For some its a past record of who they are/were.
Some have earned it over many years.
For some its a worthless title they bestow on themselves to inflate their ego.I never refer myself as a "Master" the only one who can do that in my opinion is my slave.

I do not use it in my name.  The letters actually stand for mister which I made up over 30 years ago on a differrent site.  As for being a Master or Sir or Dominant or whatever, I leave that up to when someone else wants to call me that.  I know I am not a Master to all subs and slaves or Dominant so I leave it up to others if they want to go that route or not.  I have plenty calling me sir out of plain respect that I do not need to demand it.

Generally speaking I believe that the title of Master specifically is a very specific title most often accorded a top by their bottom. After all the bottom/sub/slave must be willing to actually call them such. Granted there are those who do not know any better and will call any top anything they wish to be called.

But I do most certainly believe that there are tops who through their activity in the greater community, the respect they've earned over time, and through their interactions with many others, come to EARN the title of Master. Two shining examples we've already mentioned are Master Fire Maam and Master Archer. Now I would even go so far as to say that in my eyes Elegant has earned the title Master in at least my mind. She is a Master Bootblack, Leatherworker, and oxmoronically, a Master-Slave. Would Elegant ever in a million years refer to herself as such, I seriously doubt it. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if she asked not to be called such, that that is not the proper honorific for her, and that she would prefer to be called something else. Would that lessen in my mind the fact that I believe she deserves to be called Master? Absolutely not, but out of respect for her and for her Master, Archer, I would honor her wishes.(and by default their wishes)

In San Francisco, we have many tops who have received their leather master's cover from the community. In some cases they allow to call them as such, in others only those who directly serve them may refer to them as such. It's all personal choice people.

It comes down to the only thing that matters is what the title means to you and the person who choses to call you by that title.

When people are introduced to me and ask what honorific I prefer, male or female pronouns, Mommy, Mama Pup, Daddy, Master, Sir, Mistress, Ma'am, boi, bootblack, slave, or any of the above, I simply answer my name is ~Blast~ and over time there may be a reason to designate an honorific for either or both of us, but for now my name will do. I don't have any preference in pronouns, use whatever you are most comfortable with. Now clearly there are some who prefer to use something else as they feel it is easier for them to remain in a particular headspace "in scene" and in that case we negotiate an honorific.

Interesting story...

I got mine in a mixed box at a yardsale, there were some old comics, a gift of submission, and whatnot, and not needing the others, I took the title.

For those who bear it in their online monickers,  at what point did you feel you had enough experience, or what deciding factor, made you think you were ready to wear the title 'on your sleeve', so to speak?

I was in need of an anonymous monicker and wanted it to be unique.  A girl had recently called me an 'interesting dominant', so I simply bolted on the beginning of one word to the beginning of the other and have used that online many years hence.

Sometimes I regret having the 'dom' in my monicker.  People sometimes confuse me with a HNG and it can also be a liittle misleading because I'm much more of a master (or a Daddy) than a top and rarely call myself a Dom.

The irony of being a dominant who has effectively been named by a slave doesn't escape me!

I do not mean this in any disrespect, but in the year or so that I have been on this website, trolling, shadowing, and using the chatrooms(atleast until the anti-virus software on my new computer put an end to my ability to load the java applet) I have noticed many people have the title of Master or Dom in their nicks.  Many times it suits, sometimes it does not.

For those who bear it in their online monickers,  at what point did you feel you had enough experience, or what deciding factor, made you think you were ready to wear the title 'on your sleeve', so to speak?

Again, this is not meant as a disrespectful post or condemnation, it is an inquiry because I am of a curious nature, especially when it comes to social interactions and traditions.

I got my dom certificate from the Federal Department of Doms and I'm currently working on my masters at emory.

After we decided we were leather pirates ...

We've tended toward "Captain" and "matey" ...

Having also agreed that the etymology of "Dom" and "Domme" is "do me".

"Master" we decided was either a trade term or an academic honorific, and since Matey has her Masters and I don't ... all the more reason to be "Captain".

Further, "Captain" in a pirate crew was an elected position, which reenforces the consensuality.

Well, I'll wade in here, even if late...

I took the title of Master myself. It was a very important part of my self discovery to claim the title...because, in the end, the person's approval I needed most was my own.

I use it as a spiritual title, mostly, like Brother Bob or Sister Martha. I'm simply Master Fire to me.

I don't require anyone to call me Master except those I own. I have no qualms about people just calling me Fire. Others call me Ma'am, MFM, MF, FireMa'am or nothing at all. Do as you're comfortable.

In the end, it's the "street cred" of a person that makes or breaks a title. Ask around about those you want to know more about and see what their peers have to say.

Master Fire

Most people chose their moniker for this or other sites as a way to quickly tell others a little about themselves.  We could have a similar thread about people who use the terms sub, slave, puppy, furry, or whatever.  We could say that anyone who uses such identifiers in their screen name or scene name are all over compensating or whatever in order to be dismissive of others.

i am a submissive.  my Master declared me as slave.  i chose my screen name as to say something about myself and my approach to life and to this lifestyle.

my Master chose his moniker on this site to say a little about Himself and the type of relationship He was seeking.  He is not active in the 'community' and i'm not sure that only those who are declared a Master by Lifestyle peer groups should be the measure of a person.  i don't believe that everyone who has Master, Dominant, Lord, etc. in their screen names are wankers.  i know that InkedMaster does not expect anyone to refer to Him as Master except me.  In fact i know that He would be uncomfortable with anyone other than His slave(s) using that title.  i also know that anyone who knows Him in real life, including His Brothers, would say the moniker suits Him.

Or, the masters and mistresses (whether "grand or not") who claim to be involved in the community for (insert a decade or two here) who no one has ever heard of.

But, I digress...

I think part of the problem is that in this lifestyle the word Master is afforded a great deal of prestige, even more than Dom/me.

Actually, while anyone can call himself Master, to me it holds no prestige at all. It's just a word.

The first time I read this thread, I was waiting for someone (and I thought it would be you, Archer) to give this answer.  I received my Cover last April, so I have to agree with this.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Archer

I don't have it in my profile/ nick etc, but I am often afforded the honorific of Master Archer by folks in the community.
Actually had my Master's Cover (Cap) presented to me by a group of my peers a couple years ago.
I think it took me about 6 years to go from being very uncomfortable with folks using the honorific to being able to humbly accept its use.

On another note, I've had this debate in my own household.  No, I don't think throwing the title of Master in front of your name makes you one.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen;

In being 'invested' and 'cover presented and installed' by my peers in the mid 1980's; I am to my peers a "Master."  It is a title given with the intent of honor, achievements and recognition by those to whom deemed me worthy of the position.

For me, the more important focus is on those that use the title of "Master" or any other; as to mislead, deceive and harm another with intent that is evil.

No matter the title; it is the intention of using the title; especially if self imposed--that is my concern.

Although the title of "Master" has been abused and tarnished across the years; just as the association to Old Guard by heterosexual men as to bedazzle women; there are those who have earned the title and or practice the traditions that the "Old Guard" may have started and polished as to adapt to its ever growing population and/or, to adapt to their regional tastes.  Each generation becomes 'a Guard' per se.  As we age, we become the old.  It really is a matter of an individual's 'spirit of intent.'

Master or Lady, I am just me.  Those who know me, know who and what I am.  It is not my job to inform the world of what and who I am.  My work and or accomplishments, speaks for itself.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

My grandfather always said "the humble man walks a rightious path".

I have always carried the term "Master" in my name since the day I joined this lifestyle. At first it was a inspiration, something to strive for. Now, years later, and many miles and challenges down my path, I see it in no greater light or meaning. I never expect to be called a Master, except by my slave. Thought I have been called Master Dragon from those ranging from fellow Masters to free subs and unowed slaves. My skills with leather, steel, and fire do not make me a Master. My studies and skills in any physical or mental abilities over another do not make me a Master. Ones ability to face their demons, overcome their challenges, strive truely to make ones self better, not perhaps for themselves, but for another, this may be were one can find the meaning. Honor and respect, and perhaps in spite of whatever one may be or can do, they remain the humble one.

Master Dragon

Dear BlkMgkCarpet,

Although I can understand the premise of thought; to which Master is associated with ownership of beast or human; I do disagree with the thought; that when my slave dies; I am no longer a Master among my peers; to whom deemed me a "Master;" not for how many slaves were in my stable or strung on leashes but, much more than mere ownership over someone.

My skills and or knowledge, standing in the community at large; do not see the lack of a slave as the 'right' to remove my title as "Master."  It would be equally disturbing; to which people would be forced to abandon the title of father or mother when a child dies, or marries, goes missing and or overseas serving the military, etc.  So, in that vein -- having had slaves in active military--long deployment does not remove the title of Master in my opinion; as the relationship may not be visible to all -- yet exists; as well as that special bond.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Speaking only for myself and not any 'one true way'.

Were it not for owning a slave I would not use the term or consider myself a 'Master'. Unless/until there are universal standards applied to the title the reference is limited to context. In the company of others, I refuse to allow anyone other than beth to refer to me by that title. If required, or felt appropriate within the venue; 'sir' is about as formal as I let it go. However without the insistence of another Master/Mistress over their charge - I introduce myself by, and I'm fine with, my first name. Were I part of a group that issued ID cards, certificates, or used the title as an honorarium, in their environment I may consider it; but I doubt it. Unlike say, the Masons which set specific criteria for the title 'Master'; I don't care, nor have a need, for such a reference.

What significance is the title without the implied ownership? You can call a steer a bull because it still displays horns; but the label giving the perception of having balls doesn't represent the reality implied by the name.

I've always been a dominant, but without a slave, I'd never consider myself a Master. I hold the same opinion over the use of the label slave. Were something to happen to beth, my title of Master would die with her; regardless of any 'reputation' or alleged 'knowledge' and 'skill'.
