Yes, Asher, I know about salicylic acid. Aspirin was, like, my third or fourth experiment in 1st semester Organic. It's an ester made with salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. What other wonder drug was marketed by Bayer around the same time which was also made with acetic anhydride?

we starting a scavenger hunt? or are you saying that 2 seperate products mutually make each other bad cause they share an ingredient
my point was that there is a plant that creates asprin, or at least the active ingredient...

for the record, whereas I dont give a shit what you put into your own body, and indeed think legalizing and taxing drugs could help the economy, I find the whole arguement of "It comes from nature, so it must be safe" to be absolutely retarded, lots of dangerous things come from nature... like cyanide...

I agree, that is a foolish argument, but one which New-Agers are particularly fond of. New-Agers are often fond of a lot of goofy-assed stuff.

Depending on which requirements you have, that is not too difficult, or too expensive, to archive.

Justme I'll agree with you there. And what's one of the ways to stop  people from ODing? Couldn't possibly be destroying the source could it? BTW I'm not just an advocate for eliminating this in Afghanistan...grow pot and sell it legally in the US...like alcohol most peope will get ill before they kill anyone with the grass. Other drugs aren't quite the same.

With very few exceptions, the bolded sentence is pure horseshit.  Opiates, hashish (marijuana), and cocaine were legally available well into the 20th century.  Drug-related crime and violence during that time was nowhere near the problem it is now, after these substances were banned.

You want to solve the drug problem?  Make it legal, let the Afghanis earn a market price for their opium crop, and let the fools that insist on drugging themselves to death remove themselves from the gene pool.

Instead of burning the poppy fields, give the Afghani farmers a loan to buy fertilizer.

HippieKinkster...you didn't pay attention to where the money goes did you? Let's not get into the number of drug related deaths in the US. I'm all in for a little smoke here and there...this shit ain't just a "little smoke."

Smoke a little....smoke alot, you're still a smoker/contributing to the problem. Can't have it both ways.

Nothing real exotic. Melting Point apparatus, Sohxlet extractor, a couple chromatography columns, Rotavap, reaction vessels, distillation apparatus, GC/MS,  heating mantles, nitrogen, hydrogen, catalysts like LiAlH & palladium, full supply of reagents & solvents, hotplate-stirrers, thermometers, volumetric flasks, pH meter, pH standards, vacuum flasks, vacuum pump, lab stands, clamps, fume hood, sep funnels, buchner funnels, West condensor, steam bath, ice bath, analytical balance +/- 0.1mg., Mettler XP56 microbalance 0.001mg., Mettler XP1203S Precision balance, autopipettes, titration stuff, IR spectrograph (NMR would be waaay cool), polarimeter, filter paper, glassware, safety equipment,

I'm sure I've forgotten something important.

One of the main issues people are missing is market price. Heroin and opium only command the prices they do, due to them being illegal. Dealing with the consumption end is too costly overall. We already have way too much of a prison deficit in trying to knock that down. So is the supply end. So the obviuos target has to be a middle man. I would suggest paying informant rewards by the kilo amounts seized-for importers and exporters-the higher in the organizations-the more they would pay. Including relocation and plastic surgery expenses, if that is what was needed to keep them free of retribution from the cartels. And change the law to allow them to be in court by video conferencing in these cases-to further assure thier security.

Cut the smuggling ties, and you will kill it.

We could have dealt with the meth problem long ago-by simply banning worldwide certain cold medicine manufacturing. It's not as if the phmaceutical companies would go broke from losing a few products. It's far too costly to produce independently of those firms.

This is fucked up. Here's two direct threats to the US. Afghanistan supplies 98% of the world's opium for heroin. And direct emenies of the US like the Taliban openly tax these local farmers and use the money ot buy weapons. Anybody else find the problem with the situation of leaving the crops.

Strategically, the unit needs to evacuate the locals or at least give them warning before destroying every inch of crop there.

Shit like this is where our tax dollars and solider's blood are going. It's a waste of lives, time, and money.

Makes me goddamned angry.

boi

Yeah, when I saw that news item, I thought the same damn thing.

"war on Drugs" eh?

No, they dumped that all over north eastern Canada and then sent in teenage kids to clear the brush. Now those fifty something kids have some of the highest rates of cancer in North America.

Hippie, I think kittin meant an attractive lab assistant but we all know that the disfigured, half mad ones make the best helpers.

helicopters, salt. Salt meet poppies, ground-lie fallow for the nest 50 years-or get rid of poppies to avoid this happening.

Which kills more people, opium or aspirin?

Per capita of users?  That would be opium/opiates, Hippie.  Both are naturally occuring substances that relieve pain.  Only one turns users into junkie-scum though.
You sure about that? I cannot find a source that breaks out DIRECT drug-related deaths. Direct would be overdose, since moderate use really doesn't do much. No liver damage, no brain damage, no nothing, really.  Unlike the NSAIDs.
http://www.drugwarfacts.org/causes.htm

I have not ever read about a plant containing aspirin.

My doctor doesn't want me to take aspirin at all except for a 81mg tab per diem for cardio purposes, yet he gives me oxycontin 20mg. 3 times a day. I must be junkie scum, eh?

You really don't know what you are talking about, do you? Just repeating the same tired trash from the "drug warriors". Why don't you educate yourself, if possible?

Why is it we Progressives can always find source materiel to support our positions, and the Regressives just babble and beat their chests? Such a mystery.

Hippie, your link says exactly the opposite of what you tried to argue in the first place, and that is without getting anywhere near a per capita of users standard.  Why do you assume you can just throw out bullshit and get away with it?

Your statement about not knowing where aspirin comes from is pretty well contradicted by other posts, by you, on both sides of this one.

60 mg of oxycontin, daily?  I tend to reserve "junkie scum" for those on the illegal side of the market.  That dosage would produce a perma-stoned individual (whose personal opinion about their functionality would be irrelevant).  They might be occasionally amusing, but not someone worth the risk of trusting.  We've already established that your posts are completely inconsistent.  Is that Scooby-Doo I hear saying "Clue?"

Why is it we Progressives can always find source materiel to support our positions, and the Regressives just babble and beat their chests? Such a mystery.

Short term memory loss, combined with opiate-induced narcissim seems the best explanation for such an inaccurate belief system.

And why is that so-called "progressives" are only able to stick around a discussion when they get to define the opposing opinion?  I used to work the marjuana legalization table at Portland's Saturday Market.  I think our drug policy is horribly flawed.  I still refuse to act like useless junkies are "cool" or entitled to jack shit from me.

I'm calling this crap strike two.
