Fortunately, the palm trees in front of the apartment building are small and rather protected by the layout of the buildings, otherwise, they'd be uprooted.  I have a 6 or 7' overhang on the front side of the house, the wind blew the rain inside my apartment under this.....man, it was freaking GREAT!!!!!!  But I love storms anyway.  It freaked my cats out.....it sounded like someone was pounding on the windows and door with the force of the wind and rain.  And all I could think of the whole time was "damn.....this is so COOOOOL!"  Am I warped or what?  (Wait, don't answer that.....HOLLY!  Or CD.....or Bear.....or all the usual suspects for that matter!)
