Hopefully i choose the right forum.

I am Shibaristi (into the japanese form of bondage) and would like to know if there are anybody else interested in this art in the forums.

I am not on the extreme tradionists end of the scala, because although i love the look and touch of hemp rope, i rig with cotton, silk or whatever comes my way.

I am actice and passive and roping since i can renember.

So is there anybody out there (courtesy of pink floyd)?

There are a great deal of us on this site that have interest in Shibari in one way or another and in differing degrees. This is just a very hard site on which to have a forum for that specific thing. The owner of a shibari supply store and his pet are, by example is on this site. We are not allowed by Terms of Service (you will see this as TOS) to name people. I have not done so myself, but if you were to search here for terms related to shibari, you might find a few names who will talk with you.

I noticed that you said you use other forms or rope than hemp, cotton, and silk. I was wondering if you have ever used climbing rope? There is a sports store in my area owned by a professional climber and he passes along great deals to the people who shop there. I can't help but think the bright colors of climbing rope would make for an interesting effect.
If you have used any if the past could you tell me how it came out?

I know you didn't ask me, for still bondage it is gnarley, but burns pretty bad in my mind.

Climbing rope is a lot cheaper than hemp rope, super strong, and yes, it is pretty. However, climbing rope is also quite stiff and does not lend itself to intricate work. Also, just like any other synthetic rope, it will friction burn skin at a much lower rate of speed.

Washing climbing rope does soften it some, by the time you've washed it enough that it's friendly for bondage, it will have lost much of its strength, still strong enough for bondage, but don't ever climb with it again.

If you're looking for cheaper/more available rope than hemp, there are cheaper and more bondage friendly ropes than climbing rope. However, if you're just getting started and you already happen to have some climbing rope, by all means, you should use it. The main thing is that you get started tying while realizing and respection the limitations of your equipment.

Count me in as being a non-traditionalist! All the ritual and ceremony that people attach to Japanese bondage I think is just a bunch of whoie that folks make up to sound impressive (Huh? You claim to follow the ancient arts of Japanese bondage, but you measure your ropes in feat. I find it amazing that feudal japan was using a European unit of measurement)

Cotton I like more for detective bondage and damsel-in-distress sort fo play rather than doing Japanese style with it. Mind if I ask where your getting silk at?

I will agree with everyone else that climbing rope is too inflexible and stiff to be of much use for tying around flesh.

And yet again I need to make a shameless self-serving promotion of flax rope. Yeah flax!

Now, Hungry......... I ABSOLUTELY AGREE............ BUT FLAX.................. it is just plain and hard to come by, too spendy for the benefit. You can soften climbing cord enough to tie. by the time it is soft enough you cant suspend a fly with it. Hemp will hold strength. I am somewhat leery of tieing a person in flax that is an eel. The abrasion resistance is not there for suspension. But again, a small perusal of the net tells me that such rope is not readily availabel for the getting thereof. Who is to say when I will get a hard-on at my advanced age and have need of rope to fix my problem? LMAO. Shibari, simply a study in the use of tying, not the way; only A way. Like arithmetic and calculus. Not something that is unattainable........I can find places to get hemp rope even cheaper than cotton (all you girls think horse leads) but cannot find affordable flax (all you girls think 600 count thread linen.....OMFG) but..........

PS Gnädige Frau but this is an very oldfashioned term, although for BDSM purposes quite good choosen.

i am exactly with you concerning the woohoo Shibaristis ( a word i made up, it is the not existing italian ending for a japanese word written in english *). This is the reason, why i wrote i am not rigging with hemp. I thought about Flax, i will have to try it.

On the other hand, i am an artist myself i have respect for the Shibaristis who use the whole Shibari concept as Art, this is my way also, using the soul of hojo jutsu and all i know about Japan. I draw when i rig.

Silk, i get from various sources, for example here in Berlin is only 1000 meters away a Shop who caters to the needs of the tamilian (?) people here in Berlin. They have everything i need for cooking and PG Tips. The last is black tea in pyramid bags.

And they have unbelieveable beautiful silk.

I am not sure that my answer will be of any help for you:-)

I could not have written it better. Start with what you have at home and start on yourself or inanimate objects. But start it.

Dosent help, but thanks anyway.

I spent roughly 2 years searching for silk rope. The whole time I was wanting to strangle people who kept on telling me that it could be found in any hardware store. I finaly wound up trading some items with a friend who had some old world war 2 parachute cord in her attic.

I am also interested in Shibari and am just beginning to educate myself about it. I am learning some of the basic ties and trying to wrap myself around the mindset. I use japanese hemp rope which I purchased online. I would be glad to hear from other enthusiasts.

I am into rope bondage..... Shibari is one of the influences that have fed my passion.

I don't get into the whole zen thing when I tie but I know my sub does particularly when I try to make the experience as sensual as I can.

My rope bag has mostly hemp, primarily handmade 6mm hemp from a wonderful pair of ladies in Toronto. There is also some 6mm hemp that I bought 150 meters of raw & am treating myself as I get time. I have MFP in various colors for my suspension lines, a few hundred feet of parachute cord for intricate ties & breast bondage. I still have some of the original white braided nylon that I got at DomDepot from when I first got into this a number of years ago.

I'd use climbing rope if I had a whole bunch come my way cheaply but seeing as I am buying all my rope, I will buy rope that better suits what I am trying to accomplish.

I saw some of that flax at Shibaricon, liked it & should have bought some!

I love bondage. There are specific conventions for bondage, like Shibaricon. I'm going to the Rope Master Symposium in Austin TX in December.

Hehehe. It cracks me up how many people call themselves 'Shibari Masters' and other such crap. The plain fact is that most of the real hoju jitsu techniques were very closely guarded secrets and maybe a handful of people on the planet actual know them anymore.

As for me, I do rope bondage. I don't even have a desire to become an expert in authentic Japanese traditional ropework. For me it would be too limiting. I use a combination of some basic Japanese methods, climbing techniques, a bunch of sailing type knots, and rigging techniques. If you're a fellow knotgeek, my work looks kind of odd, I rarely stick to any theme with my knots. But on the bright side, my bondage doesn't look like anybody else's.

Too bad in Europe there isn't anything like that, and a trip to the USA is a bit too expensive for me at the moment:s The only thing we're having in Europe is boundcon, but that's more shows and less workshops for as far as I've heard.. And althougt shows are nice to watch, I rather do the rigging myself:)
