Anyone here who's done nude modeling, or photographed nude models-I'd like some tips from you.

I was at my weekly figure-drawing class today and an older gentleman I've spoken to occasionally asked during our conversation if I'd be interested in modeling for his photography, which he would pay me for. I asked if it would be clothed or unclothed and he said he wasn't sure, depends on his inspiration. I told him I'd be interested (I'd LOVE to have a nude model for my own photography but alas, I have no money to pay one).

A lot of things are going through my mind about it because I've never done anything like it before, his photography is placed in galleries (which my art professors would see) and I only kind-of know him. Also, photography feels different to me than nude drawings for some reason... more exposure, and accurate replication, I guess. I know that I'll feel more comfortable if Alpha is with me, that's a given for safety and all that. What are some other things that can make it go more smoothly? How much money should I ask for in return for my time and possible nakedness? Do you usually ask for more when it's nude work?

I have never nude modeled. However  I watched a show that followed a woman getting photos done for her husband - sexy clothes all the way to nude.
The photographer encouraged her to do the nudes first - because clothes lines ( and she was skinny so it wasn't because of too tight clothing) would take a while to fade.

So I imagine you might want to be nude for the photo early - maybe walk in a robe or something.

I have worked with nude models a lot as an artist and have done some photography.

I have a fairly unusual take on this and others will almost certainly disagree.

Firstly you have said nothing about how YOU feel about this. Unless you already feel good about the idea or want to challenge yourself, then you certainly shouldn't do it. There are much easier ways of earning money. There must be a kind of buzz, otherwise you are both wasting your time.

As a model I would want to know what the photographer want to achieve. Why has he chosen you in particular ? If you have fears about your professors seeing the resulting work, then you should raise this with him and your professors. Much better to get this into the open. You should try to get to know this man a bit before you ever enter his studio and if you don't hit it off don't work for him. If he sells photographs of you will you receive a cut in the profits? Do you have a say in where the work will be exhibited? Do you get to vet all the images he makes of you?

I think that there is always a kind of sexual charge if someone makes an image of another person, even if that person is clothed and the artist isn't sexually attracted to the gender of the model. I mean sexual charge in a very general sense. I think that many artists and models try to avoid seeing that. I once knew a young female model who was also an artist, she would walk around the studio during breaks, naked and looking at the images of herself with an artist's eye. This broke all the conventions that normally exist and it made most of the class were very uncomfortable, but to me it was a breath of fresh air and later on we had a brief but exciting affair.

But I digress, I think that there is almost no danger of unwanted advances, provided lots of people know where you are. He has his reputation as an artist to think about and pestering a model for sexual favours is about the worst recommendation and is likely to ruin his career. If he wants to be at all secretive about your work together or dismisses any of your legitimate security concerns, then under no circumstances work for him.

Most of this post is caution, but I have looked at your profile and I think that you are probably well up to the challenge and will almost certainly enjoy the experience very much.

If you are ever in Berlin, do contact me, I would enjoy working with you.
