Greetings A/all,

I am conversing with someone, met through other means, who I am very much interested in, but also have suspicion that he may be playing me. He claims to travel a lot to his parents and other family members, but I have just noticed that all his e-mails originate from the same IP, even those in which he says he is writing from out of town family members. My understanding, from his provider (Comcas#), which I use for other services and was able to ask, is that they do not offer any type of service that would allow using the same IP while traveling. Ages ago, I had used remote-access software to access my PC at work from home, so technically, I think he could access his home PC from a laptop and control his home PC to send mail that way, but am not sure why he'd want to do that as that would be a hassle. What am I not catching here or are there other reasons why it'd show the same originating IP? His provider already said it's not possible.  I'd like to have a more intelligent understanding of this before I address this with him. I do have trust issues, but also do not want to risk offending him if I'm missing something here.  Thanks in advance.

If you're looking at the email headers and they always have the same IP there are some possibilities.

1) If he's using dialup he could be calling in to the same access number which would likely result in him always getting the same IP. However if he is sometimes supposed to be on broadband and sometimes on dialup that wouldn't work.
2) He could be remote connecting to his home PC as you mention. It's also possible he could be using a VPN or the like which might result in his mail headers always having the same IP addy.
) He's lying as you suspect.

Reason 2 and reason blank (should have been 3) are correct but reason 1 would not result in the same IP address unless the dial up service only allowed one user per phone number. Which most do not, they have one phone number rotating onto many numbers much as a business with a multi line phone system does.

Thank you, gentlemen (or not so gentle - you please choose your distinction), for your fast replies...

I don't think #1 is applicable here as this is a broadband provider.

VPN is a new term for me. I just wiki'd it, and perhaps this is how he's setup. I want to learn more. If he had a VPN through the company he works for (he claims a fortune 500), shouldn't the IP be assigned to that company and not through the well known broadband (like I said, comcas#) provider?

Reason #1 can be true based on how DHCP is set up. Back in the bad old days when I was on dial up I always had the same IP, I could hit my home webserver for testing applications.
