Whilst were on the subject of shaving and "Metrosexuality"........

I have heard of certain Metro men having lazer treatment to permanently remove not only body hair but facial hair as well.........

Maybe if I ever win the lottery I can give that option some serious thought......not!!

Lasered skin is sexyyyy smooth... and if you live around me I can get you the hookup for laser treatments ^_^

Sorry.....wrong side of the pond......but thanks anyway.....

Some simple logic is failing us here unless we think there is some kind of conspiracy and they make the single blade razors sharper.

Look at it like a system: the first blade will do most of the work when that sharts to get blunt the next blade will take on the lead role etc. etc.

Following that logic why does one blade last longer than three or four?

I suppose there is also a factor to consider in the steel used for modern razor construction, perhaps it is that the steel is through designs on economy getting to be of a cheaper and cheaper quality, why else would multiple bladed razor heads be required when an old  single high quality steel blade does the job with ease.

I prefer an old fashioned straight razor, but, I sport a full beard so don't shave.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Metrosexuality ? (6/1/2008 12:15:44 PM)

Ya know..... I've been thinking about this thread a bit this afternoon, while in my workshop fiddling around with recipes....

I'm IN the industry that Merc mentioned has having started the phrase "metrosexual" in the first place - Cosmetics, Bath & Body, etc.  It's what I do for a living, making skin care products of various sorts, as well as custom blended individual perfumes and that sort of thing on occassion.

Watching some of the responces from the guys concerning wearing/not wearing aftershave and/or cologne, I'm beginning to wonder if plans to try and develop some specifically Male oriented products is worth the effort.  Finding product testers might turn out to be a bigger challenge than I realized!  I mean hell, how many of you would even be willing to Consider such, unless you ARE "metrosexual" ?  While I know that there's a market for things like Hunter's Soap that are formulated to have a "dirt" scent (yes, that really does exist, guys, and it Does smell like a forest floor and work to cover normal "human" scent!) - I've got guys that I know asking for it on a regular basis every hunting season - I'm not so certain now about other things.

Steel is steel and the hardness of steel compared with hair follicles and skin fragments is quite large I'd think. Therefore the quality of steel would have an infinitesimal contribution in this calculation. To produce low quality steel is possible but razor blades aren’t exactly made out of the highest quality of steel and never were. The way we produce steel hasn’t changed significantly in the years we’ve been doing it.

Quality is fitness for purpose and high strength steel on a razor blade would be pointless as the leading edge that makes the difference is a tiny portion of the entire blade.

Multiple razor heads is down to ergonomics is all I can propose to you. In my opinion you can’t compare a non disposable razor that you regularly sharpen with a disposable one you never sharpen. In terms of disposable blades there is simply no logic to the argument one blade is better than multiple blades.

Padriag -> RE: Metrosexuality ? (6/1/2008 12:23:03 PM)

Well Rhi, its not so much that I object to wearing cologne.  In my case, and speaking just for myself, most strong scents tend to tickle my nose in a very unpleasant way.  I don't know why, might have something to do with allergies or just a sensitive snoot.

If someone were to develop perfumes, colognes, etc. that didn't set my sinus off, I'd be a happier person and so too would some of the ladies in my life (considering to date me they might as well put their perfumes in storage).  That might be something worth looking into.  I imagine I'm probably not the only one.

Oh... and come hunting season I'll probably be ordering a batch of that soap... just need to make a list of how many cousins and uncles I'm buying for...

I take it from the way you have pursued this subject, that you have some kind of vested interest in the market of multi blade disposable razors?

As far as logic goes......personally I don't think it applies here.....its upto personal choice and what ever makes you feel more comfortable.

FullCircle -> RE: Metrosexuality ? (6/1/2008 12:31:57 PM)

Personal choice is based on availability. It's a shame people don't think in a logical way rather than a romantic way.

Well FullCircle........I'm sure you meant "talking" rather than taking, but that can be arranged, I for one would like to take you sometime, we could have a nice long talk about logic versus romantasism.......amongst other things.....

Oh, I disagree, my one razor is made from a high carbon Solingen steel, which I believe is made by the Swedes in Eskilstuna, it is at least sixty years old and absolutely superb. As testimony to Swedish steel, all my carving knives and cutting implements are also Swedish, Sandvik, Mora and the like.

Shaving, used to be an art, something that requires one to take a step out of the busy schedules of life and engage in a bit of personal care, something which can be akin to meditation whilst deftly removing whiskers. Using a straight blade forces one to take that step out to take care of one's appearance, and to take one's time about it.

Now I realise not everyone wishes to take time over the onerous daily task of removing whiskers, but honestly, it is time out and I enjoy it.

Just jumping in here.  Any man that uses "Hunter's Soap" is just a wimp.  Real men smell like deer piss in the season.

Emp, if I could find that which was actually usable in CP soaping - I would get it, and probably make my own specific Hunter's Blend.  Unfortunately, when it comes to the Fragrance market, some things simply aren't Usable when you're talking about a chemical process that includes strong caustics (lye) and has a high pH until it's sat on the shelf for a while.  I'll take a look at the site you linked to, and see if I can get further information there - and whether or not that site happens to have any useful links that I can follow to find a supplier of something that IS useable in the format I happen to deal with.

Thanks for the link - and the input.  It's actually quite helpful!

Yes, I can just see that, attracting a big buck by smelling like a sexy doe, does it mean one buck or all in the vicinity. The archer might get himself a not so nice surprise as some sex crazed buck takes it's prize

Vendaval -> RE: Metrosexuality ? (6/1/2008 6:24:50 PM)

I am a big fan of betting hygiene and grooming for people in general and men in particular.  Also, learning new skill sets is an asset that should be appreciated; cooking, decorating, enjoying classical music, etc.  The attitude and clothing need to be right for the occasion, whether that be an evening at the opera or a bar-b-que out on a ranch.
