I'm putting this on here, even though it doesnt pertain to the lifestyle. I've not been able to find the answer anywhere else. I have been going through perimenopause for the last 10 years or so. In December of last year, my period lasted 13 days. Granted after the first 5 days of a normal period, it was spotting 24 hours a day. After that month, I've had a normal period, 5-7 days. Until this month. I've not had a period this month. I had all the signs of my period starting, the heaviness in my legs, the bloating, the irritability, even down to the rash I get every month next to my right breast the day before my period starts. My question is this. Is it not unusual when skipping a period during menopause to have all the symptoms of starting, then not starting? I dont go into the Dr until next month, but was just curious. I'm not complaining about not having a period.....lol. Glad I havent had one this month. I know I'm not pregnant as Master had a vasectomy and I have had my tubes tied, long before we ever met each other.

Even when I skip a period, I still get all the signs that it's going to flow then, it just doesn't. I only had three periods all of last year then in December I had a normal period and have had one every month since then. I wouldn't be concerned about it, but since you are going to the doctor anyway, I'd certainly mention it to him. You might want to consider HRT or something and that's an issue best discussed with your doctor.

Thank you so much Celeste. Everyone I know went through menopause due to surgery, and didnt have the signs of an impending period then......lol.

Trying visiting a naturopathic doctor. They can advise you on supplements and diet tips to help even all that crap out/eliminate it altogether.

I had the same thing while moving into menopause. I called them "ghost periods". They didn'tt occur often.

I went through a real crazy perio I had menstrual cycles that lasted 3 weeks with 10 days of that were extremely heavy which went on for about 3 years I had a couple no bleeding cycles..I was also experience nightsweats and hotflashes . then suddenly before or just after period with intercourse I would start bleeding then the one time after I continue hemorraging for 3 weeks with increasing heaviness which lead me to going to the hospital to get checked out that was when I learned the lining of my uterus was shot from the heavy long cycles and I also had a tumor so then had a hysterectomy , make sure to mention they changes to your doctor ..sound like mostly all is normal.

This is a little different but I think will still answer your question. I had an endometrial ablation done in February of this year because my periods were so long and heavy (literally months and months at a time) that it was affecting my every day life.

Instead of doing a hysterectomy (I didnt want to recup for 6 weeks if there was a different way)I chose the ablation. Voila', I am one happy camper. No more periods! ....But I still 'feel' like my period is going to start. I get my nasty horrible headache every month and my boobs still become sensitive every month, etc. I asked my Dr. about it and she said its perfectly normal because your body 'thinks' it should be having a period so it goes through the motions. (she said it a lot better to me then me to you just now) hahah.

Anyway, My point is, I really do not think you have anything to worry about but I would also mention to your Dr just to have all your bases covered.

If your ovaries are still putting out the hormones, you can feel this way. I had a hysterectomy at 32, but kept my ovaries. For the next 10 years, I still had PMS with the breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, mood swings, and ovulation pain, but no monthly flow. Since the actual menstruation was the worst thing for me, I could live with the other symptoms. This became a little more erratic and severe after I turned 40 and was approaching full blown menopause (family history of early menopause), so I am sure periods would have been sporadic and hellish if I still had a uterus at that time. I had the ovaries removed last month and the daily estrogen makes me a happy camper. When you see your Dr., your estrogen levels can be checked and a little estrogen therapy would help a lot if age is not a factor. I know that this happy ride of mine will come to an end one day when my Dr. tells me I'm too old and I have to give up my hormones.

the symptoms for me where caused by endometrial cancer....to which i had a full hysterectomy one year after...with kemo and all that goes along with that...its best to just talk to your doctor...pettingdragons

Depending on which hormones the doctor puts you on even in menopause you still have a period. Some don't, some do. So when you do ask about hormone therapy ask the doctor if you're going to have a period.

I would urge anyone who is considering HRT for menopause symptoms to seriously do some research before embarking upon it. It seems weird to keep something going that is supposed to be naturally coming to an end. I don't think I would consider HRT without trying other therapies first.

I haven't had a period since Aug '07 yet still have all the signs/symptoms each month that it's coming....even PMS! lol

I would have given similiar advice a year ago ..now that I am living/experiencing it first hand and on the rollercoaster for the past 6 months ..my tune has changed.

Not everyone has a natural end....symptoms vary greatly from one person to the next, some suffer severely to the point where it severely affects daily life, such as severe night sweats, hot flashes, inability to sleep, depression, loss of bladder control, palpitations/racing heartbeats that can lead to dizziness, and whole host of other problems. The decision to treat and with what is dependent on the individual and their particular symptoms and health. Some are lucky and go into menopause fairly easily but others will go thru hell

Premarin offers the most consistent delivery of estrogen over a 24 hours period compared to other estrogen type therapies, which quickly peaks and drops as a result many women feel far better on it than synthetics(yes I know the arguements against) but is the reason some doctors will recommend.

For those that have early menopause or sudden due to surgery if given estrogen early on it can actually help prevent heart disease, but if you wait till later(a couple years passes) will do nothing to prevent and may actually cause, so timing has been found to be important. Though there are herbal options there has not been enough studies on to say they are safer, if you decide on a herbal or other alternative option you should let your doctor know as some as not recommended for certain health conditions.

Your doctor should be willing to sit down with you and discuss options, explain the risks and benefits of each ..if necessary ask why a certain treatment is chosen, also discuss length of time to be on ask about warnings/risks of suddenly stopping a treatment, you may likely need to have bloodwork and other tests done to help the doctor decide which course is best suited

I completely understand the entire early-menopause and HRT treatment for women in their 20's, 30's, etc, I'm talking about women for whom menopause is happening naturally, as part of the life cycle. As I said, for me, I probably would search out other therapies first, especially considering that my mother had estrogen-receptor breast cancer and I've had a (non-cancerous) lumpectomy. It's more risk than I'd be willing to take.

Unfortunately I can NEVER be on HRT. Ive had strokes and have a hear condition that uf I did would kill Me for sure. So I will suffer greatly Im sure. BUT still not worth taking the risk.

i've been really lucky. i've passed the one year mark without a period, which i evidentially the signal that one is in menopause, and my peri-menopause period only lasted about 18 months. i never have hot flashes or the other debilitating symptoms some women suffer from, but i do still get what one member above called 'ghost periods"; s'times complete with the requiste zit. i know i'm gettin off easy and i'm grateful.

I went through all of these sames things until I discovered the most wonderful day of my life, surgical menopause.
What you are going through and experiencing is totally normal although it drives men crazy.
The worst thing they did was put me on the pill. I had migraine headaches and would be on the couch for five days trying to work, and turn around in two weeks to have heavy bleeding again.
So, my blessed grandmother and the hospital paid for the entire surgery themselves.
I do not recommend the depot shot. It causes strange things to happen.
All you can do is pray for this to end it's natural course or seek surgery.
The surgery was not bad. I was on my feet the second day. I was home the third day.

The average age of the onset of menopause is 51 years, and it is most commonly occurs from age 47 to 53. Perimenopause is the period immediately before and after the onset of menopause, and averages 4 years.

I think you have to have 12 months without a period before you are considered infertile.
