No historic English person could speak English, not sure when English come into being but before then all wars were conducted through the communication of mime.

Justme, Richard may have been essentially a frog, but he was King of England, and in those days you couldn't neatly assign nationality as you can today. Especially when it came to Anglo-French bloodlines...

there were several crusades ( I think 5) and not all were led by Richard ;)
The first was led by Godfried of Bouillon if I am correct...from Belgium (propably French then)

Close -- Gottfried of Bouillon was one of the first over the wall during the First Crusade.  There were arguably nine crusades (excluding what may be seen as the present one) but several were so badly organized or fell so close in time to others that it might be considered to be as few as six.

(This is not addressed to you, Justme696)  It's sad when all of the knowledge some people have about history is from watching Hollywood films.  Unfortunately, it's all too true today

Latin, Anglais ou Grenouille, c'est du pareil au même. [8|].

To be precise, his name was Godefroy de Bouillon. He was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, near Calais.

Richard the Lionheart, or Cœur de Lion
quote:

Although born at Beaumont Palace, Oxford, England, like other early Plantagenets Richard was essentially French. When his parents separated, he remained with his mother. He was invested with her duchy of Aquitaine in 1168 and with the county of Poitiers in 1172. In 1170, in accordance with custom, his elder brother Henry was crowned king of England during his father's lifetime, as Henry III. Historians have named this Henry "the Young King" so as not to confuse him with the later Henry III of England, who was his nephew.
Richard was an educated man who composed poetry, writing in French and Limousin. He was said to be very attractive; his hair was between red and blond, and he was light-eyed with a pale complexion. He was apparently of above average height,[9] but as his remains have been lost since at least the French Revolution, his exact height is unknown. From an early age he showed significant political and military ability, becoming noted for his chivalry and courage as he fought to control the rebellious nobles of his own territory.

He was born in Oxford, and his father was King of England [8|] . But yes, as I said, bloodlines were very mixed up then. I take issue with this, because I feel Richard's plight. I share much of his national confusion lol.

the last crusade was nice. A blind man fom Venice tricked all in paying..and they never went ( or something similar, I forgot the exact details)
Venice hads lots of trade with Egypt. And they, Venice, also were the biggest transporters of goods to the holy land.
But they choose for the money from Egypt (muslims)..and sold the last crusade.
Damn smart that blind guy..lol

Well, let's not forget that the Bard signed his own name with a number of spellings.  They weren't as anal retentive about spelling as we are now

So we are agreed then that Britain had nothing to do with those malicious Crusades?[8|]

I rewatched that what is his name..Monty pythons guy series about the crusades 2 weeks ago.
HE made fun of LIonheart talking in french to his people..and then cursing because they didn't listen to him  :P

kittinSol -> RE: US soldier shoots at Quran for target practice (5/22/2008 3:02:10 PM)

Caught red-handed [:D] :-) . There was so much mixup between France and England, it makes me laugh when I hear either countries go on about being mortal enemies... they mixed their DNA, languages and worse over the centuries :-) .

PS: Godefroy is the French version of the English Godfrey. Either countries actually claim him as their own.

kittinSol -> RE: US soldier shoots at Quran for target practice (5/22/2008 3:05:08 PM)

Yes, I agree. This charming medieval interlude was far too pleasant for a derail: we must go back to snide remarks and being shitty to each other [:D] .

Only nine crusades ? I have seen more than that on this board alone. [:D]

Justme696 -> RE: US soldier shoots at Quran for target practice (5/22/2008 3:26:17 PM)
