It can be made with indigo as a darkening substance, but there is also 'black' henna available which contains ppd, a substance definately not recommended for use on skin. Ppd is used largely on hair, but even then, contact with the scalp is not recommended. Black henna used on skin might not cause a reaction on first use, it might take a few goes, but it contains a risk of blistering and burning the skin leading to scarification. Even those who have used it on hair, some have come unstuck and it has burned the scalp leading to bald patches. Henna if you want the effect to be darker can be mixed with indigo, and I believe in India, it is darkened with coffee or tea. But any colouring is in the end, is wholely dependant on skin type and body chemistry. Personally, from what I know now, natural henna is generally green, I would be highly suspicious of any black or grey henna, especially those which can be bought in powder form, to be mixed with water.
