HBYnSSQ -> Smoothing edges on a Silicone Butt Plug? (6/16/2008 3:00:15 AM)

Howdy folks!

We've recently bought a new butt-plug and it's a wonderful size/shape, however it has a tiny bit of a "seam" -- a roughness at the base where the different parts of the mold joined -- and also a itsy-bitsy (but annoying!) sharp little bump where the silicone mold's "spruce" might have been attached.

I am wondering is how best to sand, cut, shave, or smooth off these little bits of excess silicone. The plug itself isn't all that firm and I'm sure could be "shaved" but I didn't know if we'd then have an even rougher surface? We thought about perhaps chill/freezing the plug to make it more rigid, and then using a HOT utility knife? Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Not sure if experience with silicone tubing and caulking will relate directly but maybe this will help...

You probably will not be able to "freeze" the silicone unless you have access to liquid nitrogen. Silicone tube specs list a "brittle" temperature instead of a freeze point to indicate the temperature where it is likely to crack from flexure. I would expect you'd have to approach the "brittle" temp of your toy to be able to work the material. Most extruded silicone tubing has a brittle temp of around -100F.

I think your best best would be to use a scalpel or X-Acto knife to smooth any rough areas as best you can.

Good luck with it.

Fine wet sandpaper on a block. A knife will just dig in and goof it up.

Having the knife hot wouldnt do much, just make it harder to handle the knife, considering you can boil the toy, and they make high temp bake ware out of silicone.  I have heard that having rough seams on a silicone toy is an indicator of a low quality toy.  Again, I have heard that, not sure how true it is.

silicone has an odd property...
if a cut or nick is introduced into the surface of a solid chunk of it, that cut will tend to grow, or follow into its self.
like a crack in a windshield. not the best illustration, but the best analogy i can come up with...
so yea, trim the high spots off with a razor blade, or similar.
just be really careful to not "dig in"
it would be awkward if a butt plug broke apart in use.

Maybe you could just put a condom or two over the toy?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds the seam irritating! sometimes it's downright painful! Alpha thought it was in my head, I'll show him this.

I agree with Leatherist

Sandpaper is the way to go.   It won't create a nick.

Also, wet sandpaper is the way to go - among other things it means any dust is much less likely to get into the air and inhaled.

Make sure the sandpaper is designed to be wet - it should mention the word wet on the package.

Most any good sandpaper can be used wet. The thing about wet-sanding is you need RUNNINg water. Dipping it in water now and then isn't going to do it, as the friction will dry the sanding material and the material being sanded almost instantly. Hold it under some slow running water, meaning don't put the kitchen sink faucet on full blast. This will keep everything wet and moving, and remove the particles from the area. Get a fine grade sandpaper, you don't want an 80-grit tearing up your toy.

Seam edges like that are usually a sign of  a low quality toy. Either they use low grade silicone, old molds, or bad quality control, or a combo of all three.  If you buy your toys in person, check them out for bad seams, pits, bad spots in general. If you shop mail order, find out what their return policy is. Most reputable places don't want crap in their suppliers sending crap to their stockroom as much as you don't want it in your toybox.

Some very good advice has already been given and I'd side with the sanding also.Wet sanding is easier to control as opposed to the knife, which might leave a bigger blemish.Ideally having a Dremil type tool with an abrasive cap would be great but not found in youraverage home.My main comment is that I'm amazed at what I hear passes thru "Quality Control" now a days.Good luck to you and have fun.
