ORIGINAL: jlf1961 Finally, before one even tries to blame Americans for their 'beliefs,' I would point out with more than enough historic proof, that the British Empire had one of the best records in the world for using up the natural resources of a colony and granting independance only after there was nothing left. Case in point, India. I don't think I was blaming America or Americans specifically, as I don't see it really as anybody's fault. I'm not really interested in who's to blame here. Looking for blame and scapegoats isn't going to lead to anything constructive and will only result in an argument over what has been and what should have been. The technology advanced, we went along with the changes only being able to speculate how those changes would impact on society. However whichever way you look at it the status quo has been preserved throughout. This has set up a cycle of handouts, welfare, aid, charity and a culture of right and entitlement, which in itself appears to be a vicious circle which needs to be broken but nobody seems to have a solution. What has been achieved apart from the advances in technology and improvements to the way we work and live? And can it be said that these changes benefit the majority of people on this planet? What does apportioning the blame achieve anyway? But isn't it the handouts and the aid which leads to the feeling of right and entitlement creating a nanny state which is removing the civil liberties we take for granted one by one? These are the civil liberties paid for by blood in the soil of the earth we stand upon, civil liberties which elsewhere have seen a struggle under oppression, revolution, and for which a considerable part of the world is still fighting? Take a look around you, and take a good look.. Do you see what's really there or only what you really want to see? Is not this vicious circle creating a totalitarian state around you under various guises? If this succeeds, and it happens to Americans for example, and those civil liberties and privileges disappear - gone forever - then surely the world will be a much darker place as a result? This isn't about America, or about any other nation, but about that culture, blame the victim, paper the cracks, and preserve the status quo. Why?
