Not looking for converts, thanks. I consider central Arkansas to be far too stupid, too racist, too "Bible Beltish" to warrant hope for them. I'm just bringing up the news of the day, and getting some kind of discussion going on it. The "gaffe" was the subject of the last three hours of coverage in this last evening's news cycle, and already major members of the DNC are calling for her to pack her bags and kindly disappear. Arkansas won't vote for Obama? You may be right about that. Luckily, Arkansas doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. I suppose it'll depend on how well she can spin it, if the "gaffe" has any traction or not. After all, she's cozied up to the worst of the GOP lately, Scafe, Rove, etc. She goes back on her word about not making FL an issue, invokes racisim, cries foul sexisim when it's suited her, lied about being pinned down by sniper fire, blah, blah, blah... Yeah, she might win, whoever the hell she is, anymore. I wonder whatever happened to the woman I actually admired when this whole circus started, so long ago? This "mere gaffe" bringing up the spectere of assasination, in a race charged with racisim (your own post shows you are aware of it as I am) sexisim, and people who want to see this quagmire end... ant any cost...to bring up the possibility on national radio that perhaps the front runner could be shot down as Bobby Kennedy was... to suggest that... and to allude to it being one of the reasons you're staying in the race... and to do this the same week that Ted Kennedy finds out that he has an inoperable brain tumor... You don't think that says anything about a certain lack of character, on her part? Perhaps a lack of some modicum of sensativity? When I said "discuss" it's because I want to know what all of you think. Is it a tempest in a teapot? Or do you think this is so far over the line, it's going to crush her ability to make it to Colorado?

BP, I have to say that this is by far one of your more interesting posts, save your own bigoted views on my home state. I do actually agree with the too bible beltish part though. Some of these people will burn you at the stake in the name of peace, love and god. As for the Hillary you admired? She never really existed. The woman is a fraud from the word "Go." The longer she tries to prove that she is everything to everyone, the easier that false front is for people to see through. and, she doesn't have a lack of character ... its just an abundance of BAD character. I'll be honest, the longer Obama keeps trying to run a clean campaign despite her garbage, the more I like him.

Irishknight, (I've found I'd better make sure whom I'm responding to, or else I have absurd claims lobbed at me) That's pretty much my take on it too. Hillary started out as a strong woman, and I tried to ignore the "cold bitch" stuff so many in the other camps kept saying. It just seems that the long, long primary race is really doing it's job... it's giving us time to turn the rocks over, and see what's living underneath. I started out pro Clinton... (I thought Obama's being a freshman Senator was pretty much a negative) ..I was remembering how well things went under Bill. Strong economy, relative peace, low unemployment... I was hoping for a return to that after eight nightmarish years under "Bad King George." But you have to admit, we're really seeing what the pressures do to thise candidates. And frankly, I really don't care what she meant by the statement. It could have been a total misstatement... (although the audio seems to say otherwise) But the way she handled it, with a "soft" apology and no admission of perhaps screwing up, reminded me too much of the current administrations M.O. The fact is, the statement is being interpreted as a possible hope by her, that she might still take the nomination... over the bullet riddled body of Barrak Obama. Like I said, let's see her spin her way out of this one.... (at least we now have entertainment for the long three day weekend.) ... it should be quite a show. If she CAN recover from it.

I wouldn't live in Conway or any dry county for that matter, but I happen to love living in Hot Springs. I've been all over the country, and there isn't a city like it. Unfortunately due to my recent lay off, I'm going to have to move more than likely. Arkansas doesn't have any more stupid, racist, bible thumpers than any other state. People that say things like that are bigoted, myopic fools. I love how liberals like to pretend to be the champion of the working class, than they turn around and insult them in the same breath. If you understood politics, than you'd know that small states are vital in close elections. This election is going to be close, just like the last two. You may not be trying to win converts, but Obama will have to if he wants to win in the general election. McCain is a moderate, Obama is not. Republicans, Democrats, and independents are all mostly moderates. Obama is doing well in the primaries because the core liberals are showing up in droves for them. But, Obama doesn't have a chance in hell of winning in the general election. He's far too liberal, has no experience, and doesn't have a family name to fall back on (like Bush did). Reagan Democrats and a large portion of democratic soccer mom types have already indicated they won't vote for him. McCain stands a chance of getting cooperation from Congress, and he has a track record that proves it. Obama will not achieve a damn thing if he gets in; he doesn't have the connections.

John Kennedy got shot. So did his brother Bobby. Wallace, as noted, also ended up a target. A nutjob tried for Reagan. Abe Lincoln... There have been plenty of other assasinations, and attempts at such over the last 200 years. American politics is steeped in guns and blood. Which just makes her statement even more stupid, and less forgivable, since she's just as much in the crosshairs as Obama. So is McCain. (Violent nutjobs exist on both sides.) As I said in the original post.. I'm just stunned by the sheer stupidity of bringing this up.

slaveboy, I have lived in Ar for most of my life. I was born in Pine Bluff and raised in Sheridan. While I will agree that we are no more bible beltish than other states, I have to state that we are probably a bit too much so for our own good at times. You mentioned dry counties. Why else would we, or anyone, cut ourselves off from so much added revenue? There is no good reason. I don't say that to knock a particular religion but an attitude that this part of the country is having a hard time shaking. and, for the record, I happen to love my home state enough that I left everything I had been fighting for for years to come back. I pray to the goddess that I never have to leave it again. BP, I am impressed that you admit to the exist of nutjobs on both sides. I am actually starting to think that we could have an interesting political conversation over a cup of coffee without one of us getting yelled at. I'm not sure if this is a new you or just a side I've not seen before. When you aren't angry, you make some very good points.

sb4u, Sorry to hear about your layoff. Hope you don't have to leave, since you obviously like it here. As to if I will leave this state in the next few years, that remains to be seen. I find working with the general public of this place to be a scene out of "Deliverance" at times, yes. (Walking around "Toad Suck Daze" for an afternoon will prove that to just about anyone.) But the population, and the state, is changing. Slowly, but most definitely. When I first arrived here, I threw myself into local polititcs as much as I could, focusing on helping to get the antiquated "sodomy" laws overturned. ( I hope my meager efforts helped in that success, although it was in the works long before I arrived.) Now I'm focusing my "bigoted" efforts on preserving the rights of straight, co-habitating couples, and gay and lesbians, to have foster children in their care. Arkansas itself is beautiful... it's just some of the people here that make it seem ugly. BTW... I still think it's a cool hat! The "sweet monkey Jesus" comment is something I picked up from a website called "Twisted Kijiu Theatre", and yes, you gus set me quite straight (so to speak) on my screw up with McCain's Mother's Day ad. Feel free to keep beating me over the head with it, if it makes you feel superior.

I`d love to see a joint ticket with them both. The Hillary haters bore me. Still haven`t heard one thing that she`s done or a position she has that`s bad. And, I`m not talking about killing Monica Lewinsky or giving a BJ to Vince Foster ,either. I`d like to hear some legitimate criticisms of policy or voting record. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Though Mr Obama may be slightly to the left of Hillary,they`re both very much moderates. If what`s happened over the last 7 years isn`t radical,I don`t what is. Of course,McCain is Bush III x 10.

Six, if we don't count then neither does Minnesota. If an election ran close enough to need a handful of electoral votes, ANY state could count. I admit the likelihood of our six votes being a deciding factor is slightly less than Minnesota's 10 being that factor. Guess what, we are both living in states considered small potatoes by the candidates. They all want the 55 in cali or 27 in Fl more than our little 6 or your 10.

Irishknight, I moved here with my family when I was 5. I grew up in Hot Springs. Now I wouldn't live in a lot of different areas of Arkansas, but Hot Springs is great. We have culture here, plenty of restaurants and clubs. It's not too big, and it's not too small. I have left a few times since I got out of college, but I have came back. We have a laid back way of life here that's incomparable to most places I have been. Yeah we have problems. The prevalence of dry counties is up to the people in each individual county. I don't know why they do it, but that's on them. Yeah we have a lot of problems here, but what state doesn't. As far as the bible thumpers are concerned, they really don't matter. They are loud, and they get heard. But most people ignore them, even in this state. Bipolar, thank you for the sentiments about my layoff. It's alright, I hated that job anyway. I just wish there were better jobs in Hot Springs. I won't live in Little Rock, so I am going to have to move. As to seeing Deliverance types at Toad Suck...shit you see people like that at any kind of local festival or county fair in small towns across the country. Go to a bus station or a Wal-Mart in any city in America and you see people like that. Urbanites have their fair share of trashy people. It's not just the rural states.

sb4u, good choice on avoiding Little Rock. Unless it has changed drastically in my time away, I wouldn't live there either. Unfortunately, it is bible thumpers who keep the counties dry. Then those same people who fight to keep the devil of liquor out of our county greet me at the store in Missouri where we have to drive to get beer. Thats what I am referring to by the "bible belt way." I have seen it all through the south and parts of the midwest as I traveled. So, at least on some issues, they are not being ignored ... yet.
