Hyperlinks IMO improve the readability of the post but, more importantly, take the reader directly to the image in its original form, whereas URLs generally require an image first be uploaded in a hosting site and then linked. It's not generally required, it is always required. The content still has to be uploaded somewhere whether the full URL is visible or just the anchor tag, what you're calling a 'hyperlink', is. If you look at the URL http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/245912main_image_1107_800-600.jpg and this link to spacewalk, they both go to the same content, one just takes up less space. ~stef
