Hi colouredin,

I started doing research on diet and nutrition because of nasty PMS symptoms.  Health food stores stock women's vitamins and herbal combinations specifically for PMS and menopause.

Hope you get some relief soon,

OK so I hate doctors mostly because whenever I have tried to talk about stuff of a mind nature before they have ignored me. So here goes, I was wondering if anyone knew of a link between the time of the month and physical illness, I seem to get flu like symptoms every period along with rather serious depression I have been taking vit b6 which seems to have helped during the month that im not on but as soon as i came on i got a sore throat aching muscles difficulty breathing and general shitness, it happens every time, and although I would love to ignore it the fact that it gets in the way of work I cant ignore, I cant take a week off every month!!

yep. i'm in a rarity (and this will most likely start a firestorm i seem to be good at that sometimes) in that my gyno actually told me that i have PMS, the actual syndrome as opposed to what people talk about when they get their periods (not that i have anything against people use the term, it doesn't bother me at all). she told me to eat less sugar for the depression. something about processed sugars, including white flour (it's a carb) further screws up the brain chemistry that's already screwed up by the hormones. it works when i take the time to do it, but there are months that i literally don't have the time to read the back of everything i try to eat (the joys of being a grad student, finals week i barely have time to sleep let alone read food boxes).

be careful with them though. they can interfere with your hormonal levels. i was taking dong quai (i think that's how it's spelled, i don't remember anymore) and it was making my period progressively lighter. i liked it, my doctor freaked. don't just start taking stuff without looking into contraindications.

Gwynvyd -> RE: Period stuff (6/30/2008 4:38:18 PM)

Greetings,

After having gone through a string of bad Dr's for years.. I started researching mine online before going. If you have insurance.. most insurance companies have a program online that tells you about the Dr's.. what they specialize in.. and basic info. Some have ratings and customer comments even.

When I go.. I let them know that I am "trying them out" I bring a note pad with questions.. and I "observe thier bedside manner. Do they actualy look me in the eye, do the talk *to* me.. not at me, the floor, the wall.. or thier note pad. Are they engaging? It is *My* money I am spending. I do not feel bad about interveiwing Dr's.

I also have a general rule that any Dr. that has even a remote possibility of seeing any of my bits naked is Female.

They own the equiptment.. they know how it works personaly.. not just in theroy.. and they have gone through cramps.. and most likely child birth as well. They are not going to think I am being a "silly female" when I mention things about my female issues. They *Know* damn it.

They also tend to take more time, be more understanding.. and fucking listen. *honestly listen*

Now my Dentist and my Neuro. Doc. are males. They are damn good. The Neuro is one of the top 3 in the country. I wouldnt trade him for the world.. and he sings the Mighty Mouse Theme song all the time. Love him to death. Barring my brain actualy oozing out of my ears.. not just figuratively.. he wont be seeing me nekkid. so we cool.

As some one said.. herbal remedies can be dangerous.. esp when it comes to menstral issues. Black and Blue Cohosh, and dong quai are very strong herbs. You can toast your liver quickly. Always talk to a profesional first.
A good multi vitamin on a daily basis, reduced caffine intake, reduced presevitives, and artifical dyes and the like.. and increased potasium, and calcium are always a good bet. ( Eat your leafy greens and orage/yellow fruits and veggies ) Warm baths, heating pads, and tiger balm for achey muscles helps as well.

I hope this helps!

Gwyn

I'm suffering from PMS today, and it made me think of this thread and do some more research.  Sometimes, although I've been dealing with it for years, it just gets bad again and I need to remind myself of how I should be taking care of myself to help with the symptoms.  It's taken from http://carefirst.staywellsolutionsonline.com/Library/Encyclopedia/2,128, which is a website by an insurance company (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) which supports wellness.  Interesting reading - basic, nothing earthshattering, yet it's a reminder for something many of us deal with monthly.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a condition with a variety of emotional and physical symptoms. It's estimated that PMS affects 70 to 80 percent of women in their childbearing years; 30 to 40 percent of women have symptoms severe enough to interfere with daily activities, and 5 to 10 percent have symptoms so severe they're considered disabling. PMS usually disappears when menopause begins.
Symptoms
There are many physical symptoms of PMS; however, many of the symptoms have other possible causes. If you have any of the signs listed below, you may have PMS, but many women experience these symptoms and do not have PMS. It's the number of symptoms you have, as well as how severe they are, that helps your doctor determine if PMS is the cause.

  • Bloating

  • Breast tenderness

  • Water retention

  • Weight gain

  • Swollen feet and ankles

  • Headaches

  • Food cravings

  • Acne

  • Low energy

  • Backache

  • Joint pain

  • Insomnia

  • Carbohydrate cravings/appetite changes

Hormonal fluctuations during the premenstrual phase may be associated with psychological and emotional symptoms that strongly resemble the symptoms of depression. If the symptoms occur only during the premenstrual phase, they may be signs of PMS. However, many women who suffer from depression mislabel their feelings as PMS. Talk to your doctor if you experience the following symptoms to determine their cause and find the most effective treatment:

  • Mood swings

  • Irritability

  • Depression

  • Aggressiveness or hostility

  • Crying spells

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Confusion

  • Anxiety

  • Decreased interest in daily activities

  • Social withdrawal

Treatment
There aren't any physical tests that can confirm you have PMS. However, you should have a thorough exam to rule out other medical problems that have symptoms similar to PMS.
To accurately diagnose PMS, your doctor may ask you to keep a diary of your symptoms for about 3 months to see if they follow a pattern that points to PMS. Record your cravings and aches and pains, and keep track of your food, sleep, and exercise. This log will help your doctor with diagnosis and can also help you and your doctor determine the best treatment.
Self-Care Steps for PMS
There is no cure for PMS, but you can reduce or prevent many symptoms through lifestyle changes. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may also prescribe some type of medication.

  • Try aspirin or ibuprofen if you have headaches, backaches, cramps, or breast tenderness.

  • Nutritional supplements, including vitamin B6, calcium, and magnesium, may relieve some of your symptoms.

  • If you suffer from moderate to severe anxiety, irritability, or depression, your doctor may prescribe an antidepressant or recommend you see a therapist. Antidepressants have been found to be very effective in treating the psychological and emotional symptoms of PMS.

  • Oral contraceptives may decrease your symptoms by preventing hormonal fluctuations.

Preventive Care for PMS
Research shows that dietary changes and increased exercise have positive effects on the symptoms of PMS. Try these steps to prevent or alleviate your symptoms:

  • Limit salt and drink plenty of fluids to relieve water retention and bloating.

  • Insure an adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D—usually through dairy products or supplements.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol to minimize irritability.

  • Try eating smaller, more frequent meals to avoid cravings and reduce bloating.

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes per day to improve your overall health and reduce fatigue.

  • Make sure you're getting enough sleep to reduce stress.

  • Look for ways to manage your stress, such as taking a bath or meditating.

My doctor told me to take Vitamin B6 a week or so before my period but i take it all month now and it has worked pretty goodd (100mg)..but not completely..as far as the other physical stuff...i have seen this commercial on TV for a birthcontrol pill called "Yaz" i think it is...supposed to help with PMS...i have mentioned it to my doctor but he keeps me on my birth control i have now. I found this link to Yaz:  www.yaz.com

fluffyswitch -> RE: Period stuff (6/30/2008 7:36:43 PM)

yaz is good if you can take hbc. that's my problem, i can't take hbc because it's contraindicated with my blood pressure. sigh. so i just suffer for a week and everyone suffers a long with me.

playfulotter -> RE: Period stuff (6/30/2008 7:45:59 PM)

Thanks Fluffy Switch...i do have a touch of High blood pressure too and maybe that is why he won't let me use it...geez..doctors!  He should tell me that at least.[sm=dancing.gif]<-----these smilies are cute but i am not sure what they are doing...

fluffyswitch -> RE: Period stuff (6/30/2008 7:49:05 PM)

yeah high blood pressure + hbc can = stroke and other nastiness. so no bc for me right now unfortunately. other than practically owning stock in the trojan company anyway...

KatyLied -> RE: Period stuff (6/30/2008 8:04:27 PM)

Birth control pills can increase blood pressure, so if you already have an issue with high blood pressure your doc may be using some caution.

I take Yasmin, and while it hasn't cleared all symptoms, they are noticeably decreased, especially my emotional fluctuations.  I've been on the birth control pill for 20 years now, if not more (damn, I'm getting old!) and it's the best formulation I've ever used.

You know, when I have trouble with my doc, I come to a message board of anonymous people to ask sensitive health questions.

meh...  I see no harm in asking a question.  Acting on anonymous advice without checking things out first - that would be dangerous.  But you never know what you might learn, especially about natural remedies.

Do check with your doctor before taking certain supplements, especially if you have other medical conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.

DesFIP -> RE: Period stuff (7/3/2008 1:45:41 PM)

What I have read is that a woman's immune system weakens when she ovulates to give the sperm a better chance at fertilization. Since if our immune system were fully functional, it would recognize sperm as foreign bodies and go fight them off. Unfortunately the side effect is that once the system is weak, other germs can also attack. So yeah, you ovulate, another virus invades and a couple of days later you come down with a cold, allergy attack, etc.

See a gyn whom you trust and get tested for premenstrual disorders; they can be treated.
