilt ridden after the event achieves sweet FA. IMO.
