Can't beat wood, what type of tools do you have?  Any power tools, Bandsaw, Tablesaw, Benchsander, router, sander??

Do you have any experience working with wood? tools and stuff?

jezzabelle19 -> RE: help on making a paddle (6/24/2008 11:52:21 AM)

Hmmm. Ok, is this something that you just really want to learn how to do because it could be far more costly to make one than to buy one. Is it being "handmade" by you part of what will make the gift special?

making it myself is part of what is going to make the gift special i really want to try and i know that if i cant do it its ok but i want to at least give the good college try so to speak.

Considering that you don't readily have tools and haven't worked with them, you might want to try going with leather. You will want some heavy leather (like boot leather) and cut out the pattern in the shape you like. Flip it over and trace it onto another piece so that both sides will show the nice side of the leather. You may want to use a bit of glue between the two pieces and put them under something heavy for a day or two so that the pieces will stay together while you work with them. Then you can stitch it, lace it or put it together with rivetted studs. Rivets are pretty easy to use, you take a small mallet and an awl and poke holes (a bit smaller than the rivet itself) where you want your rivets and place the rivets in. Put the studded cap on the rivet and pop them together with the mallet. Then you can sand the edges if you want them smoother.

if you want to skip a step and just 'make it yours' greek supply shops near campuses generally carry AWESOME wood paddles...all sorts of shapes and sizes that you can just modify

thanks for the advice and ill think about the leather it would probably be a lot easier.

Just FYI - there was a paddle thread recently on the Bondage Gear channel: Shopping for Paddles. Perhaps it will be of interest to you.

I think a paddle with a word on it is a good idea, then it is not just a paddle but a brand :)

I agree. I love the idea of the mirror image of the word so it leaves the imprint Correctly on the Subs body.

to the OP:  Personally I would take a simple wood paddle. get some sand paper and the wood finish/sealant (i'm not sure what type it is but I've used it before it pretty much works just like paint, but its kinda like a chemical maple syrup)

sand off the old finish till you get to the wood. decorate it do whatever you like to it...add some buttons or paper clippings or whatever crafty yet not Tacky thing you can think of... then re-finish it... follow the directions of the finish... lots and lots of layers  are usually better...

I'm sure there is plenty of reference for what Finish would suit the needs best.

good luck and have fun.
