Yup, that's my usual M.O., as well. A few chats on messenger usually filter out the majority of people, and a single cell phone chat generally takes care of the nuts that slip past the messenger radar.
If I end up having a few cell phone chats with someone, it's pretty likely we'll end up doing a coffee date. (Safe calls always in place...even during a daytime coffee date.)
Really personal info (home number, address, workplace perhaps) only happens after that.
Not foolproof - but nothing really is these days.
