A group in Tampa, Florida called "Sons of Confederate Veterans" plans to erect a giant confederate flag near a highway intersection. The flag will be 30 feet tall and 50 feet wide and will be placed on private property.

The group claims the flag is a part of history and does not represent racism. They also plan to build a monument and museum honoring soldiers of the Confederate army.

Will be interesting to see how many people want to argue that in fact the Confederate flag represents only racism.  They'll be wrong, naturally....[;)]

Aynne -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 9:34:20 AM)

Oh no not at all celticlord. It represents wayyyy more than just racism to me.  Just don't think any of the adjectives I have for it would suit either of you two.

popeye1250 -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 9:38:25 AM)

But if it were a rainbow flag...
I buy my friends up in Massachusetts coffee cups with the confederate flag on them, they love them!
They take them to work with them as a conversation starter.

It sure is a symbol that evokes a strong emotion in many people. I find it interesting actually, how it can be viewed in such diametric views and both views having basis. From PBS.com discussing the compromise on flying the flag on South Carolinas capital in 2000http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/jan-june00/flag_5-29.html

I remember when they used to play Dixie at parades and high school football games.  Of course, we can't do that anymore.  I have never understood it.  Dixie was a showtune for fuck's sake.  There isn't an offensive word in the song.  People are just silly when it comes to things like that.  I think the Russian national anthem is one of the best sounding national anthems.  It's a great piece of music.  But, it doesn't make me a commie.  The Confederate Battle flag is not racist in and of itself.  It's a symbol that means different things to different people.

Slaveboy, exactly.
And, there are probably more people who are "offended" by the Rainbow flag than the Confederate flag.
Political correctness raising it's evil head again?
I'm from Boston, Mass origionally and neither of those flags "offends" me.

kittinSol -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 12:13:50 PM)

So... why are they building that flag again?

FullCircle -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 12:17:37 PM)

I thought it said Canadian flag at first and I thought that'll be funny. I thought it was a Canadian separatist group in the U.S.[8|]

Vendaval -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 12:59:05 PM)

Thank you for the PBS link, camille.  I can appreciate that the confederate flag is a source of controversy, symbolizing many things to many people.

LotusSong -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 1:33:48 PM)

As long as a piece of fabric or a word holds power over a group, those persons will always be "enslaved".  Rise above it.. get over it..move forward. Quit giving it power.

kittinSol -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 1:35:14 PM)

So, what exactly does the confederate flag symbolise, in this day and age?

It symbolizes all the good things about Southern culture to me.  I love the South.  I was born here, and I grew up here.  Southernors want to preserve our culture, because we see it being eroded.  I get a little irritated with the stereotypes we have to endure from the rest of the country.  All modern, popular music originated here.  Jazz, blues, rock 'n roll, bluegrass, etc, etc.  all started here.  I think we have the most diverse, fascinating culture and history than any region of the U.S.  I love our food, our music, our diversity, our differing colloquial use of languages from state to state, our literature, and our entire way of life.  From the deserts of west Texas, to the bayous of Louisiana, to Appalachia....we have one of the most unique cultures in the world.  I love that about us, and that is what the Confederate battle flag symbolizes to me.

I realize that it has been used by ignorant groups like the Ku Klux Klan to divide people, but so was the ancient swastika.  A friend of mine visited India a few years ago and told me that swastikas were everywhere.  It's not a symbol of hate.  It was just used by evil people for a short period in history.  I don't think we should try and erase the symbol from history just because some disgusting vermin used it at one time.  The Confederate battle flag was carried into battle by brave men to defend their families, culture, and homes.  Only 10% of Southernors owned slaves.  It wasn't the defining issue of the American Civil War.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 2:10:30 PM)

fast reply

good for them!  the flag does not signify racism to most.  it is a part of my southern heritage, a symbol that reminds me of many things.  racism is not one of them.

it reminds me of trips to stone mountain, skiing at the lake as a child behind a boat that flew it, moon pies and coke, cold as ice from the sinclair station when i was a kid.

it is a part of where i am from, and the fact that some racist organizations chose to use it is something i can not help.  but i wont feel guilty for loving that flag when i see it flying.

kittinSol -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 2:19:07 PM)

I thought this was interesting: it's an excerpt from Camille's link.

quote:

RONALD WALTERS: Well, I think the flag is a symbol of the most terroristic and oppressive period in the history of black people in America. It brings back memories of the pain and the degradation of our people. And to that extent, you know, it's really interesting to me to hear people talk about the various manifestations of that flag. That's really beside the point. The constitution of the South is really beside the point. What's important about that is what was done, the culture, the civilization that meted out the most brutal punishment of the people you could imagine, and so that is what that flag means to most black Americans, I would assume.

quote:

ROGER WILKINS: I can understand when Shelby Foote refers to his great grandfather with warmth and affection, and I've a great grandfather too. He's buried someplace in northern Mississippi. And he was a slave all his life. Our history is often presented to us as a triumphal march from Jamestown to Oahu, I guess, and it's all been glorious and wonderful, but our history is full of pain and loss too. And this kind of debate brings out everybody's pain and - white people lost and were injured by the terribleness of slavery and surely black people were - and we've got to find some kind of middle ground to understand each other because we can't continue to use our common history or bits of it to continue to injure each other. That is not the way to march toward a common destiny.

What do you make of the above?

popeye1250 -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 2:29:08 PM)

Kittin, I'd ask them if they want some WHINE with that cheese.
It's *still* not against the law to *offend* people in this country.

Well, slavery existed under the Confederate flag from 1861-1865.  Slavery existed under the American flag from 1776-1865.  Slavery existed under the Union Jack from 1606-1807.  Slavery existed under the French tricolor at various times during France's history but didn't end officially until 1848 (of course colonial authorities subjected natives in Africa to slave like conditions throughout the 19th Century.)

So should all of these flags be banned because of that history?

Irishknight -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 2:35:57 PM)

He does use the words "I assume" in reference to what the flag means to black Americans.  Honestly, I think most black Americans have grown beyond that flag having any power over them.  I have black friends who love that flag as much as I do.  It represents history.  It represents the good and the bad of those times. In fact, it is not even "the" confederate battle flag.  There were many.

Slaveboy, good points!
And what about the British flag?
That would "offend" many Americans of Irish descent after (their) ancesters being under the oppression of the British Empire for hundreds of years!

Irishknight -> RE: Tampa to erect a huge Confederate flag (6/2/2008 2:45:30 PM)

Yeah.  No more British flags around me!

OK  I actually think the union jack is a cool ass looking flag.  I need to get one for my collection.
