Kalista07 -> Blood pressure issues (5/13/2008 7:24:13 PM)

i've done a lot of looking online, but have not been able to come up with any real helpful information.  i just wondered if anyone here would know anything.  About 6 weeks ago or so i was put on high blood pressure medication. Things started going better after that blah, blah, blah, blah.  Until yesterday at work. Things continued not feeling right, my brain was like thinking through molases, i was exhausted, my motor skills were delayed and finally i began to feel dizzy.  i went and had one of the nurses at work take my blood pressure and it was 82/60.  She sent me to the emergency room, where it was back to normal when i got there.  However, while i was laying there it dropped back down to 92/65.  The ER doctor (who was slightly less than helpful) told me he thought it was just a virus.  Meanwhile, i'm frustrated because i can't find ways to increase my blood pressure.
Any suggestions,
Kali

Have you called the doctor who prescribed the BP meds?  You might need a dosage adjustment.  I wouldn't take advice from anyone but your doctor on this one. You don't want to fool around with home remedies.

There are a lot of different kinds of medications for HBP and they work differently for different people.  When I first started taking medication for it, the first week, I had terrible side effects.  My doctor changed it to a different one, and I've been taking it with no side effects for 10 years now.

YMMV.   Tell your doctor asap and follow his advice.

You didn't mention this, but the ER doctor should have recommended a follow up appt with your PCP as soon as possible for a recheck of your BP as well as a possible change in your medications.

You need to raise your blood pressure?  Move into my house for 2 weeks, an almost guaranteed cure.  Ok, now kidding aside...

The medication your dr. has you on, is that for high bp or low bp?  Has he requested blood tests for you?

Edited to add... I went back and read that your med is for high bp.  I would guess that your med needs to be adjusted by your dr.  Please call and make that appt. to see your dr. today.

Your dosage or medication is wrong for your body. Go see your doctor and discuss altering it.

Your thought process was sluggish, and body was tired because not sufficient oxygen was getting to your brain and body.

Extrmely low BP can be as dangerous as very high BP

Do not try and "do" something to get your BP up into the normal range. Cardio (like walking to the ER) would have made your heart beat faster and bring your BP up but it is not a permanent fix.

GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!

Buy a blood pressure cuff.  If you don't know how to check it yourself buy one that does it for you.
Check it numerous times a day and record each reading.  Stop taking the meds if they are making you ill.

In a couple of week's go back to the doctor with your new cuff and records.  Tell him or her what is going on.
Tell them the last time you took your meds...how they made you feel.
Check your cuff against whatever measure they get.  So you know if both are in synch with one another.

Your BP will be different each time you take it if you are relaxed..sitting versus lying down or standing.
So, try to take your BP in the same position each time you take it.

Generally BP does rise under stressful conditions like the ER.
You might also want to consider your salt intake if your BP is naturally high.  As well as get some exercise as it helps a body overall but also helps us control stress.

Good luck

contact your doctor before stopping any cardio medication. Some must be slowly reduced over time and under a doctors supervision.

edited to add...again i cannot stress enough that you contact your PCP NOW!!!

Please don't just up and stop taking the medication without speaking with your doctor. Call and let them know you're having problems. If things got bad enough for you to go to the emergency room then they are definitely bad enough to be calling your doctor. I really hope you feel better soon.

snappykappy -> RE: Blood pressure issues (5/14/2008 10:53:02 AM)

snappykappy -> RE: Blood pressure issues (5/14/2008 10:56:32 AM)

everhope -> RE: Blood pressure issues (5/14/2008 11:45:06 AM)

only your MD can  help you with this, Kalista. obviously you need to change or adjust your BP med.

have you made an appointment to see your MD yet?

servantheart -> RE: Blood pressure issues (5/14/2008 12:18:52 PM)

Don't waste any more time reading what everyone here thinks.  Get yourself to your doctor post-haste.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Blood pressure issues (5/14/2008 3:30:14 PM)

call the doctor.  from what i understand, it takes many different tries to get the right meds for each individual.  and the folks i know on bp meds have said once one bothered them, it never got better.

some friends of mine have gotten it right after trying 2 or 3 meds, some it has taken more tries, but they all have, with the help and good communication with their dr,  finally found one that worked for them.

Get thee to thy doctor...STAT! Not a good idea to go stopping or changing meds without consulting him or her first. When in doubt and unable to reach doc, a pharmacist can sometimes be helpful, but the doc is always the final authority. Unless you like playing Russian Roulette?
