Yeah, this pic goes of it's way to earn that PG-13 rating. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable brining any of the tots I watch over to see it, simply because...yeah, Iron Man kills people.

I really hope that's something that gets touched on in the next few movies. Favreau's said he wants to do at least three Iron Man pictures, and has a character progression already laid out...

I'm thinking that Tony Stark goes on a world-wide terrorist blowey-uppy extraveganza, gets a lot of press being all cool as Iron Man, and really plays up this new dashing hero thing he's got going. But inside, he's starting to go hollow. He's gotta be Tony Stark, party-guy billionaire and Iron Man, being called in to fight "the bad guys" with high-powered explosives a few times a week, and the pressure's starting to get to him. Couple that with a creeping realization that he might not be doing as much good as he thinks (violence does beget more violence, and as we've seen painfully made clear in the last five years sweeping in to someplace, killing a bunch of guys and telling everyone to play nice doesn't work too well most of the time,) and soon those dirty martinis and fingers of Scotch we saw in this flick start piling on.

This opens up for James Rhodes to come in as the hinted-at War Machine to pick up for Iron Man's drunken slack. Much fun is had by nerds everywhere.

Yeah, if you know any of the Iron Man background, he's an alcoholic, highly-flawed character (as his speech at the end was supposed to indicate) so he struggles with that while still being Iron Man. In the comics, it was a severe alcohol relapse that led to him losing his company and voluntarily giving up control of the armor to Rhodes. However, it was Obadiah Stane in the comics that pushed him toward relapse, so it will be interesting to see how Favreau makes changes to suit his created universe. Though I will say, from what I have seen, as far as remaining "true to the comics," Iron Man has it head and shoulders above the other Marvel movies that have come out so far. All they did was change the timeline a little bit. Everything else is pretty spot-on. Pretty rare these days.

I'm going this weekend to see the movie; I've loved comics since I was veddddy young (my first one was Avengers #88).

If they're going to do the booze thing with Stark, that means they'll hit upon one of the best Iron Man stories, Demon In A Bottle. Should be good.

Further comics news: I saw some stills from the Watchmen movie, including Rorschach. I hope they do this one right, it deserves it.

DomKen -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 4:19:04 PM)

Speaking of other superhero films, Iron Man had a teaser for The Spirit. I'm very hopeful.

[:-][:-][:-][:-]  ACCCCCKKK, Level, they're making a Watchmen movie??? I have sooooo got tell Lumus, if He doesn't know already! We love those comics.

As for  Demon In A Bottle, that's part of Tony's appeal. He's human. He has his struggles despite all his money, power and women. That's where the best of the superheros come in, Batman, Iron Man, Spider-Man. They have their struggles, they're just regular men (or women) that have an ability to do something that you or I can't but they just try to do their best. Personally, I don't think they could have gotten a better actor than Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony.

I hope Mr Eisner is up there smiling, then. A great storyteller, and such brilliant layouts.

They are indeed! And evidently, it's past the "discussion" mode, as they're actually filming scenes. If I remember right, they're aiming for a 2009 release date. Alan Freaking Moore is the man. [8D]

I'd also like to see a film version of Garth Ennis' Preacher, Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, Gaiman's Sandman, and the Avengers Korvac Saga. [:)]

Lumus -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 4:49:53 PM)

There's a few characters I'd enjoy seeing gain some focus...unlikely, several of them are now dead:

Marvel - Ka-Zar and Shanna the She-Devil; Magick  [Illyana Rasputin, New Mutants]; Cloak and Dagger; the Beyonder; the Watcher [good television series setting there, especially for those who recall, "What If...?"]

DC - The Phantom; Mxyzptlk [I stand by the cartoon, it's pronounced "Mit-zul-plick", dammit!]; and possibly Aqua-Man [like the Flash, whose TV appearance was yet brief; great potential, though mainly to fuck it up]

Antarctic Press - Warrior Nun Areala

London Night Studios - Razor

*pauses*

Dammit, pizza delivery is late.  How can I be GEEK without my online fast food order?!

*shakes his fist at the uncaring ceiling*

LadyRainfire -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 4:57:52 PM)

[>:]  Darn it, it was Ceiling Cat... If You're going to shake Your fist at the ceiling, it's Ceiling Cat sniggering at You, Love... Always making fun of us geeks.

ETA - Aqua-Man, didn't Patrick Duffy do a ripoff in the 70's called Man from Atlantis? And there was the movie The Phantom starring Billy Zane.....

bipolarber -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 5:05:05 PM)

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

I especially liked the "tag" after the end of the credits. Samuel L. Jackson never got a bigger reaction out of an audiance.

The only thing that made me go "oh, comon..." was the impact in the desert. Stark should have been a little smear in the sand...

But, my two favorite bits? 1) the solution to the "human sheild" problem during the villiage rescue... [the audiance in the screening I went to came unglued.. I haven't seen that kind of reaction since the original Star Wars] Where he uses a familliar "face regognition" system to pick out the bad guys.  2) the fire extinguisher gag.

I agree with the Watcher as a tv series, and Cloak and Dagger would do well on the big screen; Aquaman, if done, I would hope not have the hook..... [&:]

Ceiling Cat...... [8|]

Yes, on Duffy, and a sad yes to Zane. [:)]

Lumus -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 5:30:17 PM)

It did have potential, too...

...and then the episode where he played the electric guitar.

*sad*

Yes [:)]

I think they could do better now..... and I think they're supposed to be seriously considering a JLA flick.

Ugh...... when it works, it's great, but when it doesn't, we get Daredevil. There was no excuse to fuck that up.....

AAkasha -> RE: Iron Man kicks off the summer movie season (5/5/2008 5:49:12 PM)

Does the hero get tied up?

aidan -> RE: Iron Man kicks off the summer movie season (5/5/2008 6:35:02 PM)

Hehe, yes, actually he does.

And there's a pretty funny scene with his assistant walking in on some robot bondage action.

"Let's face it, this isn't the worst thing you've ever caught me doing."

ShaktiSama -> RE: Iron Man kicks off the summer movie season (5/5/2008 6:35:25 PM)

Lol...no, but he's occasionally trapped humorously in his armor, and given that a major portion of his cardiovascular system can be removed with a decent pair of pliers, you have the ultimate in "breath control".  [;)]

Leatherist -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 6:46:31 PM)

I've always wanted a power suit-ever since I read "Starship troopers" by Heinlein.

The screen version of that one totally sucked. The armor was a joke.

I liked the destruction and technical finesse in what I saw of the trailer. I used to make plate armor, and I am setting up a new shop with cnc machine tools.. The future will be interesting. [;)]

Alumbrado -> RE: Summer movie season kicks off with Iron Man (5/5/2008 7:08:28 PM)

Speaking of guitars, did anyone else notice what Tony Stark could afford to have laying around his pad?

I grew up buying the first Spiderman et al., and Iron Man was the last comic of which I really looked forward to getting new issues...the thoroughly flawed Tony Stark was more grown up and appealing... (then I switched totally to science fiction and gave up childish things...LOL)

This movie was one of the best experiences I've had in a cinema in ages... pure entertainment, and light years ahead of the recent spate of comic movies, just as I remember the original IM comics leaving pimply Peter Parker and stuffed shirt Clark Kent in the dust.
