Ohwow Maya I've never heard anyone that has dealt with saliva gland ones!Questions please?I've had them probably 20 years and they say age makes fixing them worse...?How did they fix yours?Did it really eliminate pain?I've mondo TMJ, can only open 7 millimeters and I am hoping hoping hoping that some of the problem is due to the saliva gland stones but I'm also worried because of the poor results when surgery is needed.

Maya2001 -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/29/2008 12:25:25 PM)

I can't really tell you much you probably know far more than me.. all stones I have had have passed with out the need for surgery, they one they planned surgery for has caused my face and throat area to swell up so they scheduled and emergency surgery  when I went it I told them it was better they gave me some lemon  to test and did the scope as well and then sent me home and told me to return to the hospital if it occured again  ...I was told it is more common with seniors and than quite often surgery is needed to remove the stone and it it is causing continuous problems that is often best to remove the gland ... also it  also possible that part of cause can be related to cancer ...

For me it has only been a problem for the last 3 years ... but I think like with any other surgery the older you are the harder time you have bouncing back, longer recovery time  and more possible complications especially to anesthesia so more prep work prior to surgery to prevent  eg tonsillectomies a child can be done as day surgery or released next day and is normally eating solids a couple days later ..I was in my 30's  when done spent 5 days in and could not eat anything solid for 3 1/2 weeks and when I first did  I felt like I was eating red hot razor blades my recent hysterectomy(done internally)  took me longer to recover from  fatigue wise than it did to recover from than my ovarian cancer surgery opened abdomenally  27 years earlier..I could be wrong but I don't think that the surgery is necessarily less effective due to age.   Once the stone passes there is no pain   other than some tenderness for a couple days, though when the stone is present trying to eat is absolutely excruciating , I have mild TMJ have not heard of any kind of relation between the 2

Boy is it ever! Thanks Maya for sharing your experience. Maybe its a blessing I can't get it taken care of due to no insurance? The recovery doesn't sound fun at all.

Kidney stones really suck. There's not much you can do once they are there just wait until they pass. Prevention is another issue.

Most Kidney stones are calcium based and more likely to form in acidic conditions so a change of diet can reduced the likelyhood of them occuring again. Consult a nutritionist and your doctor.

I've been assured by people who have expelled both, that there is nothing to envy about severe kidney stones.

They are correct.

I've passed stones twice.... the first time, well, the fucker didn't seem to want to come out....I had to pee, but couldn't. I ended up in bed, my knees up to my chest, wondering if an alien was going to pop up or something.

azropedntied -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/30/2008 5:54:05 PM)

Hey All , Back from the hospital , the best thing i can tell you is NEVER  trust the first doctors who just want to go home and say naww you really don't need a specialist .After the first er  drugged me up on happy shots and  pills  then told me oooh it shall pass in 24 hours , i went home . Well drugs wore off and i call all the referred specialty docs i was given , the quickest i could be seen , Monday as in 4 days , and NO WAY i could stand that . Here is a hint ask what hospital the doc is working at then pop in the ER .I did just that trick and got it taken care of , and from what he was saying it was a good thing too as i had renal shut down and blockage  on 70% of left side and close to total closure on the right  side with blockages from the stones .I am posting this to everyone if you have this problem Make sure you get it taken care of and i for one shall be growing gill s as from now on i shall be drinking massive amounts of  water .THANKS AGAIN for sharing .

greetings to all.
pardon me for my ignorance,
but can all kidney stones be passed via urine,
or do some require surgery ?

camille65 -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/30/2008 6:04:09 PM)

I'm so glad you're doing okay! And you know.. that is a good tip of finding out which ER they are at.

azropedntied -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/30/2008 6:15:42 PM)

Camille , warm smiles , yes doing much MUCH better t/y so not the pain levels i was dealing with prior , Its like a car was parked on a garden hose kinda thing . I was more than a lil freaked out post op about peeing blood but they all assured me it too shall heal and pass .It did frighten me after  all was said and done ,when he said  i coulda died and glad i listened to what my body was screaming at me about .
> The question about can all stones be passed through urine , is a NO not all  as i have just experienced .Most do and can be passed but i guess mine was a particularly bad case , with fast moving infections that can about somewhat suddenly , and renal shut down and failure .when in doubt have it checked out ASAP  and in my case glad i got second and third opinions  which proved to be correct .Also insist on x-rays and CT scans  .

Maya2001 -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/30/2008 9:07:23 PM)

Glad all is well...  when urine back up into the kidney it can result in death  females have a larger urethra than males ..so males can have a greater likelihood of having a total blockage .... the vet has shown me stones removed from a dogs bladder and some can get  well over an inch in diameter..diet can help but you need to  know what type of stone you are dealing with

the Mayo clinic site has some good info for prevention of

Not all stones or renal calculi can be passed. Ones that are too large may be broken up by ultrasound or (gulp) a type of explosive. (I have seen the explosive procedure and I do not beleive it is used in the US. A very small shaped charge pushed through the urethra and guided by camera to the stone. It tends to leave jagged peices of stone that do damage on passing). Actual surgery is rare but does happen if the stone can not be safely broken by other means. I have seen some that fill the entire space inside the kidney. Stones of that size usualy are the symptoms of a greater problem.

I had one about a year ago that caused bleeding, it wasn't nearly as serious as the one you seem to have had from your description, but it bled none the less.  I actually wound up a bit relieved to find out what it was given how the fact that I was bleeding and in pain someplace neither should happen had freaked me the hell at the time.  I don't remember how long it was, but I want to say it was at least a few weeks before it fully healed and I stopped getting occasional red spots in the front of my underwear from time to time.  A folded up soft papertowel took care of that problem while it was happening once I realized it was more than an "ok it's healed now and shouldn't happen again this time" though.

By far this isĀ  the worst pain i have experienced , and i wish to not have this happen again .

One of my cousins said the pain of her kidney stones was worse than giving birth. You have my sympathies!

Again thanks for all the support while i went through this it really was helpfull and awesome , the support n all no so much the condition and pain factor .
I just had the stint removed and i was Shocked at just how big and long that sucker really was .
I also wished to share the preventive advice my specialist gave to me on this follow up visit .DRINK WATER , hydration is key .He said to me the pee should be the darkest color in the morning and you should try daily to make it as clear as you can through water intake .YES i know it is tough drinking all that water i myself am having trouble and forcing myself to drink it in abundance , i feel like i am going to sprout gills any time soon ! Yet in reflection I have changed as i NEVER want to go through this stuff agin .So i am passing free  and simple medial advice on to my fellow Kinksters here .Raises his ICE WATER  Cheers to all in good health .

Alumbrado -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (6/11/2008 1:48:13 PM)

For prevention, one thing I was told was to make sure that the water is consumed early and often. I had spent the summer landscaping, and drank a big glass of water after a day of getting hot and sweaty, my urologist told me I should have been sipping all day instead.

For recovery, you should definitely try to flush a lot of water through.

azropedntied -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (6/11/2008 2:13:04 PM)

VERY TRUE  , hydration is an all day thing every day . thanks for that addition .

Stusmobile -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (6/11/2008 3:32:06 PM)

Too late to help this time, but a great way to help the stones pass and to combat a little of the pain is sit in a bathtub full of hot water for an hour or two (with somebdy checking on you). If you feel the need to pee, don't move, just do it, you can always clean up afterwards. The heat will relax you and the urinary tract and can let the stone move easier .... not 100% sure to work but my ex suffered chronic stones and this was a great way to avoud ER rooms most of the times.

L8bloomer -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (6/12/2008 11:07:00 PM)

Here is a rather good article on kidney stones from the University of Wisconsin.

http://www.chem.uwec.edu/Chem115_F00/meyersu/project.htm

(For those who hadn't guessed, renal calculi is the fancy term for kidney stones. :)
