Not a bad idea when you can't wait for or make the drive to a traditional class. It's not all that expensive either.

It's important for every dom/domme to know basic first aide before cracking out the whips, chains, knives, and lighters.

you would be amazed at how much info they cram into those classes

But I do have one major reservation with an on-line CPR class.

Missing out on the hands on practice on the CPR manikins would be a big loss, IMO.

CPR isn't super tricky, but there are certain details that are learned best by actually doing it.

Things like hand placement, cadence, smoothness of compression, and stroke depth have a massive effect on the effectiveness of CPR.

Its hard to impossible to learn these things by looking at pictures.

Another thing to consider is the AED portion of current CPR certifications.

Automatic External Defibrillators are a heart attack victims best chance of survival. They are  reasonably simple to deploy (they are designed to allow laypersons to deploy) but in the stress of a medical emergency, even the simplest tasks can become difficult.

The hands on practice, and the confidence that comes having performed a task under relaxed conditions, may very well make the difference between life or death.

As the old seatbelt PSA's used to say:

You can learn a lot from a dummy.

Status: offline 		Nothing beats actually doing it. I can read about brain surgery, doesn't make me a certified brain surgeon. CPR is difficult and tiring - unless you've done it you can't really appreciate how hard it is.
Physical skills such as bandaging and splinting, too, are learned by doing.
Just my two cents.

Status: offline 		I dunno, brain surgery is a hell of a lot different than cpr, I don't think it really applies here. Do you ever have to go and demonstrate your ability to do it though? How do they know you just didn't let the videos run in the background while you were off doing something else? O.o

And while I agree that watching is different than actually using a dummy, I guess you could also say that using a dummy is a hell of a lot different than doing it on a real person with bones cracking and blood everywhere. O.o  I'd encourage people to take it.

Status: offline 		I believe a basic first aid class is about 8 hours long and maybe costs a person 10 dollars.

No reason to use the internet.  There is a lot of bad info floating around here.
If you don't know any better you cannot discern the good from the bad.

The Red Cross in DFW wants me to drive to down town Big D and pay between $60 to $85. Not to mention, you have to wait for the date and have the day off work as well. This is a quick fix for something you need right away.

As for just wanting to know first aide, screw paying $20. Five to Ten dollars should get you a basic first aid book at a used book store.

However you wish to learn, it's good for any dom or domme to know basic first aid.

Status: offline 		I've attended Red Cross First Aid/CPR Training classes before.  To get both trainings, I believe it's a 6 hour course, which really isn't bad.  The cost?  I'm not 100% sure, but I can give you a couple of ideas:

1) your EMPLOYER might send you to one of these trainings, if you ask.  Every office/job loves to have certified CPR/ First Aid at their location.  It's definitely worth looking in to.  (Additionally, if your job will not pay for this, or if you don't currently have a job, it's a fantastic qualification to have on a resume.)

2) community colleges sometimes host classes - Red Cross will pretty much schedule a course around your needs. 

3) people in your community might be interested in doing a class with you, making the above option possible.

An absolutely awesome thing that my kink committee is doing this month is a CPR/First Aid training course for the kink community, complete with certification.  Since their space is limited, they're offering it to the DM's in the area first, before opening it up to the public.  The cost was GOING to be $15/person but they elected to offer it free of charge, as a community service.

Status: offline 		I still would not recommend cpr without hands on training not just some video footage and wouldn't play with someone who paid for the cheaper option just because they can't be bothered to get in a car and do the drive or spend the money.
 
Maybe it is just different in the UK, I am well aware of that.  But your attitude would not make me feel comfortable.  If a dominant wishes to learn cpr or basic first aid then go for it, but why go into it half hearted.
 
If you work, find out about getting placed as the first aider and you get the course for 'free' then should your employer accept you - by a recognised organisation.  And like dodedo suggested, get pro active.  There are ways around the cost.
But not to attend because of the drive or cost and instead opt for the cheaper option, that may cross all the boxes from a legal pov, but is nothing more than a $20 per two years online con is a sell out and places people at risk.  It's no different to 'becoming a vicar' certificate you can sign up for online.  The place name drops - making it sound like it is affiliated to recognised assocations.  It's not a 'one offpayment' - It lasts only two years membership so after two years you would have to reapply.  It's a business.  If you fall for such, then honestly I would question your skills.

Status: offline 		Respectfully .dark, I disagree with you. At least here in America those who attempt CPR are covered legally by the Good Samaritan act. Its prevents people from suing you if they get injured in the course of a CPR attempt . The fact is most people who go into cardiac arrest dont survive with CPR administered. I was told by the CPR trainer that only about 10% survive. Whether i was "comfortable" with a persons inexperience or not, whoever is around whether you were trained or not, PLEASE, TRY!!!!!

I am certified for CPR and as a CPR intructor.

I absolutely agree that to try is important - trained or not.  I just don't agree with watching a online training programme, waving your certificate about like it means something and giving the money every two years to a business.  In other words, I would rather be with a person who happily admits they don't really know CPR or first aid, than a person who thinks they do and who uses some cert they gain in such a way, as a 'plus'.

It is no different here.  Just depends on the person the same as it does there.  Some people don't care and those ones well they won't get any training.  Those who do care, will.
It doesn't take a lot of time nor effort so there really is no excuse at all for not getting any sort of training.

Status: offline 		This isn't about me learning cpr and first aid. I've been an EMT for over eight years now and was first certified in CPR/First Aid when I was eight as a cub scout. I also became a CPR/AED instructor back in 2004. Not to mention, I've been ACLS certified since 2000.

For me, the on line course is nothing but a update on current American Heart Association guidlines. It's an quick way to get a certificate for when a job interview is just a week away but a "On hands course" is more than two months away.

If you don't need a certificate, then just buy a book or read current guidlines on the Amearican Heart Association web site. As for renewing a certification, all first aid and cpr certificates are only good for two years. If I were to take classes in a hospital, college, Red Cross facility, or at the AHA headquarters, I'd have to be back in two years to give someone money for the renewal course. The entire certification process is a business.

In any case, this post was originated to get more people interested in learning first aid. I don't care how you learn it; it's just a reminder that first aid is important to know for anyone in the BDSM lifestyle.

Status: offline 		I completely agree with those saying to go to a physical class - I've got extensive experience in this and it's best as a hands on approach.  In saying that, part of the training I've recently done was online, but that was followed up by class room time to attain the certification required.
