with regard to BDSM .. it really is  not enough to physically overpower me .. its easy, I am a girl and a fairly weak one at that .... but to intellectually overpower me - to back my intelligence systematically into a corner, to destroy me using reasoning and rhetoric .. to be better informed and better equipped to crush me in discussion ... i said this on a thread not long ago ... anyone can hold me down and fuck my body - I only know one person that can get me to hold myself down while He fucks my soul

haha, I love this one too.

Wait, whoa...  you missed the best part, Red.  (somebody else picked this one up on page 6, but it's worth repeating.) Merkin is currently the most offensive insult I've found that is applied to non-gender, non-race, and non-region-specific 'Americans.'  Gaijin was the next closest contender, and that just means 'dumb ghost people.'  Us plus Europeans.  Not even close.  I find the dearth of insults troubling, and blame my own lack of effort in finding more of them.  I am certain that there is vile invective to be found, somewhere, that applies in a general way to Americans... but that's all I found.  There you go; merkin also means, 'You cunt-rag American...'

About OOP and C#, I disagree in principle; in practice I was impressed with the argument.  But C# has plenty of legacy crap from the way M$ integrated .net concepts and all kinds of wierd studio crap in it.  Java's not what it was 5 years ago, either, which is when that argument would have held weight. Now it's kinda right, but not really.  The point wasn't which one was better anyway; the point is, code syntax and grammar has a story behind it, just as spoken language does.  At points a pretty entertaining story, too.

Human languages aren't harder to learn; syntax, grammar, slang, it's all there in code.  It's just that, even for tricky programming, you can take more time to sit back and read a cheat sheet.  For a person, you'd look kind of silly if you carried one of those everywhere.

The point of this exercise was to show that all the people going 'I'm better than you think I am, so shove your 'intellectual' self off!' look silly.  By taking the stance to it's logical extreme.  It's a BIG frickin' forum, dude was just asking for directions.

Now on page, what, 7 of this?

Hi everybody,
There is s a certain truth to what was said.  Sometimes one wants serious conversation... and sometimes banter... Don't we all understand the desire for both?  And CM does tend toward the fun and bantery sides of things.  But what is impressive is that funny people are some of the smartest people around.  Ever heard a comedien talk about politics?  the economy?  religion even... And I don't mean do a routine, I mean have an actual talk... Bill Maher comes to mind... He's funny and wicked smart.   George Carlin.  Bill Cosby.  Chris Rock.

Honestly, I don't know a whole lot.  The more I live, the dumber I get, or maybe the rest of the world is getting smarter.  But life is more joyful now too.  A belly laugh will beat out a philosophical conversation any day over here.  Mostly because belly laughs require a certain vision, understanding of the human condition, joining of disparate themes... in a word -  intelligence.... to create that response.

After years living abroad where I couldn't have in depth conversations, (because those around me didn't have the tools - the words - to verbally spar), I feel my brain atrophying somewhat.  I would love to go toe to toe with someone occasionally.  I recently posted on the slave girl thread on the gorean board (passes smelling salts around), and Aswad responded... I can't tell you how I shook.  He's wicked smart, sees patterns that would never have occured to me, and is deeply well read.  I adore that in a man and respect him immmensely.  Just responding to his words were like flicking rust off my poor unused brain.  But bless my soul, I think I responded intelligently.

Now the intellectual snobbery part... that's just ... well not my cup of tea shall we say.  If you've never read the piece "Desiderata", let me give you a quote that seems relevant:

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story.

But we all have snobbery.  It's normal.  It's natural to put people in us versus them categories. Is that not really what snobbery is?  Very few people don't do that.  I have a snobbery against deliciously beautiful women and mouthwateringly handsome men.  I am part jealous and I'm part prejudiced having been brought up to believe it's impossible to be gorgeous and smart at the same time (I know it's wrong, but it's still my knee jerk reaction, and I fight it all the time).  These boards have been a salve to that old teaching and constantly help me realize that beauty and brains really can go hand in hand.  And I tip my hat to you beautiful women and handsome men who show it over and over.

The other thing I think about is finding the balance between being a subly type and not arguing with the Domly types... that's not submitting after all... and yet I'm often at least as smart as they are.  I don't say this is true for other s-types, but for me... I find it difficult at times to stand up to the Domlys and put my full intelligence out there.  I dumb  it down for them so as not to hurt their feelings... so as to make them feel good... and yet that's silly.  But it is something I'm working on... feelings and intellect and submission all wrapped up into one.  Talking smarter than they do, living more passionately, being more worldly ... these are sometimes intimidating for me as an S-type.  How to be pleasing and be Enter Superlative Here...  But they are my truth... as are the fact that i'm an average gal... in many many ways and below average in others.  Aren't we all?

So, to the OP (wherever you went) good luck... may you find what you seek.  To all here,

peace and passion,
sunshine

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

I found resonance with this one from "the Prophet", by Khalil Gibrahn.

I stopped seeking so much validation after musing upon this wisdom.

```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Self-Knowledge
And a man said, "Speak to us of Self-Knowledge."
And he answered, saying:
Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.
And it is well you should.
The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.
Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.
Hello Leatherist,
I do love that book.... The Prophet... I have it right here.  One of the few books that actually travels with me - that and the Four Agreements, Illusions, and of course a journal.  I have somehow gotten stuck on the Joy and Sorrow chapter... thank you for pushing me past.
best,
sunshine
What good does it do me in a BDSM forum to say that I read Old English and Old Norse, and think deep thoughts about the use of foreshadowing in formulaic poetry? Yes, I'm intellectual. I'm fairly arrogant about what I "know that I know"... I spent some years and lots of money acquiring the library and the skills I have.  I'm an independent scholar, and a full time technical writer.
But y'know, there are academic conferences where I can find LOTS of people whose ears prick up when discussiong the use of formulaic constructions in alliterative poetry.  And professional conferences and associations where I can socialize and learn from others in my field.
HERE I'm interested in learning more about BDSM, seeing how other people approach things, getting hot little ideas I can take back and please My Lady with. You might try associating with the hoi polloi - it's amazing what broadening your viewpoints can do for your intellect.
for myself, i think i tend to disagree, Drifa, although it is a complicated formula, to be sure.
At an academic confrence or any other place where intellectuals gather, you tend to be able to find a reasonable number of lifestyle people.
I love finding people in which i may have several things in common.
Esp. in BDSM, having BDSM in common is just not enough. i need to have some intellectual pursuits in common, as well.
OTOH, all of my friends do not need to share all of my hobbies, and i can tailor my behavoir to be approprate to the situation. I don't need church friends knowing i got a good beating before i came to service Sunday morning. so it is kind of a both way thing.
Is there a Forum for intellectual types anywhere? Intellectual Snobs?
You might have some luck with the INTJ mailing lists. In my experience, the snobbish segment of the INTJ population tends to congregate, while the rest just have a certain disposition. If you're looking for non-snobbish intellectual types, why not just put some things in your profile to make it clear what kind of person you're looking for?
Also, don't underestimate the mutual gratification of being the one to expand another's horizons.
Just make sure their mind isn't the sort to pucker up, and you'll be fine.
Health,
al-Aswad.
The more I live, the dumber I get, or maybe the rest of the world is getting smarter.
That's always a good sign. The more we learn, the better we can sense the looming body of the iceberg under the small tip we have uncovered. It's the result of thinking critically about our own thoughts, and not just the thoughts of others. I'm perpetually filled with doubts about what I know, to say nothing of what I don't know, and that usually feeds the drive to learn more. Studies show that those who fare well on a test will usually have doubts about how well they did (unless it was well within their abilities), while those who fare poorly will tend to overestimate how well they did.
Sensei once told me: "Don't worry about it. You're ready. All good budoka are hard on themselves, and thus that feeling of inadequacy never goes away. In budo, there is always further still to go than the distance we have already travelled."
In any case, the day we know it all is the day there is nothing more to learn... a horrid thought, no?
quote:
But bless my soul, I think I responded intelligently.
Certainly, and thanks for the compliment.
quote:
Now the intellectual snobbery part... that's just ... well not my cup of tea shall we say.
It used to be my cup of tea, sad to say. Fortunately, I moved past that stage with the help of the lovely lady I've spent the last 10 years with. Which is not to say I don't occasionally shake my head at something, but no more so than anyone else, I should think. The exception being hypocrisy, which offends my sensibilities; that doesn't match well with the world we live in. That, however, is moral snobbery (specifically, the principle of integrity), to which we all must plead guilty to some extent, rather than intellectual snobbery.
Health,
al-Aswad.
That last phrase was a crusher, DMFParadox. Here I thought I had finally found another person that appreciates the linguistics, culture, morals, values, mores, history and mythology of programming as a rapidly evolving minicosmos of humanity itself, replete with a rich set of archaeological evidence to draw on, then you tell me there was a point to the exercise? Sheesh. I bet I won't even get to see this devolve into a debate on how Lisp and Forth have fallen by the wayside, while PHP and ASP are being vomited all over the place. Now I'm sad.
Health,
