Geekness & BDSM

I was looking at a thread in Ask a Mistress. Poor Brett was looking for advice and the thread turned into a “who’s the geekiest”. This isn’t a criticism btw. I love how we digress.

But now, the question at hand:

Has anyone, other then me, noticed a high ratio between being a geek and being kinky?

- LA

P.S.: Advanced apologies for anyone offended by me comparing the kinkies to freaks. I've come to adore the word freak and use it in a non-derogatory way.

I work at the Ren Faire and at a haunted mansion. I work in Information Technology at a college.... my shoe laces don't match....

Geeky enough?

I suppose that depends on what your definition of 'geek' is :).

Indeed it does sfgrrl…

As you probably already know, in today’s society, the word geek is primarily described as one very adept with computers and/or immersed in sci-fi / fantasy world. If you follow the link to the conversation that inspired this thread (which is in my initial post) you will get a better idea of what I’m talking about.

There is also the notion of the carnival performer… any of those around here? Now that would be really kinky!

Along with being technologically savvy, it can also have the added connotation of being less than adept with regard to social skills. The term can be used positively or derisively, depending on the context.

But where is 'geek' in relation to 'nerd'? :)

Well, it would stand to reason that many of the folks who visit online BDSM venues would be. The non-geeks (at least those who, unlike me, don't work on a computer for a living) are out ridin' a harley or something. There is a high occurance of "kinkiness" among "geeks" though. Long before the 'net went commercial (meaning that the only folks on here were computer professionals, students, scientific researchers and the like; yes, mostly geeky), news groups like alt.sex.bdsm and alt.sex.spanking were alive and well, and boasted some of the highest traffic and message counts on the news servers.

Take care of Yourself.

All of the above, plus...

I dont tie my shoes. I tied them loose when I bought them and slip them on when I need to wear shoes.

I worked in IT for over 20 years.

I dance Jitterbug / East Coast Swing 4-6 nights a week, and had a pair of Van's canvas slip on tennis shoes (red/white check) made into dancing shoes with chrome leather soles put on.

I play an on-line role playing game where I run around and kill things with swords and magic.

Myself, I haven't noticed anything. Then again, look at who is saying that as well.

Anyway, while running a group. I have to say at least in my area there is a very wide percentage of attorneys and teachers who are into the scene.

Myself, in my spare time I build computers. When I have spare time that is. I'm a professional, I help people for a living. Only use a pc for notes. Yet at the same time I have a job I work with people there too.

I honestly don't know what I would be considered. However I would be honored to be called a geek. Look at Bill Gates.

~~chuckles.........

hmm thinks of the people who beat on me.. and the folks who i watch get beat.. ..

i can honestly say there is NO correlation between jobs and kink (in my world).. i know folks in just about every aspect of workplaces who are kinky......... there does seem to be a higher rate of EMT's and medical folks.... but perhaps that is just in my circle ?

i think that is NOT true of the online bdsm world..i think more folks who are online are into some aspect of computers, simply because they have more time to be online and are more likely to use the computer to explore different areas of interest..

I have never eaten the head off a live chicken in a carnival show. Apart from that, the word "geek", in its modern usage, pretty accurately describes me.

And yeah, I don’t even like cooked chicken so forget about biting their heads off ;)

Signs that I am a geek:
- The "technical abilities" on my curriculum vitae is the longest section
- I actually have the word "technology" in my graduate studies program title
- I actually have the word "technology" in my job title
- I’ve seen every single episode of Buffy & Angel at least once
- My personal library is filled with Bradbury, Adams and the like
- The last 7 seven people I’ve been intimate with I met online
- Academia turns me on
- Intelligent geeky men & women turn me on

That's my opinion too. It's good to see others.

Any ideas why anyone?

It was alt.sex.bondage not alt.sex.bdsm (and then migrated to soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm when spam in asb got out of control)

I was a regular at asb and ssbb, and I've never considered myself to be a geek. *shrug* Perhaps it's another one of those self-identity things that seem to irk you so much.

Ahh.... the 'academia-old' question. I tend to divide it as Geek: primarily tech-inclined vs. Nerd: primarily humanities-inclined. (E.g. the geek gets off on talking about Linux systems while the nerd gets off on discussing the ridiculous fifth declension of Latin.) The problem is that a lot of not-so-'techy' scientists have identity crises.... My ex, who studied theoretical mathematics and enjoyed computer games as much as parring Shakespeare quotes with me, protested my terminology very very strongly.

In my limited experience, there are more geeks than nerds into bdsm. While i do admire geekdom greatly, i myself identify as a hopeless nerd who happens to be into science, and do hope there are more of us.....

I think you can pick any personality type and say "aren't there a lot of XXX in kink these days".

I think a lot of the geekiness that's around (which I admit to finding sexy), may come from a lot more of us using computers now, and having a wider access to kink via the computer.

Computers aren't just for the geeky anymore.

But then, I also roleplay (AD&D wise, though it's been a while).

Captain of the chess team. Tuba player. Star Trek fan (although I refuse to learn Klingon). Played much D&D. Read Tolkein. Like Jazz and Classical. Online as I type. Geeky enough?

That said. I'd recognize a chess player at a play party or munch. Never met one. Ditto local tubist who graduated highschool around 1983. There might be a STAR TREK bdsm convention for all I know. (Slave girls wear green paint? Male Orions are blue.)

Add fat and you got a dork. (You can criticize your own group and still be politically correct.)

Wow iwill! I thought you had blocked me!

I’m so happy you didn’t and that you’ve decided to play nice too and not revert to extremes. It warms the cockles of my heart! :)

That can't be right. One of the biggest dorks ever was Eddie Deezen.
