I would guess an allergic reaction, if you spend time outdoors and get bitten a lot, try taking a Benedryl 25mg. when it's bad. It can make you drozy but is very good at nipping allergic reactions quickly, they administer it in the ER all the time.

Its how your body copes with them and tho' it not nice for the time you have them be glad it does it quickly! lol. I have a friend who swells and itches for days.

In ants it is the formic acid in their saliva. Same as stinging nettle.

I don't remember the irritant in mosquitoes saliva that they use to lube when the drill you, try pulling hard on your shirt and bust their little noses off. Obviously not a long term toxicant

FelinePersuasion, sorry to have Hijacked your Thread.
If I pass you the Rubber Chicken would you not dip it in Ants before you beat me with it?

It's not a toxin.

The histamine reaction people experience from mosquito bites is due to the body's immune system reacting to proteins in the mosquito's saliva. The proteins act as an anticoagulant and are injected continuously as the mosquito feeds. The swelling after a 'bite' is evidence of the immune system's reaction to those proteins. When proteins in the saliva reach mastocytes in our connective tissue, histamine and heparin are released which dilate blood vessels and cause localized edema to speed the immune system's response to the injury. This increased blood flow and edema cause the classic flare and wheal associated with insect bites. The histamine also antagonizes nerve endings which causes the wonderful itching sensation that we're all familiar with.

As someone else suggested, you should NOT take Benadryl after a mosquito bite unless the reaction is severe as it will impede the healing reaction. A topical solution can be used to treat the itching but it should otherwise be left alone to allow the body to deal with it. If you're having severe reactions, you should be under the care of an allergist and following their instructions anyway.

grins at the rubber chicken comment.

Yes steph. baking soda and water cools the itch imediatly in my case, and you can rub the banana peel from a peeled nanner on it. But rub the inside of it not the outside.

sub4hire -> RE: ok so what I want to know is (11/8/2005 1:01:33 PM)

I swell up as well but not so sure the size of a quarter. Though I don't scratch...mind over matter and all of that. I pride myself on the control in my mind.

Although, have to wonder...say you are allergic. The mosquito bites your genitals. Since it is a different type of skin...I imagine it would swell. Would it go down just as fast? Would it make your genitals more sensitive for a time frame?

Don't blame me, you're the one who got my mind working.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: ok so what I want to know is (11/8/2005 1:11:11 PM)

Grins at sub4 I don't think it'd go away so fast because of how moist and stuff the genitals are, and lets say someone was bit there, what were they doing. Laying spread eagle just waiting for the bite* hehe*

You're online, I'm online. You've heard the same stories I've heard...geez people even claim they write it into contracts...hehe. Of course common sense rules most of those people out in the reality scale.
Yet, it doesn't mean it can't happen. I've been bitten by an ant in between my butt cheeks before sitting in my front yard talking to the neighborhood kids.

Some masochists...or sadists..or whatever you want to call them could have a whole bug scene. Tie you up..bring in the bugs.

You never know what an idle mind may think of.
