I just got the Mirena done a week ago and although my periods usually only last three days I have been bleeding on and off all week. Has anyone else had this happen as a side effect and if so how long before it goes away? I read the Mirena pamphlet and website and all it specifies is "irregular bleeding" but no real specifics. Any feedback would be most appreciated.

Heya,

I'm in my (counts) fourth month on the Mirena.

I bled a liiiiiittle bit for about a month.  I went to the grocery store and bought super, super thin "thong" panty liners and just wore them in my underwear during the day (I didn't notice any spotting at all throughout the night) - it protected my panties pretty well, and made me feel a little more comfortable.  Since they're so thin, it was barely noticable.

Since that first month, I've only had one period, a couple weeks ago.  The cramps were worse than when I was on the pill, but I bled all of 20 minutes and it was over.  Hello thin panty liners again.

I promise it gets better, and so far I'm thinking it was waaaaay worth the month, and the initial discomfort of having the IUD put in.

I've had Mine for a little over 8 months.  I had a really bad time getting it in (I've never had kids and My cervix didn't want to open for it), and I bled pretty heavily for 2 weeks after getting it.  My doc said that was all pretty normal, but throughout all of it I was wondering how it could possibly be worth all of that.

But now I know that it totally is.  After the initial bleeding, I've had one period, Thanksgiving weekend, 2 days, very light.  (This is after years of huge heavy periods that lasted as much as 12 days.)  I've also had some very, very minor spotting occasionally after particularly... er... "enthusiastic" sex.     The doc says that's normal too.  And other than those two small things, I've been blood free, cramp free, and happy as can be the whole time.  I adore My Mirena and wouldn't go back for anything in the world.

I hope your experience turns out as well as Mine has, KCherry.  Feel free to send Me a note if you have any questions or want to talk.  As you can see, this is something I'm very happy to talk about.

I got the Mirena IUD in order to help minimize menstrual bleeding that has been heavy since menarche. The first month after insertion was terrible. I didn't stop bleeding for about 3 weeks, although most of the bleeding was fairly light. I experienced a lot of cramping too, something that was mostly uncommon in the past. The following three menstrual cycles were still sort of heavy, but didn't seem as bad as those before the IUD. At least I didn't experience the gushing I would get with the heaviest days. But this last cycle seems to be like those previous to have Mirena inserted. I experienced gushing again and heavy bleeding for days 2 through 4. From the very start to the very end has been 9 days although only 3 of those days were the worst and 3 days were very light days. I hope the bleeding gets lighter. If, after a year, things aren't any better, I am going to have it removed. I've been experiencing some things that I think may be attributed to Mirena and I'm willing to deal with it if my periods become lighter. But I won't put up with it if each menstrual cycle continues with heavy bleeding.

Sorry, this really doesn't answer your question. I had my IUD placed on February 4th so I guess I'm still in the early stages of all of this. But to specifically answer your question, from what I have experienced and from what I've read at a variety of sites online, it isn't unusual to go through what you are experiencing, particularly within the first month after getting your IUD.

I hope you will update us on how things progress. If you like, I will give you an update of my experiences too. I'm still hopeful things will improve.

Try and stick with it - it does get better.

I got mine done in November.  I had on and off heavy/light bleeding for about 3 - 4 weeks and very very crampy for 4 weeks.

I had another period in January.  I haven't had a period since then!!!!!!!  It's fantastic, no pain, no mood swings, no period at all.

Everyone is different though, but generally it works well on most women.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!
