Misogyny. that's it. That's my whole problem with the "I love you too much to beat you" argument. It makes me think that the only reason he was beating her in the first place is because he wants to punish women. I don't want to be an object of hate. Hey punish me, I love it, but don't do it because you hate me. Do it because it makes you hot. And that will be true whether you love me or not.

Some people think of slaves as a class of lesser people not an equal relationship role. I can only guess this is the case here. Either he has to get a new perspective or you need someone that sees the relationship roles the same you do.
