Status: offline 		Try some hoof treatments available at any feed store or online. Barielle makes a people version, but why bother when you can use the original? Hoofmaker is excellent. These products are designed to make hooves (nails) stronger, and work on people too. There are many girls that work in stables, who have strong long nails despite the manual work. It's kind of an occupational secret !

Status: offline 		Guess I'm lucky that I have strong nails, although they do split and break sometimes and I'm left eith 9 or 8 good nails. To prevent this I cut all the nails back (don't leave them ripped) and always use nail polish. This gives them extra support and stops them from splitting so much. Also remember when filing always go towards the middle as you can damage the fibers if you go from middle out. 

If you want the illussion of longer nails when they are short give yourself a french manicure without acrylics. You can make the white tips as long as you like. If my nails are at their shortest I tend to make them half white half natural.

I can't wear polish or any kind of fake nails on my fingers because apparently I have "oily nailbeds" and the things fall off in a matter of days, if not hours. Don't have this problem on the tootsies...

any ideas how to rectify it? Solar nails look so very pretty...

i keep acrylic overlay over my  real nails(no tips) but i've not had any problems with fungus...maybe the lack of tips is why, not sure.  Plus, since i have short nails for work, and wash my hands constantly, the acrylic keeps them looking good in spite of all the washing.

It certainly didn't save me from developing one that had nothing to do with nails, just through breathing the air in my workplace....

And even though I agree with you that fungus can be prevented by the nail tech's level of professionalism, why would I want to take a chance on getting even more exposure, no matter how seldom it happens,  if my nails are strong as acrylics anyway?

Status: offline 		My doctor recommended the biotin option.  I've been taking it a couple of years now.  It does little for me...yet she swears by it.
I've used the hoof and foot cream for my feet in the past.  Didn't work for my nails.  Whatever lotion I use on my feet at night also gets used on my hands.  Currently it is prescription again.

Never tried vaseline yet...I can try that one.

I eat yogurt at least 4 times a week with granola. 

I had to cut off 3 nails during the parade this weekend because they just broke off...while I was handing out registrations.

Status: offline 		I use Nailtique.  I get it at beauty supply stores.  It comes in a few formulas.  There's one especially for thin and flexible nails.  #2, I think.   You use it every day for the first week or two, then go to every other day.  It's very helpful, when I remember to use it regularly.

Status: offline 		If I had strong natural nails i wouldn't touch acrylics. I've been lucky so far and it's worth the risk for me so far to have strong beautiful nails.  Of course I'll likely change my tune if i develop a fungus.

Status: offline 		Well I admit I have great genes when it comes to nails and hair (although removing it is tough) and I simply do not paint them except in very rare or special circumstances.  All the chemicals dry them out and damage and don't let oxygen/sun work properly, so I just keep them trim, neat and buffed.

Gris, i can only speak for my girlfriends and i.
 
Lemme put it this way:
 
If my house burned to the ground, i could cope, as long as i had my UM's baby book and excellent finger and toe nails. (Toes count too.)
 
Without the nails, i'd fall apart on the spot.
 
Most of my girlfriends feel the same way.  Funny thing is, we care partially because we want to be attractive to Men (or Women) and most Men i've dated never notice!

I have a friend..yes he is a dominant.  He believes if a female cannot take care of her hands and nails..then she cannot take care of him.  Something along the lines of too lazy to take care of yourself how can you take care of me...blah..blah..blah.

Been a while since I last heard him spout off about it.
