The nerve you're thinking of, of course, is the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body and consists of nerve roots running from the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebral spaces, L4 and L5 and the sacral nerve roots S1 S2 and S3 which exit the sacral foramen at those junctures. The five roots combine into one large, long nerve buncle which branches off down both legs, from buttocks to the toes on the outer, rear aspects of the legs.

Any time I use any free-tailed whip such as a cat or flexible vlogger, I put a weight belt on the person's back to protect the kidneys and I restrict My blows to the outer, fleshier aspects of the buttocks. Areas to avoid at all costs are the "saddle" or inward curve of the spine above the butt and the tops of the legs where the butt joins the thigh and any place where skin is thin or directly over bone.

Having had a pinioned, nearly crushed sciatic nerve, I can attest to the fact that damaging *that* whelp can hurt like holy Hell! It took surgery to correct the problem and fortunately, I was one of the lucky ones... it worked!

One sub I play with regularly really loves very intense caning in a strict governess/naughty school boy type roleplaying scene. I do like the pretty stripes, but neither of us liked the ugly bruises that seemed to rise to the surface of his skin several days later. I do several things now: I apply an icepack immediately afterward -- and scold him whilst applying it. Afterwards, I rub in an arnica gel and give him ibuprofen. This has greatly reduced his soreness as well as the bruises that show up days later.

Yup! The same nerve that Than had mentioned earlier.

I believe the nerve is also possible to be reached via the soles of the feet as well as the backs of the knees.

Care should be taken when caning these areas since there is less padding.

Canes have a bit more danger with the nerve I feel, because they *are* a more focused and direct impact as compared to a flogger that distributes the force of the blow through a multitude of points (the falls) rather than in one (the part of the cane that hits something). Plus you tend to use canes in places people don't find as effective (though yea they can be used there) with floggers (I see less folks use whips on the back of the knees and the feet) and they might not realize there is something to be aware of that they can affect in a bad way if they aren't being careful.

Plus a lot of folks don't realize that some folks carry the nerve closer to the surface than others say an underweight person versed one that is overweight, and some simply are closer to the surface than others - just because they are, lol.

Just a quick note on this. Pain can stay for a while after the skin heals. Muscles don't always have to be injured, to hurt. They also have memories. I know this sounds wierd. But after a bout of Strep throat my doctor told me this about the muscles that got swollen in my neck. He explained that it is why there is a phantom limb syndrome when someone looses a limb. The muscles have a memory.
