VBPiercedGal -> TMJD And Gags (6/22/2008 3:27:59 PM)

Does anyone have any experience with TMJD (temporomandibular joint disfunction) and gags?

I've always had very bad TMJD and with the help of my chiropractor, it's well under control. A few months back, I was beautifully tied and gagged (with rope. 1/2" thick). Within 10 minutes, I was in excruciating pain and had to signal my advocate to have me released. While I initially enjoyed the experience, I'm hesitant to repeat the fistfuls of pains meds and extra visits to my chiro after every session. It didn't help that with this particular session, the Master didn't take me medical condition as seriously as I'd have liked. Any tips on softer materials, small ball gags, etc...?

All input is greatly appreciated!

Well im not sure as you didnt state what kind of rope he used but cotten or a soft synthetic rope tend to have abit more give than hemp.  As for diffrent gags...You can look up how to make a "monkey fist knot" wich can be used as a gag and you can change the size by using diffrent thickness of rope, or try a bit gag? perhaps use a toung gag that holds your toung out of your mouth as opposed to holding your mouth in a constantly open position.   Hope this helps[:D]

I have tmjd and have found that most gags cause too much pain for me to use. My favorite gag was our cheapest, made out of a short length of mid-diameter dowel, tied on both sides with a leather strap. I guess you can call it a bit gag.

The rope used was a very soft nylon. Unfortunately, my hair was tied back to may hands making it nearly impossible to bite down at all! I could adjust my jaw a bit laterally, but having it pried open without being able to move it up and down was a bit much.

I did get some great advice privately about harnessing my mouth shut instead of using a bit, rope, or ball gag.

I very much appreciate everyone's replies!

THANK YOU!

Jesus. Never ever ever use a gag if you have TMJD issues.
I am 42 and my jaw is irreparably damaged. Just got home from an oral surgeon.
My jaw opens 16mm.

Don't mess with this, please.

I've used Duct tape covering my mouth but will never put a bit nor gag IN my mouth.
Let those that play or top you know this is a medical hard limit unless you want a lifetime of pain and a misaligned jaw.

Thank you, camille! That was the only time I had ever been gagged and believe me, I'm not eager to repeat the experience. I'm looking more into harnesses.

I'm so sorry about your TMJ troubles. Knocking furiously on all nearby wooden surfaces that you never have that kind of pain again!

Okies, have you been actually diagnosed with it?
Have you done research and are you aware of TMJ basics?
I've been dealing with TMJ since before it had a name (the old days, when they sent TMJ people to shrinks for help. honest) and I have extensive information as well as first hand knowledge if you have any questions.

You can really make a difference if you begin to change things early. You can have a healthy jaw or one that is fubared.

Yes, I was diagnosed 10 years ago. It was mild to moderate until about 2 years ago when my grandfather died. I didn't realize how stressed I was until my jaw locked while I was trying to drink from a straw. That was Capital B Bad! So, no more straws, gum, crunchy, chewy, or big bites. Sadly, had to cut way back on BJs [:(] Lots of stretching excersizes and regular visits with my chiropractor for deep tissue work. So far, I've been lucky enough to avoid needing a night guard or surgery and I'm finally to a point where I can go several weeks without having to take pains meds for my jaw. The gag incident was one small lack of judgement on my part that will forever live on in the history of Stupid Things I've Done To My Body.

I don't have TMJD (so if I was informed incorrectly just move along)...

But I heard that TMJD tends to act up when holding the mouth open, more so then when biting on something small. If this were the case you could try a psychological gag. Perhaps holding a cherry from your mouth, with quite the spanking if it falls.

This would eliminate the need for a large device, but still satisfy some purposes of a gag.

camille65 -> RE: TMJD And Gags (6/28/2008 4:20:26 AM)

Holding the jaw open puts a painful strain on my jaw but biting down or clenching does the same thing. I have to keep my jaw in a resting position at all times unless I'm eating.
The resting position is with my lips closed, my jaw relaxed and none of my teeth touching. Jaw slightly open in a position that doesn't strain it in either direction.

I don't know if I am a typical TMJD example or not. I've been told that my jaw is a disaster and have erosion problems so it is likely I have more problems than most. I don't click or pop when my jaw opens because it simply doesn't open wide enough for that to happen.

It can be degenerative and cause a lot of problems throughout the upper body so I suggest those that have TMJD be very careful and take appropriate measures not to worsen things. Therapy and care can be expensive, TMJD is rarely covered by insurance and often considered to be a pre-existing condition.
