OP, i have great hair and skin but horrid fingernails.  i just quit a job that made it impossible for me to have nice nails, so now i'm trying to figure out a way for my nails to look decent.  i'm just keeping them manicured with clear polish for now.  when i was younger i tried the gelatins and vitamins for nails but i couldn't tell that they really worked so i'm as interested as you are in the responses.

Going kind of along with this... I have a weird predicament.

I can't wear polish or any kind of fake nails on my fingers because apparently I have "oily nailbeds" and the things fall off in a matter of days, if not hours. Don't have this problem on the tootsies...

any ideas how to rectify it? Solar nails look so very pretty...

I don't know if this would really solve your problem but it might be worth a shot.. one of the tricks to getting nail polish to adhere very well is to apply nail polish remover first, to strip off any oils on the nail (obviously you need to let it try first before applying anything.)  I don't know if that would help your situation very much, but it may be worth a shot?

WTF? Oily nailbeds?

Try a different stylist; it took me 5 tries to find one i was happy with.  i was amazed at the lousy service i received at some salons.

I'm loathe to go with acrylics because of the fungal problems

Go to a decent salon and have regular appointments and fungus won't be an issue.  I've had acrylics off and on for nearly 10 years and have never experienced any fungal problems.

Wow....sounds like an incredible opportunity to me.

Have you thought about just buffing them? This gives you a nice finish and if done right looks as if you have clear nail polish on. And it is cheaper as the buffers usually only cost $5 - $10 and are reusable.

Well, f**k..now i have no nails!  i broke so many i hadda cut all of them down.  i used an emroy board to smooth the edges and polished them with clear polish.

i agree about the buffer; i get vertical ridges in my nails and it's one reason they break.

BTW...what are 'solar nails'?  Never hear that term before.

i'm so frustrated!

Many good ideas already given.
There is also a product made my Max Factor. Sorry, but i do not know the exact name of it. It is not really cheap...but not too bad.  It is in a purplish bottle and the name is like Nail strong, or Nail something.
