I am excited for you. Good journalism can make any topic interesting.

You see- language, attention span is morphing into fragmented semi-communication. so the real thing is getting harder to come by.

keep us posted- we love to help=particpate, etc.

Do you think I should post some of the articles I write onto the CM boards? This week I'm doing one on how nude modeling for art classes helps create positive body-images. Names of professors and such would be edited out for posting on here, of course. What do you think?

assuming you still have rights to the work (it doesn't get copywritten by the paper) it shouldnt' be a problem

candystripper -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/26/2008 9:40:47 PM)

Okay, so both the intended audience and the authors are college students, have I got that right?

Let me tell you what I would love to see, speaking now as a <can't say it>.

* Date rape, especially date rape involving drugs like GHB. A brief caution, some red flags, and info on any rape crisis center available to the campus.

* The older stds, including crabs, but most especially herpes, which is incurable and much more life-altering than is generally understood.

* The range of methods of birth control, with some critical thinking as to ease of use, cost, risks, and effectiveness.  Be nice to remind people that a condomn together with spermacide is a reasonable cheap and effective method of preventing pregnancy.

* The various means -- and here I mean the basics -- of achieving orgasm for both men and women, along with some recomendations for reliable 'sex manuals' like 'The Joy of Sex'.  There are some people who need info to more fully enjoy sex -- or learn to pleasure their partners.

I'd write it as if it was a 'sex ed 101' lecture; assume some readers are skilled and knowledgable, while others are not.  Emphasize that sexual joy is everyone's right -- we all have a yearning for it.  I'd treat homosexual joy with as much dignity and respect as heterosexual joy.

I think I'd tread lightly if venturing into the more 'unusual' sexual practices.  D/s is only one; there's also swinging and open marriages or relationships and whole world of stuff.  I'd avoid topics like porn and exhibitionism or voyuerism.

I'd recommend giving the reasder referrals, or references, or cites to the 'net, or any other tool an interested person could use to find out more if they wanted to.

Sounds like a fun and very compassionate enterprise, and I wish you good luck.

I've posted it to my livejournal without problem and it's my byline, so I'm assuming it's still mine? The only ones that I've done that don't have my byline are the editorials, which represent the entire staff.

All of these are really great, thank you! I definitely intend to use reputable sources with citations, or else "concerned" community members would have a shit fit over us posting "lewd" material. Seriously, they're the only people who complain, the actual students barely send in two letters a semester. And that's usually complaining that our articles aren't relevant to their lives. Hopefully this can change that!

persephonee -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/27/2008 6:29:28 AM)

This is actually a timely concern in my line of work.
There are so many different types of people staffing LTC facilities that its impossible or at least a daunting task to protect a resident's/client's right to have psycho/sexual needs met. i would have to review the Bill of Rights for LTC to see if indeed sexual needs are listed, but depending on the interpretation, it can be followed through psycho/social needs.
Dementia or related cognitive deficiencies cause everyone trouble though, in regards to the importance of protecting the individual from themselves or others as they are not able to do so for themselves.
This concern can be shifted out away from actual sexual contact to the right of the patient/client/resident to have their prior relationship respected. Even if not legally recognised, a prior relationship, beit same sex or significant other, needs to be respected by the staff as to privacy afforded during visits etc...(notwithstanding the legalities of powers of attorney). In respecting prior relationships it shouldnt be a stretch to include new relationships but it is.
Families have issue with two unrelated patients becoming close physically and emotionally as most of the time there is a spouse out there somewhere either living or dead that the family has deemed to be the primary relationship. This brings out all sorts of feelings of betrayal etc...causing all sorts of drama.
So a sexual POA is not a bad concept but prolly hard for most to swallow. Its still widely held that sexual needs are not important and that they should not be discussed, let alone spelled out in someone's chart at the nursing home.

Sorry OP...kinda got excited to see something relevant to my line of work in the thread and focused on that.
The topics listed thus far are great and i cant think of one to add. i would def agree that Savage Love is a great thing to emulate...hes hysterical and brilliant.
Cant wait to read some articles.
Have fun.

The law of Intellectual Property was already so convulted, there's actually a 'Patent Bar'. Attorneys cannot get practice before the U.S. Patent Office unless they have been admitted.  They cannot get admitted without both a law degree and an undergrad degree in engineering or a similar major.

In the olden days, the poor man's way to 'copyright' something was to send a copy in a sealed, self-addressed and stamped envelop to the Library of Congress, along with a copy for their archives.  Once you receied your sealed envelope in the mail you'd leave it sealed and this way, you'd always be able to prove the work was your own.

In the present, with the 'net, I wouldn't make any assumptions.  At least add "Copyright 2008' to the end of your articles on Livejournal.com.

It's always been my understanding that as to magazines and newspapers, the publisher holds all the copyrights; the reporter who wrote the article is paid a salary (or not) but the rights cede to the publication.  I think the best you can hope for is that your paper may grant you the unfettered right to reproduce an article appearing with your by-line.

I'd get this permission in writing, as it might just come in handy when it's time to enter the job market.

Good plan. Since we're not paid for articles, I think it's a fair trade off to ask about it.

fungasm -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/27/2008 7:42:22 AM)

Something I would love to see after you wrote it:

Do an informal survey on your campus.  Ask 100 women:

a. If they know what a clitoris is.
b. Do they have regular clitoral orgasms.

Then compare your findings to that of earlier time periods....

_________
In 1969, a woman didn't have a right to have a credit card or car in her own name (that came in the early 70s), she was not entitled participate in school sports (or sports at all), she could be fired from a job for being female, only 40 percent of women in one study knew what the word clitoris was, and only 56% could knew what it was without the word, and less than 40% had experienced an orgasm.

abcbsex -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/27/2008 1:36:38 PM)

this is a great one! I'll ask both women and men though, this might be an interesting project for the psych department. Thanks for the suggestion!

Since you're capitalizing on ignorance.  Ask the people where a woman pee's from.  Her vagina or what?

That always seemed to be a topic of ignorance in discussion groups.

Or, does size really matter and why do you feel that way?

kiwisub12 -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/27/2008 3:51:53 PM)

Thing i can think of off the top of my head -  sexually related diseases - ie cervical cancer, herpes, condyloma. - pretty risky stuff.

for example - having sex before age 18 or puberty increases the incidence of cervical cancer. A nice fact not many people know. Thats why we have people in their 20's and 30's with abnormal pap smears.

Seems to me you could do an article on "alternate" sexual expression. That way you could address kink, without being judgemental or encouraging (so to speak)

and i realise this isn't about sex, but maybe somewhere someone could do an article about saving for retirement - and how much easier it is in your 20's  and 30's, and how much less a payday you have to save if you start early. No-one ever told me - so i think this info should be diseminated as much as possible. [:)]

fluffyswitch -> RE: Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column (6/27/2008 4:45:41 PM)

i used to be a big advocate on virgin culture-- people who willingly choose to remain virgin. there's actually a lot of pressure against it and it's something that you never really hear about. i used to wish that there was more out there about it-- i mean my*space has groups on the subject but it's never talked about and it's a form of sexual expression in its own right.
