 I took in a 'victim' for over a year, paid for her to come to Michigan and stay with me until things settled for her.She refused to work, to clean or run errands for me. That is all that I was asking as 'payment'. In exchange she had free run of my house, cable TV and high speed internet. All utilities paid for and most of the food was paid for by me. It took over a year to get her out of my house. She was appalled at the idea of working or supporting herself because it wasn't that way in 'N.O.' so why bother now? She received FEMA checks and other government aid while living with me. The entire time she watched as I struggled for SSI or SS or MediCaid help because I physically can't work. She regaled me with stories of how her family used the system, how all the friends she had used the system. At her age (32) she had long been adept at using and scamming. It was a normal part of her life, and the life of every one she knew. I found out much later that where she lived had not even been touched by Katrina. She moved up here to avoid the mess and hassle of rebuilding and cleaning up her city. Now I am not saying that every person is like that, but she is my own personal example of generational welfare and the attitude that comes with it.

Maybe you should put your money where your mouth is and do what Camille did? She took one in - obviously with good intentions - only to discover that no good deed goes unpunished. Here in Houston we took in 150,000 and wish we had sent the TANG 147th TFS to drop napalm on them instead of the Coast Guard to rescue them. As for generalizations on how well behaved they are - I dare you to walk through the third ward in Houston - what we call "little NOLA" or "The Mog" alone. EVEN during broad daylight... Never mind at night, walk through there during broad daylight, passing out free food - and let us know how you make out... I mean that, Ill go to HEB and buy $500 in groceries for you to distribute to them if you have the balls to go into The Mog to hand them out??? Anyone here in Texas think Kittin could go into "little NOLA" on a "humanitarian aid mission" to help them and then make it out in one piece???

You're pissing and moaning about 'Katrina refugees' (great way to aneliate them from their own country, by the way, to call them that)... if it makes you froth at the mouth so much, start a petition to get rid of these people.

Yet you dodged the question - how big are your balls? Interested in coming to distrubute $500 in free groceries to these people? Willing to bet you ass that your right about them and know more than we do? All you have to do is go into their neighborhoods in broad daylight to give them free stuff! Sorry but i'm confused. How did a thread about a man convicted for spitting in the face of an officer degenerate into a free-for-all about lazy New Orleans residents living off welfare?

Ok here are some real examples.  I agree with kitten and I was there, hands on sleeping in a tent at night and working my ass off during the day, in New Orleans after Katrina.  I spent my time away from NO here in Lafayette working to set up temporary offices and find temporary work for people.  I spent my weekends here setting up a "Music Camp" to give the displaced kids something to do with their time.  If anyone thinks that the only people who actually care about people who are in trouble are those that aren't involved then they are mistaken.

I know people abuse the system.  I know there are assholes and jerkwads living on the system but then there are assholes and jerkwads who aren't living on the system.  I saw tons on "respectable" businessmen come from all of the US to "help" by getting every fed dollar they could while providing very little in terms of benefit for that dollar.  There were also people who came from all over who actually did help.  There are users and abusers on and off of welfare.

I'm glad I spent my time wading in waist deep "hoax" trying to find bits and pieces of people's lives.

As far there being a huge group of people that live off of the government, there is that group in every city.  When you congregate people with little or no income, little or no education and little or no hope into one area you get a ghetto.  Every city in the world that I have ever been in, and yes I do travel,  has them. 

As far as the rhetoric about being Christian, what gets said sometimes makes me want to vomit -- it destroys the name.  I don't know what bible you guys read but in the one I read Christ was asked what was truly important and the response was to put God above all else and lover your neighbor as yourself.  To me that says do all I can to help out the guy on the street.  I try my best to live up to my own morals -- sometimes I fail sometimes I succeed.  My spiritual thoughts are about what I should do not about what others should do.

As far as the OP goes, I can't really think that someone who bites and spits in public as a means of "defense" could be considered sane in anyone's book.  I don't believe in putting insane people in jail for the crime of being insane.

Question wasnt anything personal about your life... It was if you have the balls to put your ass where your mouth is and to go into little NOLA (aka "The Mog) In Houston to PERSONALLY (without police escort - cause they wont go there!) in broad daylight distribute $500 worth of free food to these poor downtrodden souls that we are all so wrong about according to you.... You dont seem to be stepping up to the plate.... Seems you talk the talk but are unwilling to put your ass on the line to go help the people that you think are so wonderful and are being unjustly charectorized.... Anyone else notice the waffling??? Shes pretty liberal, but doesnt seem to want to step up to the plate.... I repeat the challenge - Ill buy $500 worth of groceries for these "poor katrina refugees" if you will in broad daylight go into that neighborhood to hand them out...

Oh contraire... "No" is a valid answer.... Actually, it is the smart one. But I think you have just lost your status of being the Mother Teresa of the American Welfare Parasite / Homeless Dreg and Katrina Refugee. Now that we have established that you aren't so fond of them yourself - at least not fond enough to trust them with your safety - you can stop preaching to those of us who call them as they are. "No" was actually a very smart answer.... Its always nice to see a brain that goes with a bleeding heart....
