As much as it sucks, what you eat and drink really will have a tremendous effect on hot flashes. Also rest, or lack thereof, made a difference for me.

Ya all are forgetting about cardiovascular disease.

Black Cohash ~~ which is homeopathic (I believe you asked about that Pink women) ~~ will further damage an already damaged heart.

RealSub:

I think you are confusing Black Cohosh with Blue Cohosh. Black Cohosh can lower blood pressure and should be used with caution by persons who have hypotension and hyponatremia. But there is no data indicating it causes heart damage.

On the other hand Blue Cohosh should not be used by people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, glaucoma or a history of CVA < stroke>.

Black Cohosh is used for menopausal symptoms, while Blue Cohosh is used to stimulate labor. It is given in the last weeks of pregnancy to tone the uterus and promote uterine contratures/quicken the birthing process. It has also been used in early pregnancy in an effort to abort the pregnancy with marginal success.  Blue Cohosh is also useful in the treatment of arthritis. Some practioners use both Black and Blue Cohosh to induce labor, but it's the Blue that is predominantly used.

There is also a White Cohosh, I believe it's use is strongly discouraged due to it's gastric severe complications.

Something that deserves mention here: there are docs that are specificallly suggesting use of bioidentical hormones rather than stuff like Premarin.  Premarin has some differences with human estrogen. Also, most docs that use Premarin don't balance the full range of hormones to get back to a more youthful level. Dr. Cranton in Washington has also written on this topic.  There is a lot written about HRT-and a wide range of medical opinion.

I'm bumping this thread. I'm starting HRT in a few days - Angeliq 1/2.
I've been on Yasmin birth control for period regulation and to control heavy bleeding. It works fine for that BUT apparently the estrogen level in it is not enough to control the horrible hot flushes and sweats I've been getting for the past few months.

Sir has told me that when I get them I go very pale. One time He thought I was going to pass out At 51 I seem to be right in the middle of the age range for menopause

I've been very lucky that I've had no problems at all with any hormonal birth control, so I'm hoping this new pill will help me cope with yet another life change

Rayne, I'm not a candidate for HRT but I was given SSRI's for depression during the worst point of perimenopause and was delighted to find it lifted the depression and also eliminated hot flashes and night sweats.

Good luck.

I discovered when my mother became ill that there's a connection between HRT and non-small cell lung cancer.  I don't think her doctor discussed that with her when she was put on the HRT.

FR-

Many women opt for hormone replacement to lessen the hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Personally, I'm passing on that. Eventually the symptoms will end (although sometimes it feels like it won't, lol). Years ago women went through it and there wasn't a pharmaceutical "fix." It's a natural part of the aging process. The night sweats were the most bothersome to me, waking up with the majority of my upper body drenched. My dermatologist gave me a script for a prescription anti-perspirant, and that really has helped a lot.

I will say that it seems most women will go for the HRT regardless of the risks. I think that DesFIP's route with an anti-depressant might be worth trying first. If it helps with the symptoms but allows your body to naturally adjust to the changes it is going through, it just seems like a much safer and more logical route.

i have been taking estratest for the past 12 years, after surgical menopause. And for the most part, i do well with it. On occasion i wake up and the sheet under me is wet ( and no, it isn't watersports ), but the crankiness i don't have.

The one thing i have that i wish could be better is feeling hot all the time, but that could be due to excess adipose tissue I was taking estrogen, but my head kept sweating, so my doc put me on estrogen with testosterone to combat that. Now my libedo is doing quite well!

Anyway, it hasn't killed me yet, so I shall keep taking it until told to stop.

I've been taking the new pill for a few days now and I'm feeling lots better. It seems the low estrogen has been making me tired as well as giving me flushes and sweats. I'm sleeping better, I'm not getting the sweats and I just feel better mentally as well as physically.

i take premarin 2.5 mg...been on it 6 years...no side effects what so ever.

i dont care where it comes from...as long as it works...your not actually going to taste the pee now are you??? so who gives a shit what its made of.

every type of hormone will have the same possible side effects.  side effects are usually caused with combination of other medications and health related issues.  they are triggered by something.  if you are not healthy, if you are big and obese, if you eat poorly, if you dont exercise, if you drink or do drugs, and other things will cause the side effects to react.

a good endocrinologist will screen you first...some will deny you...and some will accept you as a candidate for HRT.

it is a must to be monitored regularly 2-4 times a year by an endocrinologist.
you should not smoke or drink AT ALL...NOT A..ZIP..ZERO.  when taking HRT.  i can not stress this enough.

i personally have a congenital heart disease and it took 8 dr's before i was recommended by a friend to the endo i had (until he retired).  who was extremely knowledgable in HRT as it was his specialty.

dosage is a major issue.  too much of it and your dead.  i take about half of the recommended dose.  body size, age, and health issues will be factors in finding the appropriate dosage.  i started 1.25 mg prem, down to .675 and now the last 5 of my 6 years i am 2.5mg.  normal is around 5-6mg.  but is rare that people take such high dosages as they are lethal.

herbal does FUCK ALL and is a COMPLETE waste of money.  estradial (progesterone) is ok but higher dosage and has even more side effects.

Then you should watch this..
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/253945/horse_slaughter_of_the_premarin_foals/

Premarin is pure estrogen and hopeless in its given form.

I went through early menopause at 31 and I did a lot of research into how the female hormone structure works, especially as my mum had breast cancer at a young age.
What I learnt didn't seem to fit with what my doctor was telling me about HRT. Unopposed estrogen can cause breast cancer. Progesterone makes a hasty exit at menopause and it is a vital hormone because it stimulates bone building but why were so women who were taking HRT still getting osteoporosis? Because the balance of progesterone is actually very difficult to reproduce in menopausal women, mainly because its synthetic and our bodies reject it. Without progesterone our estrogen has nothing to team up with.
HRT is known to cause estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance has all sorts of nasty side effects, the main one being breast cancer.

I did some research, in fact I did an awful lot of research and I discovered that we can get out hands on natural progesterone

This has made a huge difference to my life. I went from a moody, night sweating woman that had little interest in sex and who felt hugely unattractive to someone who was chilled, had a very high libido and felt good about myself. I have been taking this stuff for years now and my doctor who was so impressed, did his own research and now recommends it to menopausal women instead of HRT.
