MzMia -> Dollar declining in value over the Euro! No Paris for me! (6/13/2008 8:04:05 PM)

I am currently reading an article about Americans living in Europe,
that are being brought to their knee's because of the decline value of the dollar.

The author said that many retirees and students are having to take drastic measures.
In Paris: 6 croissants might cost $50, farmed salmon costs $23 a pound, etc.
Everything is costing double what it did 4 years ago.

Many expatriates are having to move to cheaper apartments or even move back to the states,
especially those on fixed incomes.

I did not realize the dollar was worth so little in Europe, no Paris for me anytime soon.
Anyone traveling abroad this summer?

The buck is worth about the same as Mickey Mouse money. It's been that way for a while. Tough for those that get paid in dollars throughout the world too, or for Euro expats wanting to visit back home - thankfully we have families to stay with and know how not to fall into the tourist traps. Though in Paris, they're hard to avoid.

I don’t have any foreign travel plans (not counting Canada) but I will take this opportunity to reiterate something that bugs me about people thinking the dollar declining is bad for Americans and good for everybody else. Economic news does not occur in a bubble. Very rarely is a piece of economic news all good or all bad. What is bad news for some is good news for others. Yes, the declining dollar is bad for Americans who want to buy foreign products as they are now more expensive but it is good news for Americans selling their products overseas as those products have become more affordable to overseas buyers.

kittn, I had no idea the situation was so bad.
Expatriates receiving fixed incomes in dollars must be really struggling,
unless they are quite wealthy.

No Paris for me anytime soon.
$50 for 6 croissants would = no gay paree for me!

Yep, it's that bad... but when I was living in Korea and was paid in won, the dollar dive meant a salary increase for me... *shrugs.

May i suggest South America?

Outstanding. I'll make a killing selling bondage gear in europe-even with shipping.

Like I said... millions of people throughout the world get paid in dollars even if they don't live in the States... everything's tied together, as you correctly mention, but it's no consolation for those people who see the value of their salaries tumble before their very eyes, at home and/or abroad... sunshinemiss, many people are choosing alternative currencies if they can. It would make little sense not to...

Mia, last year I had planned on going to Sweden, Denmark and Ireland this August but not now.
Instead, I'm thinking about going to Buenos Aires, Argentina in Nov or so.
It's 3 to 1  there in exchange!
A real deal compared to Europe!
Marc, and I'd like to buy some American products but it's getting hard to find them anymore.

Looks like the dollar is certainly dropping in many areas of
South America. {especially Brazil}

Things are worse than I thought.

Mia, the article said that the Argentinian peso "was the exception by design as it's designed to follow the dollar to facilitate travel."
But, I can fly to Dublin from Boston in about 5 1/2 hours.
From Atlanta Buenos Aires is about 11 hours! Ouch.
And Aer Lingus is about $700 round trip!
Atlanta to Buenos Aires round trip is anywhere from $1,200 to $1,600!

Sounds like you will have plenty of company from America
in Argentina!
To travel with dollars these days, you need to do your homework first!

I missed my cousin's wedding in Spain because of the exchange rate.  It was something like $1.65 to the Euro.

I did go to Canada, which is pretty even with the dollar, although the cost of goods there was outrageous in comparison (in BC).

I'm thinking Mexico.  Cancun, anyone??

Not wishing to rub it in, but I have a spell in Italy late in August and I'm hoping to be in Canada by the end of the year. My income will be in sterling and Euro.

However I sort of relate to people in North America. In my latter years in Poland, paid in Polish zloty, trips to London were too expensive. For a while instead of returning to the UK I had thought about moving south to Slovakia. Thank God I didn't because everything in Slovakia is dirt cheap and the salaries are miniscule.

I would recommend Eastern Europe.. it's Europe but often much cheaper than the Western half.

The great thing is, even with a high dollar, products in America were cheap compared to Europe, now they are bargain basement prices. I have several friends that shop in New York if they want expensive products and what you save, almost pays for the plane fare. As for myself, I'm fed up with the American border guards treating visitors like criminals so I'll do without the bargains.
