subtee -> "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 12:45:16 PM)

You Brits have a different word for everything

With this thread's title, taken from a post on another thread, I'm imagining a dude with, you know, his head in a little cap knotted under his chin...instead, and to me inexplicably, he was under the hood of a car.

What else?

me thinks you are taking the michael out of me lol [:o]

divi -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 1:06:17 PM)

what about that whole knickers in a twist.. that one always made me laugh

LadyEllen -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 1:10:00 PM)

What about you lot though?

Imagine, walking down the street with your pants showing!

I'll give you that one...idiots.

How about "telly?' Why not TV? How do you know if it's the TV or the telephone?

cjan -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 1:52:25 PM)

I always thought "knackered" sounded kinda sexy/dirty, as in "I'm feeling knackered".I guess I associated it with knickers and had a mental image of, ummm, soaked knickers. Some English expat friends of mine recently told me that the term derives from taking an old , worn out horse to "the knackers", where they were , apparently, put down.

a TV is a bloke in a frock!

You watch the telly - no one watches the phone (apart from those waiting for it to ring); how's that confusing?

And its just patent cruelty to have trunks put on your cars - all those elephant amputees when you could have had boots fitted instead... tut tut!

He might keep his gear/toy bag in the 'boot'.  (trunk)

[edit: so much slang in the UK rhymes I can never keep track]

That's not sexy.

What about "the loo?" Why the loo? Reminds me of The Battle of Waterloo, which is also not pleasant imagery in terms of the bathroom...or! What about "water closet?"

beargonewild -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 2:01:29 PM)

Then you got, bangers and mash!

sappatoti -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 2:01:55 PM)

I guess I never gave the differences much thought. I worked with a guy from London for a couple of years, so I quickly learned that bonnet, windscreen, and boot were all automobile parts.

There's more than a few US-only oddities. While living in Chicago as a child, I can remember many adults referring to the telephone as "the horn."

;-)

Boots are made for walking! And that's just what they'll do...etc.

LadyEllen -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 2:09:57 PM)

Of course!

But whats with "sneakers"? Anyone wearing them is a sneak?

Bunch of yampys, thats what

E

subtee -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 2:14:13 PM)

Hahahaha "sneakers."

What's a yampy?

LadyEllen -> RE: "...his head was stuck under the bonnet" (5/14/2008 2:41:35 PM)

Well, all grockles are yampy - how's that for a clue?
