BBC Click is a technology programme (FYI).  On the forum here, plenty of people ask advice on what programmes work and which do not.  Building a PC from scratch can save you a hell of a lot of money and even if you own a fully functional PC or Laptop, they can still be enhanced and work faster with the freeware you can download from online.  However it is risky as some free downloads can add spyware and some people have no idea where to start.  I found this article a good source and have many of these free downloads myself or positive experience of them, including AVG,  Zone, Gimp, Firefox, Opera, PS E, Media M and Open Office.
 
Just thought it might be of interest to people as a good resource.
