pinksugarsub -> HRT -- A/anyone Know About It? (6/20/2008 12:37:58 PM)

My physical is set for July 1st.  i have several questions for the MD, and will make a list to take with me.

One of my questions is about hormone replacement therapy.

i'm hoping to hear from P/pl who have taken it (with what results?) and P/pl who looked into it and decided against it (why?), as well as A/anyone else W/who cares to post.

There is one thread on HRT, but the discussion wasn't quite what i need, so i did not bump it.

Here's the link to that thread, if Y/you wish to read it:

http://www.collarchat.com/m_1806057/mpage_1/key_Hormone%252CReplacement/tm.htm#1806057

Thanks ahead of time to A/all W/who choose to respond.

Opt out of premarin...it has been shown to increase heart attacks in some people.
However as my doctor says..its made of horse piss, do you want to ingest horse piss?

Hehe...there are several on the market.  I don't think what is better than what.  There is always the natural
way..soy..black cohosh..etc.

I use enjuvia. It is plant based. I've also cut way back on caffeine which can trigger hot flashes and night sweats for me.

i take premarin 2.5 mg...been on it 6 years...no side effects what so ever.

i dont care where it comes from...as long as it works...your not actually going to taste the pee now are you??? so who gives a shit what its made of.

every type of hormone will have the same possible side effects.  side effects are usually caused with combination of other medications and health related issues.  they are triggered by something.  if you are not healthy, if you are big and obese, if you eat poorly, if you dont exercise, if you drink or do drugs, and other things will cause the side effects to react.

a good endocrinologist will screen you first...some will deny you...and some will accept you as a candidate for HRT.

it is a must to be monitored regularly 2-4 times a year by an endocrinologist.
you should not smoke or drink AT ALL...NOT A..ZIP..ZERO.  when taking HRT.  i can not stress this enough.

i personally have a congenital heart disease and it took 8 dr's before i was recommended by a friend to the endo i had (until he retired).  who was extremely knowledgable in HRT as it was his specialty.

dosage is a major issue.  too much of it and your dead.  i take about half of the recommended dose.  body size, age, and health issues will be factors in finding the appropriate dosage.  i started 1.25 mg prem, down to .675 and now the last 5 of my 6 years i am 2.5mg.  normal is around 5-6mg.  but is rare that people take such high dosages as they are lethal.

herbal does FUCK ALL and is a COMPLETE waste of money.  estradial (progesterone) is ok but higher dosage and has even more side effects.

I disagree with that.  Black Cohosh really did help me with hot flashes and night sweats, and is very inexpensive.

I never took HRT becasue I am at "high risk" for breast cancer and it is associated with with increased risk of breast cancer.

My gyno discussed the topic with me in regards to heart attacks based on latest info
it can actually lower the risk but timing of when taking it does play a factor in a great deal

If you wait five years say after menopause starts it is pointless then to take ..may increase the risk of heart attack  ..it is shown to be most sucessfull if take shortly after menopause starts naturally or surgically
the reason permarin is chosen upon is because it allows for a more even delivery of estrogen through the day than other forms

taking estrogen only is considered safer than taking estrogen + progestrin... I beleive age is a factor as well in deciding which   the best person to discuss with is you gyno  ask about risks /benefits ...it is not alway necessary to take   most women today do not take anything unless their symptoms are severe that it is affecting daily life

Ya all are forgetting about cardiovascular disease.

Black Cohash ~~ which is homeopathic (I believe you asked about that Pink women) ~~ will further damage an already damaged heart.

i'm not having hot flashes -- despite this insidious rumor sub4hire keeps trying to start, LMAO -- and as far as i know i'm not having any other menopasual symptoms.  i wanted it to protect my skeleton.

Thanks for the info, faerytattotedgirl.

There  are other ways to protect your bones from osteoporsis

KatyLied -> RE: HRT -- A/anyone Know About It? (6/22/2008 12:00:42 PM)

Maya - I understand that calcium citrate is recommended as well as natural sunlight, along with weight bearing exercise.  Do you have any other specific suggestions?  I am osteopenia and find milk to be gross.  Unless chocolate flavoring is added.  The only thing I use milk in (on a daily basis) is coffee.

Although it's good to see what others have experienced with the different types, you might react in an entirely different way. I'd recommend you visit some more MtF-focused groups and forums if you haven't already as well for more info. Remember, though, that the thing isn't to find what works best, but what works best for you.

Good luck! [;)]

Calcium is not a vitamin. Calcium is an element, an alkaline earth metal, to be precise.

Greens, such as spinach, collards, etc., are good sources of calcium. That's how cows obtain it.

if you smoke... quit that is one of the biggest factors to bone loss that is the biggest preventative  ,   and eat more meat most important should be red meats    http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/69/1/147

DesFIP -> RE: HRT -- A/anyone Know About It? (7/16/2008 7:53:03 PM)

Please note that if you take calcium in pill form. do not take more than 500mg at one time as more than that will not absorb. Take them twice a day, without food for half an hour afterwards.

MissSCD -> RE: HRT -- A/anyone Know About It? (7/17/2008 7:00:14 AM)

Are you in menopause?  The reason I asked is simple, if you are not there, you don't need them.
I am in surgical menopause.  I take estrogen.   It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't for hot flashes.
Hot flashes are a monster.
You have to try several things until you find the right thing for you.
Ask your doctor.   See how it goes.

Good luck.

Regads, MissSCD
