soul - ADHD/ADD was first described in the medical literature in 1845. A more thorough report was published in The Lancet in 1910. This is not a "condition of the times". It is not a "new" condition. As with many other conditions and diseases we are simply learning more each day and becoming better equipped to diagnose and treat. when i was a kid ADD/ADHD was brushed off to bad behavior and (according to my mother) drug use . Perhaps a diagnosis would have surfaced, but it was something to be ashamed of...she never tried for medical intervention because, to her, a behavioral issue was a sign of bad parenting and that was unthinkable. I am not slamming my mother as much as i am saying that was the thought process as little as 20 years ago. I never heard of it until the late 80's, then it was the buzzword for every misbehiving child out there. And actually, I only exhibited a few signs of it, mostly the unseen ones....well, unless you knew what to look for. Toss depression into the mix, and it was not a great time for me. But I have learned to recognize the signs, and can tell the difference between a cranky, tired kid, an undisciplined kid, or one w/ADD or ADHD. And I probably still have a bit of adult ADD, but again, I'm pretty much able to control things now.....unlike it was when I was in high school. Good luck ,YDD.....things will work out fine for everyone.
