i have a laptop that is about 5 years old, its a compaq nc6000 that i currently play wow on, so i have only 1.60 gb of space, i was wanting to play eq now as well so i would need about 3.5 of space....
so i was wondering if i could get a 4 gig flashdrive and put eq on there and play off that?
would it work?

Probably not. Flash drives are meant for storage and not to actually run programs from. Just by a bigger hard drive or a new computer. Some used hard drives are very cheap and easy to install in laptops.

If you are going that route, get an external USB drive (the actual hard drive kind), not a flash drive.

But likewise, you're getting towards the point where your hardware is so old it's quite possible you can find a computer that is vastly superior in all ways for about twice the cost of an external USB hard drive.

Something to think about.

Not in a laptop, though... If you can find one worth using with a live battery for a hundred bucks, i'll take two.

For the OP, does your laptop meet the other requirements for the game (RAM and processor speed, graphics processor)? For something that old, i suspect that even if you have the hard drive space to store the game, it'll run so poorly that you won't want to play it.

However, if you do have enough RAM to run the game, you should be able to run it off a flash drive... the bottleneck is going to be the USB 1 interface, which will slow down an external hard drive just as much as it would a flash drive.

Honestly if you Play WoW why would you play EQ? just have too much money each month? :P
You could go the external HDD route, but personally Id get a new system, since the reqs keep changing

Don't think it'll work.  The flash drives usually don't have the necessary speed to run a graphically intensive game like EQ or WoW.  You really desparately need to upgrade your available space.

How much RAM/what video chipset are you using, too?  If it's a five-year-old laptop I can't imagine your games run terribly well on it, especially if you've got The Burning Crusade expansion or you're planning on WoTLK when it comes out.  The requirements keep going up and up.  I wouldn't be surprised if WoTLK comes out and requires a DirectX 10-compatible videocard.

Are you just looking to play the ORIGINAL EQ? or EQ2? I can tell you 100% for sure your laptop would die on EQ2, while EQ1 would run *decently* at best.
In regards to question, how big is the actual hard drive? 5 years ago they didn't have terrabyte drives, sure. but they had good sized ones. Laptop standard was like 30 gigs if I remember right. You SHOULD be able to free up some space by removing unneccesary files and the like from your machine without needing to purchase more. The best thing to do is run through control pannel -> add/remove programs, and simply take all the filler crap you don't use. If there's nothing you can ditch, deleting old data you don't need works as well. However, if you can't get rid of anything, then a flash drive won't be an acceptable option. The speed is way too slow, and there's about a 90% chance the game would laugh and refuse to run from it (though it makes me want to try.. hah!)  An external drive will still be slow, but is much easier than getting a new internal hard drive, considering you'd have to move all your old data over after reinstalling Windows. You'd be much better off getting a newer machine, like everyone is suggesting. Something in the range of 600-900 dollars runs games decently, especially if you bag a last year's model on deep discount. Things to look for there are "discrete graphics" which means it has a seperate video card from the motherboard. This means it has dedicated memory and doesn't share, as well as a much better graphics processing unit. If you are going for EQ2, you'll probably need to look in the 1200+ range if you want anything showing you a decent representation of what the game should be like =D
