* grumble grumble *  I'll take the snow but you can keep the low temps.  I'm gonna get gas for the car before the cold sets in...nothing like standing there with the wind whistling by your ears.

I got all stocked up for the storm here and it's only been a bit of freezing rain.

Status: offline 		y'know, if y'all have your passports ready (go online to get your visa), then ya can make it down here by Tuesday (Monday would be fine too, but probably cutting it too fine).

Monday = 93 degrees (thank god for air con at work)
Tuesday = 97 degrees (ditto)

tis an extremely pleasant 79 at the moment

Status: offline 		As one engineer to another, a pleasure to meet you!!!!!!And yes, my training was a combo of imperial and metric systems. Gotta love when I had to calculate the the quantity of ore in an ore body then convert that value into cost to produce and then calculate the market value in $ per troy ounce!

Status: offline 		As a nerd, one of the funniest technical debates was at work.  3 engineers were bouncing around a bunch of metric dimensions relating to an integrated circuit, and then having to convert the periphery to english.  They were practically counting on their fingers.  It's really bizarre how the semiconductor side is entirely metric, but the packaging side works in mils.

So bear, could you get work at the diamond mines?

I could though since I'm not a certified Geologist, I'd be the grunt who's analyzing drill core samples, assay samples, doing the calculations to determine if the ore body is a viable investment or not. For me to work in any of the diamond mines here in Canada, I'd have to go back for retraining before I would be hired. Since DeBeer's has a major stake in the Canadian diamond mines here, I'd have to be trained within their guidelines and policies, so I'd be looking at returning to school for a minimum of 2 yrs. The upside is the pay is damn good. The downside is I'd have to relocate to the Yukon or NWT.


eta: trade secret is there's a minimum 800% markup or more on jewelry and gemstones sold in stores. Canadian diamonds have a minimum of 1500% markup or more on their retail price.

Psssst thorn.......you don't need to go that far to see the aurora borealis, come visit me in another 6-8 weeks and watch them here with me! Use Google Earth to find North Bay and that's where I live.
