So, after having pnuemonia and (SURPRISINGLY) finishing all of my antibiotics {yes, my name is kali, and i'm an antibiotic abuser} i somehow quickly developed some kind of respiratory infection... That was about three weeks ago. Went back to the walk in clinic today and the doctor wanted to put me on steroids (prednisone), until I quickly explained to her that I'm allergic to it. Her solution? She thought i should go into the hospital....... Anyone have any suggestions on treating asthma issues other than steroids? Thanks, kali edited to add by allergic i mean hallucinations, suicidal ideation, etc...

Albuterol. A bronchodialator inhalant medication used to treat asthma.

Well, the inhaled forms of steroids are more localized so they may be an option. Have them set you up with out patient respiratory therapy perhaps but really keep in mind that breathing is good. I am so sorry you are going through this!

Albuterol, to my knowledge, is no longer available. Proventil is prescribed in it's place. edit to add that it's albuterol, but the delivery is a bit different (eco friendly) and it tastes funny. Perhaps a nebulizer would be helpful or at the very least a nebulizer treatment at your doctor's office.

I just got my new albuterol prescription today ... filled it with no problem. to the OP - That is your best option

Argh, I want my albuterol in the ungreen version back. I think it's good until the end of the year, but I'm on the other now.

You know my medical history...was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma this year. Even though I've never had an asthma attack in my life yet. Anyway I have albuterol...no problem with the script.

Albuterol is a good solution, however it will make you lightheaded and you can buy rescue ephineprine otc in the form of brochial mist. It works for enviornmental flare ups. You might have to ask the pharmacist for it directly as sometimes they put it behind the counter since people steal it to make meth. Hope that helps. I have an 60% decrease in my lung function and I too refused to take anymore steriods because they have terrible side effects and these two are what I tend to use.

re: albuterol... It is no longer available in generic form....both Ventolin and Proventil are the brand names currently available.

i have to agree with everyone else about albuterol. i have chronic bronchitis (which is rare for someone who doesn't smoke) and if it gets really bad, i take a "fun" trip to the ER for my "Puff the Magic Dragon" treatment - it's what i call the inhaler treatment since it makes me look like a dragon - and my prednisone prescript.

Okay really for me who is sooo asthmatic it aint even funny... I have tried everything form home remedy to the medications that I hate taking. I have done breathing treatments of Xopenex and taken the famed albuterol inhaler. I am currently on azmacort but I hate taking the stuff. You get the jittery feeling and the heart racing from the medication opening your lungs up ( the whole broncodialator effect. If you can get away with it and its not that bad to need the medication. Try Warm/ really warm washclothes on your chest to break up the mucus that builds up. Try to use a tea kettle to inhale steam which also breaks up the mucus. Just be carefull when doing this. Lay down on your left side and take slow deep breaths to control your breathing. Also a warm bubble bath may help.. warm tea to drink.. Also make sure you drink lots and lots of water. The more water you take in the better your asthma symptoms will be.. But sadly when all else fails you have to resort to the inhalers and breathing treatments. I have had asthma since I was 12 and it is no fun at all. good luck with everything
