Oh, I forgot to tell you. I was turned on to a champagne methode champagne. Now I know what you are going to say. Anything but real french gives ya heartburn. Well there is a champagne house. They found the side of a hill in New Mexico that has the exact chemical composition as the soil in Champagne, The Champagne is called Gruet and it is 12 dollars a bottle.

luscious, my screensaver for my laptop is the bubbles ad from the Piper Heidsieck campaign....I have never had the monople, are they similar? Did you know that the Monople was found ( a bottle of the grand cuvee ) on a shipwreck that was meant for the russian tsar Nicholas? Must be good.....

Monople is much more refined. I consider Piper lower on the rung of chapagne along with Mumm. I had Crystal last year for the first time. I didnt pay for it.[:)]

stubborngirl -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/6/2008 4:34:24 PM)

lately, for me, it's been Fat Bastard (a nice cab) and Pinot Evil (pinot noir)....and then there was a malbec from Venezuela that was really nice...and none of them were more than $15..

Aynne -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/6/2008 4:37:35 PM)

Yes but for a cheaper champagne I like Piper better than some of the others in that range. I had Cristal last year in NYC for the first time, loved it but at 290.00 a bottle I think I will stick with Moet's white star for about 80 bucks a bottle. I really could not detect that much of a quality difference. But if I wasn't buying? Sure, bring on the Cristal[:D]

Aynne and Lushy, you ladies give a new meaning to the term " 'pagne slut". Pick up the tab once in awhile, guttdammit !

Btw, which champagne do you consider the most appropriate, all things considered, for lapping from belly buttons ? Or do you recommend having a bottle of the good stuff on hand for quaffing and a lesser wine for , ummm, splashing/lapping ?

Aynne -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/6/2008 5:20:01 PM)

Oh no cj, and I am sure lushy would agree, with such lovely belly buttons to sip from, we would insist on quality sparkly for such intimate sipping [;)].

Oh and 'pagne slut? why why hmph! I resemble that remark! Okay, if you insist, I'll buy if you fly.
*That just transported me back to high school and beer runs[:D]

Man .... I thought we were gonna be talkin about cheap wines.  I used to live in Amana, Iowa and I loved the local wines.  They all tended to run somewhere around 10 dollars a bottle.  They were all simple wines but they were fantastic.  You could even get elderberry and dandelion wines.
I admit that I am definately no wine snob.  I like the simple stuff.  But I have moved up from Boone's Farm.

I think Aynne would agree. Although I love a Blanc de blanc, in this instance a nonvintage that uses  a blend with the pinot noir grape , like veuve Cliquot would stand up and compliment belly button lint much better. [:D]

I had my last bottle of Pol Roger 90 Brut last November. What a fine champagne. While I appreciate champagne and sparklies, they aren't my first choice.

Roselaure -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/6/2008 7:14:29 PM)

I like the Hess Cabernet.  Fess Parker (yes, Daniel Boone) has a white Rieslingthat is lovely and a varietal red (Frontier red) that is terrific too

It is abundantly clear that there are plenty of places around the world who can produce an enjoyable experience with their wines at a range of prices.
Virginia has done some ver' nice stuff in the last 25 - 30 years, Barboursville Vineyards being not alone in making some really nice wines in the 15 dollar and up range.

Thanks for pointing them out.  I'll have to check them out sometime.  I wonder if they can ship to Arkansas?

I'm not sure if you'd be able to get this in the US, but my favourite wine is Morellino di Scansano, which is a full-bodied red and so smooth. To buy in italy it's apprx just 1 euro and whenever we have relatives that visit from there that's what they bring us back. It's the only wine I'll drink.

kittinSol -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/7/2008 6:31:34 AM)

Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle, Cuvée Alexandra, 1990. Not cheap. But worth mentioning [8D] .

sophia37 -> RE: Your favorite inexpensive wine? (6/7/2008 6:40:21 AM)

I too have bought boxed wine. And thought it pretty good as well! Also Berringers and Woodbridge make good wines of all sorts.

Do you prefer red or white wine (I won't go into the rosé debate)? For me, it typically depends on the season (the hotter it gets, the less likely it is I will go for red) but I have found that whilst you can get away with cheapish for red, a white has to be relatively pricey for it to be quaffable. I love crispiness, and have discovered Chili makes some rather nice whites.

I've only tasted one red wine I liked. It was very expensive and a long time ago, so, I don't know the name.
I prefer Chardonnays or Sauvignon Blancs.
