The church Obama chose to be a member of for 20 odd years, where I assume he sent his ___'s to Sunday School, came to a roar of "Amen" when the preacher hit the hate notes.

Do we know for sure that they really roared with approval of his literal words?

Watch a few of the sermons, DC.  They aren't hard to find in entirety.  That congregation came alive for it.

You made some points worth exploring about rascism as well, but I'm simply too wiped out from today to even think about going there.  I have this strange feeling the topic will come up a few more times in the months ahead, so lemme get a rain check on that part of the conversation, ok?

Say, I wonder if threads ever get moved from RS to OTD...

Can anyone give me anything (and i am serious here) that would inspire confidence in the character of Mr, Obama, or anything that he believes in that he won't turn his back on under pressure or through  expedience?

Can you cite a single one of the last 8 or so presidents that demonstrate in hindsight the ideal you are asking Obama alone to prove up front?

They are all crooked career politicans, lacking character, subject to a corrupt machine, and trying to feed their egos and appease the money driven system...so far Obama hasn't shown his hand as badly as the others, which has forced his opponents to get 'creative' in their mudlsinging.
I'm not holding my breath for any of them to actually deliver positive 'change'.

Doesn't mean that I'm going to look at the pile of BS made up about Wright and say 'Mmmmm...pancakes'... no matter how much syrup is poured on it.

Do you have some citations that the Wright thing is "made up?"  I've watched video of the words coming from his mouth to form my opinions of the man and his teachings (full length).  Is there some recent batch of lies about him that haven't found their way to my email imbox yet?

Actually, while i don't understand it, and tend to dismiss it as poitical opportunism, Obama's opponent withstood the embarassment of having her husband admit to infidelity, go through the ordeal of his impeachment procedures and such, and did not thrun her back on him.  There is a sense of loyalty there, even to the point of answering the pre-confession mudslinging with  the "Vast right wing conspiracy" comment.  In retrospect she may have regretted that remark, but she has never backed off of it, nor has she turned her back on her husband.
i will give Mr. Bush credit for a result which may or may not have been intended.  You can pooh pooh this all you want, but  on September 11 2001 there was an attack on US soil that killed a number of US civilians that had gone to work that day and expected they would be going home that night to their families and loved ones, but instead were killed.  The skuttlebutt on that (call it "spin" if you want to) was that this was the first of a series of planned attacks.  One of the "spin" stories is that there had been 10 teams set up to do this.  One of the first wave teams was broken up in Logan airport in Mass.  i find it difficult to believe that this was expected to be an isolated attack with no plans for follow up.  i do not want the details.  There is a benefit to not telegraphing how much is known.  To go over a few of the details, The US became involved in the Middle east, and the folks responsible for that documentable attack appear to be involved fighting people who have the capacity to shoot back in a land other than the US.  The follow ups have not yet occured.  i see it as a lightning rod effect that seems to have taken the conflict off of US soil, quietly and effectively.
I was impressed with Mr Reagan's abliluty or positioning to ask Mr Gorbachev to break down a real and symbolic barrier.  I was also impressed with his ability to bring people in (i realize that there are people who would not agree with him, but that is the nature of politics) There were quite a few who appreciated his views, and many who grudgingly admired him.  He tended to make me, and many others proud to be American, and to look at what was good, amd not only the weaknesses and imperfections.

I'd say "Random Stupidity" is the right forum.

Now I'm confuzzled, Alum.  If you mean the bit of quoted text earlier in this thread, a bit of spin control isn't going to change my perception of him, if you are referring to something else, please point me in the direction and I'll give it a read when time permits.

That the church in question was doing good work in a place that really needed some isn't going to be sufficient, any more than discovering the KKK operates a food bank somewhere would change my perceptions about them.

Obama makes a great speech but hesitates every time the speech has to be backed with action.  That is not being Presidential, no matter how you look at it.

This was the most accurate statement in my mind made in this entire thread.  Unfortunately he is going to be the one who has to beat McCain.
