Naturally, the looks will also play into it. Zebrawood is a personal favorite, but for simple utility and affordability, I've always liked poplar... easily worked, and available at most well stocked lumber yards.

I take it you don't want to just modify something pre-existing? A ping pong paddle, or a paint stir stick, or a fish cleaning platter?

Asher, this is my line of work.  i'd say cherry or maple..they are both very solid and "heavy".  and they both finish up beautifully in their natural states...a coat of finish and they will be long lasting and durable.

I have/had a bigass collection of wooden toys, thanks to those nice folks at Toys in the Closet....  My favorite is TEAK, lightweight, but strong, seconded by cherry.  Top line just as a fetish object is ebony, I have  all sorts of things made from it.  It;s superdense, just amazing stuff.  But, I cleaned out the wood collection, since I don't have a lot of use for it.  It was getting kind of crazy for awhile there, just getting stuff on the "ooh shiny!" qualities of the grain!  Oh, I have the CUTEST little heart shaped paddle from the Toy Bag, someone gave it to me for a gift.... dark red wood, something Brazilian.

Anyway, TEAK.  Plus, they make boat decks from it, so that attests to its durability!

It doesn't sound like an easy wood to work with:  Be warned that zebrawood may look like an amazing exotic wood BUT it smells like its name sake.. it is the absolute worst wood I have ever planed and smells like your toilet backed up. Aim to plane it just before you leave for the night and leave the window open to clear the "scent" out before you return.

More info on working with zebrawood here.  If you want to use it as a veneer with something else as the core, you can purchase it here.
